Fully Automated Workflow
Our PDF workflow recognizes your files automatically from their filename and runs an acceptance test on them for meeting minimum
required quality. Once successfully preflighted they will pass on to the rest of the stages of the workflow. If not it will show you an on-
screen report which will also be emailed to you automatically. Our RIPS and other workflow components are configured to reproduce and
in most cases drastically improve the quality supplied in the artwork.

Printing is a process full of surprises. To turn the surprises to our favor and prediction, we suggest that the following guidelines be followed
while preparing a job for a Printhouse. Though we accept many file formats, the most preferred one is PDF.

Common Guidelines for both Procedures
1. Recommended minimum Resolution
• Color images – 300 dpi (200 dpi for Newspaper jobs)
• Greyscale images – 300 dpi (200 dpi for Newspaper jobs)
• Monochrome – 1200 dpi
2. RGB images – convert them to ISO39 profile.
3. CMYK images – convert them to ISO39 profile before taking them into layout.
4. Spot colors – convert them to process. Keep only those spot colors intact that you want to print separately.
5. Text on artworks made in Illustrator need to be converted to outlines before exporting for layout
6. Overprint – choose overprint / knockout settings in the design application as MASAR’s overprint policy is to only reproduce what
is given. Recommended overprint setting is to enable for small black text and disable for solid black fills.
6. Maintain 3 to 5mm of bleed if the job requires.
7. For perfect binding with double spread images, move the artwork to the foreedge by 5 mm
8. You have to send single page PDFs for Newspapers. Multiple page PDFs are fine for commercial jobs
Note: For any technical clarifications, please feel free to call our prepress department at any time.

You will not need to set a bleed if you are printing a Tabloid or broad sheet newspaper or similar material in our weboffset. However if
you are doing a magazine or flyer or brochures you may need a bleed. It is important if your artwork spreads till edge on the final printed
material. An equal bleed of 3mm to 5mm on all sides is sufficient. You don’t need ableed in example No. 1 below. But you need a bleed in
example 2.

Acrobat Distiller – Making a PDF from the PS file
How to manage your spot colors?
Many designers are fascinated by the spot colors and tend to use them in their designs.
But when you are sending a four color job make sure that you convert the spot colors
to process before you export the artwork. The best possible conversion is achieved only
using the color library in the native application on which it was used. Leave only those
spot colors untouched that would need special inks or UV.

Color ManagementBasically Display devices can show more colors than a proofer can print which is more than what a Commercial Press can print which is
again more compared to Newspaper printing. Also different input devices like digital cameras and scanners have different color capabili-
ties. Hence there is a need for color management to have a predictable result on print.
Proper color reproduction is possible only when the artwork comes tagged with right profile and rendering intent as it would be impossible
for a press to guess them. A printer like MASAR would know what he can print (their color space) and would have complete control over
the same, but to achieve right color reproduction, the incoming pictures should carry the profile information in addition to being clean, of
good resolution and properly color corrected so that converting them to the Press Color Space and matching them for the intended quality
would become possible.
Though a detailed color management part would be beyond the scope of this document, we will touch on important settings recom-
mended for obtainig the most optimum results. Color Management goes by the stringent rule of natue that Garbage in produces Garbage
Out. Hence, in spite of the best color management tools and techniques in place, still an image may not print well if the image is not clean,
not properly color corrected, is in poor resolution or if the right profile is not specified.
Those colors that cannot be represented in the destination need to be altered to colors that can be represented which is called “Gamut
Maping”. Also we need to have different types of gamut mapping for different type of image objects. The most recommended gamut
mapping is described below.
Colorimetric
Company logo or any other object where it is important to preserve the colors colorimetrically, then one will want to colori-
metrically match source colors to matching colors in the destination. Colorimetric Gamut mapping is recommended for this.
Perceptual
Pictures (bitmap images) are rendered better by perceptual method of gamut mapping. Usually these mappings make
changes even to the colors that can be matched, as the human visual system is more sensitive to relative color differences
than it is to absolute differences. So changing the mapping to preserve those differences yields better looking results.
Saturated
Business graphic or other schematic material, it may be more important to have the best solid saturated colors that a
device can produce than to have an accurate color that the device produces in a poorly rendered way. Saturated gamut
mapping is recommended for this.
The following sections describe the recommended settings and procedures regarding color profiles.

color managed documents.

Adobe Photoshop - Recommended Settings
The following screenshots show the recommended color settings in Adobe Photoshop. You can reach this screen by chosing Edit Menu
and Color Settings command in Adobe Photoshop.
Newspaper - We recommend you to use ISO Coated Profile for all your images. With our Color Management in GMG we will achieve an
improved quality over ISO standards of ISO Web Coated icc profile for Glazed Newsprint (heatset offset) and ISO 26 for Standard Newsprint
(coldset offset).
Commercial - We recommend using ISO Coated for commercial jobs to achieve ISO39. The printing machines in MASAR can in fact
achieve a higher color space than ISO 39, due to high technology and the high quality of the inks and other materials emloyed. With the
help of proven color management from GMG, MASAR can achieve
closest matching of
colors between sheetfed and commercial web.

How to Apply Profiles? There are just three steps involved in applying a profile and verifying how it would look on print.
STEP I – Copy the profiles to your computer
You need to copy the icc profiles to make them available for photoshop images.
Mac OS:
System HD:Library:Application Support:Adobe:Color:Profiles:Recommended - available for all users
System HD:Users:<your_user_name>:Library:Application Support:Adobe:Color:Profiles:Recommended
In case you don’t find the “Profiles” or “Recommended” folders, you may have to create them
Windows:
System Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Color\Profiles\Recommended
Adobe Indesign
Recommended SettingsWhy should we manage color in Indesign?
All the right color profiles we set in Photoshop may simply be over-
ridden and spoiled with wrong settings if we don’t manage them
properly in Indesign or any layout program. Hence it is strongly rec-
ommended to use the provided screenshot for managing your color
settings in Adobe Indesign.
This will help ensure that your images are reproduced on print with a
predictable and guaranteed quality.
You can reach this screen by choosing Edit Menu and Color Settings
command in Indesign.
File Preparation Guide
www.masarprint.com
24
STEP II – Apply the right profiles to your images
In Photoshop, select “Convert to Profile” from Edit Menu.
Apply ISO Coated v2 ECI for all your color images in Photoshop.
Apply Dotgain 15% to convert any color image to greyscale
Apply ISOnewspaper26v4_gr to convert any color image to
greyscale for Newspaper
Use the screenshot beside for help.
STEP III – Verify the results
In Photoshop, go to View Menu, Proof Submenu, Custom Command
for the screenshot beside and use one of the following profiles as
per the requirement.
(ISO 39) ISO Coated v2 ECI – for Sheetfed
(ISO 28) ISOwebcoated – for Glossy Newsprint
(ISO 26) ISOnewspaper26v4 – for Standard Newsprint
Now you can “Proof Colors” by just pressing <CMD-Y> (<Ctrl-Y> in
Windows) and preview the image to see how it will look on Print.
Pressing <CMD-Y> again brings you back to working space (ISO 39).
Remember, you are using this only for previewing to know how it
looks on print, but still you are working in a higher color space of ISO
39 (with ISO Coated v2 ECI profile).
Why do we ask you to use ISO 39’s profile of high quality commercial
printing whereas in reality you may print in even Newspaper? The
resons are,
• You will find it convenient to use only one color
space for all your images
• You will see better colors on screen giving you a
leverage in image correction
• Our Color Management does a superior conversion
between different color spaces, provided you use ISO
39’s profile (ISO Coated v2 ECI)
Best PracticeTo maintain the neutrality of the images and to preserve them in the highest color space possible,
it is a good practise to keep the images in
RGB mode, and convert to CMYK just before
sending for layout application. And you can use proof colors command to see how it would look on print.
Tip: You can program any of the function keys to carryout “Convert to Profile” Command using Actions Panel in Photoshop.

Steps for On Screen Color Proofing
This section explains you the steps involved in preparing your system for on screen color proofing so that you can set color targets for
your pages, view them and approve them.
Install Matchprint Virtual software on your Mac
Set System Preferences
Calibrate your monitor
Review, annotate and approve color managed pages in Smart Review
First make sure that the ambient light in the room is constant throughout the day and the viewingconditions are not changing through day
light entering through the windows. As the desktop wall paper can influence the viewing perspective make sure to put a plain 50 grey as
desktop wall paper.
Step - I Installing Matchprint Virtual Software
Mathprint virtual is the software you need for running a patch of colors on your display, measure them using
the supplied colorimeter, compare it with the predetermined settings and prepare the display calibration profile.
To install the software open the Matchprint Virtual CD supplied and double click on the MVP dmg file. Follow the
on screen instructions to complete installation and restart. If prompted, download any updates and complete
the installation for the same and restart.
Step - II Setting your System Preferences
1. Energy Saver - In your Energy Saver Prepefernces, make sure that the sliders for “Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for”
and “Put the Display to sleep when the cmputer is inactive for” to “Never”.
2. Screen Saver - In the Desktop and Screen Saver Preferences, under Screen Preferences Tab, make sure that the setting is
atleast 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Step - III Connect your Colorimeter device & calibrate your monitor
Connect your calibration device to any of the free USB Ports in your system. From the dock open
Matchprint Virtual and select
MVP Calibrate System. Then follow the on screen instructions. Before putting the calibration device
on your monitor, you will be asked to put the device on an opaque surface like a table. The display
turns black and a template appears on the screen. Make sure you put the device on the template as
mentioned in the illustration beside. The device should not leave a gap with the display. the monitor
needs to be calibrated every 24 hours to make it suitable for color accurate proofing.
Step - IV review your pages and approve
Now you are ready to use your monitor to view pages and approve them. The prepress operators will set the color target for the pages
which could be ISO 39 or MASAR’s own color space. You will be opening the pages in smart review to check the color that is guaranteed
on our press.
Renewal of Licence for Calibration
The calibration software gets its license for sixty days when a page is opened for verification in smart review. If it says your license is
expired, you are requested to open any page from any of your jobs, to get the license renewed for another sixty days.
Note: The calibration process is to be done on daily basis, to ensure accurate color reproduction on screen.

Please call us and confirm for atleast two things
1. When you send us the last page.

Why do we need a checklist
Printing is a process in which your files go through many software and processes at your client’s end, or your end or our end. Even a
properly designed job, following all the best practices, may still cause an unwanted surprise in printing due to variation in different versions
of software through which the job passes through.
This checklist has been prepared based on past experience, and we are sure you would agree that we would not want to rediscover them.
Hence we strongly recomend you to follow this checklist to be used by you before you send us your jobs.
A lapse in checking any of the above mentioned points with your pages may cause a product with an
undesirable, unexpected and bad quality. Though MASAR’s staff will extend fullest cooperation and help in
checking your files, it will be the customer’s responsibilityto carryout these verifications thoroughly before
sending the job to MASAR.Note
