Named after early twentieth-century author Sax Rohmer’s devious character Dr. Fu Manchu, this moustache has become the style of choice for a cen-tury of cinematic archvillains and those seeking to cultivate a distinctively Eastern appeal. While Rohmer faced harsh criticism for his book’s nega-tive portrayal of Chinese immigrants, Fu Manchu’s namesake whiskers have become a calling card for students of Eastern philosophy, martial arts fanatics, and moustache aficionados shooting for a more eccentric image.

While it takes considerable time to grow, this impressive ’stache is deceptively easy to pull off. Start by cleanly shaving the cheeks, neck, and chin. Be careful not to clip off any hair from the tips of the moustache. The remaining hair on the upper lip should extend only about ½ inch down toward the sides of the mouth. Use a moustache comb to part the moustache, brushing hair from the center outward. Use a pair of moustache scis-sors to trim any wild or unwanted hair from the body of the moustache. If using wax, work a small amount into the moustache and wait approximately ten to fifteen minutes. Use your fingers to pull the hair at the ends of the moustache downward as far as possible.
