THE ARTIST

Salvador dalÍ

07

Spanish-born Salvador Dalí was an artist known for his

surrealist style and produced

over 1,500 paintings.

Not only was dalí known for his amazing paintings, but the flamboyant fuzz above his upper lip and beneath his nose is just as famous. It is said that his moustache was grown in tribute to the Spainard diego velazquez, who painted the court of Philip Iv. Paying great attention to detail, much like all of his masterpieces, dalí’s moustache contained brushstrokes of genius, highlighted by long curly points at each end. Combining the spaghetti elements of Gogol Bordello front man Eugene Hutz with the pencil-thin vaseline texture of Chuck Berry, the Salvador ’stache can take van Gogh’s missing ear any day in the battle of artistic accessories. dalí’s facial hair couldn’t have looked any better even if he painted it on himself, and that’s why we’d go so far as to say it’s the most important push broom in the last century.

Mahatma Gandhi was a political and

ideological leader of India

during the Indian

independence movement.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi started out as a lawyer. But eventually he became a political and spiritual leader in India, long admired for protesting without the use of force. Gandhi took down an empire with his nonviolent practices and helped his country gain its independence from the British. dubbed the “Father of the Nation,” the activist was also known for showing a little more skin than other world leaders, and for abstaining from sex after he and his wife had kids. another constant for the leader, of course, was his moustache, which couldn’t have been more evident against his bald head if it were written in Sanskrit. In addition, it’s said that Gandhi took a vow of silence one day a week for reflection. after inspiring a nation, Gandhi was assassinated in 1948. But like so many great leaders, his beliefs and memory live on in all of us.

revolutionary.

che GUEVARA

26

Che was a revolutionary, physician, author, intellectual, guerrilla leader, diplomat and military theorist.

as a young medical student, Guevara traveled throughout latin america and was

radically transformed by the endemic poverty and alienation he witnessed. His

experiences and observations during these trips led him to conclude that the region's

ingrained economic inequalities were an intrinsic result of capitalism, monopolism, neocolonialism, and imperialism, with the

only remedy being world revolution. later, while living in Mexico City, he met raúl

and Fidel Castro, joined their 26th of July Movement with the intention of

overthrowing U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Guevara soon rose to prominence among the insurgents, was

promoted to second-in-command, and played a pivotal role in the victorious two year guerrilla campaign that deposed the

Batista regime.

HULK HOGAN

33

Hulk Hogan is an American professional wrestler and

six-time World Heavyweight

Champion.

Hulk Hogan acquired an interest for wrestling in high school. He went on to study at Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida. In spite of his education, his interests remained in the ring and he never received his degree. Instead, he chose to devote his time to working out in a local gym owned by wrestlers Jack and Jerry Brisco. In 1979, Hogan's talent caught the attention of vincent McMahon Sr., the legendary promoter and owner of the World Wrestling Federation. McMahon gave Hogan an opportunity to join the WWF—and to create a new identity. Because of his massive physique-—he stood 6 feet 8 inches, and weighed 303 pounds—and his uncanny resemblance to the comic book hero, the Incredible Hulk, McMahon suggested that Terry assume the stage name "Hulk Hogan."

the mascot for the company

Nintendo.

39

Mario is a fictional character in his eponymous video game series, created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Serving as Nintendo's mascot and the main protagonist of the series, Mario has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation. Though originally only appearing in platform games, Mario currently appears in varied video game genres such as racing, puzzle, role-playing, fighting, and sports. Mario is depicted as a short, pudgy, Italian-american plumber who lives in the Mushroom Kingdom. He was given a moustache which avoided the need to draw a mouth and facial expressions on the small onscreen character. as Nintendo's mascot, Mario is arguably the most famous character in video game history, and his image is commonly associated with video games.

FREDDIE MERCURY

44

Freddie Mercury led the British group Queen to the top of the charts for over a three-decade span.

The rock god, who was born on the island of Zanzibar before moving with his family to

the U.K., served up infectious charisma, powerhouse vocals, and an energy that knew

no bounds. Whether it was flamboyantly parading around on stage, placing a

microphone under his belt, or strutting around in skintight pants, the buoyant singer had audiences on their feet. one

performance in particular, 1985’s live aid at london’s Wembley Stadium, was the

defining moment in an already stellar career. Not only did the band upstage dozens of other artists that night, but it also put the

spotlight on a big piece of royalty—moustache royalty that is. Up until that gig, Mercury more or less led the group

with a mullet and eyeliner. It wasn’t until live aid, however, that he really established himself as a man with some serious ’stache.

joseph stalin

In December 1929, Joseph Stalin became the dictator of Russia after the death of Vladimir Lenin.

Stalin’s moustached face was pock-marked from small-pox during childhood. a carriage

accident in his youth left his left arm shortened and stiffened at the elbow, while

his right hand was thinner than his left and frequently hidden. In his later years he

became a professional revolutionary working for the russian Social democratic

Party. His simple style proved effective in teaching illiterate workers Marxist-leninist

ideas. In 1902 he was arrested for the first time and later exiled, beginning a cycle of

arrest, exile, escape, revolutionary activity, a moustache, and arrest again which would continue to the revolution in 1917. Stalin

also proved adept at raising funds through robbery, as well as smuggling guns and explosives through the russian border.

Stalin was also masterful at maintaining his iconic moustache. He hid his deceptive plots,

plans, and ploys in it.
