I continue to be impressed by the generous sharing of
ideas, resources, expertise, and good will on the part of all
participants both in their partnerships and at the wind-
ups. We’re blessed as a profession to have so many gifted and dedicated new teachers in the field supported by so
many knowledgeable and caring experienced ones.
Kudos to all of you!
MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
SPRING ‘13 GROUP
We will be establishing a Spring ‘13 group of mentorships starting in early April once the details of the new contract are confirmed and I would be happy to field any queries about it. If you are a new teacher interested in participating, you can also simply ask your director or coordinator to nominate you for the program’s individualized mentorship.
Margo
Since the Fall ‘12 newslet-
ter report, we have had three windups celebrating
the end of twenty-three
mentorships. Fifteen were
in the Winnipeg and rural
groups identified in the last newsletter and the
last eight in the Winter ‘13
groups are listed to the
right.
You may have noticed that our new website has pic-
tures from all past wind-
ups in a neat loop. If not,

want to check out is a

THOUGHT OF THE DAY
“ Whatever you can do, or dream
you can do, begin it. Boldness
has genius, power, and magic in
it. Begin it now.
attributed to Johann Wolfgang von

Bits and Bytes...
DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that the best place to see icebergs is on the
northeast shores of Newfoundland? And that is also the most
likely place for a Canadian comic to come from…
Idn’t dat somethin’ bye? The best smoked meat (viande fumée) in Canada is preservative-free, marinated in spices for ten days, then smoked on the premises daily. Take a trip to Schwartz’s in Montreal to try it for yourself. Where else would you find words like ogive, zobo, hui, euripi and ancones except in a World Championship scrabble game?

Margaret Pidlaski Scholarship Fund
The Friends of Margaret Pidlaski Committee, made up of family
and friends of Margaret, has put this fund forward as one of many activities intended to celebrate
her life and carry on her work. This award is intended to help two learners who need financial
assistance in order to remain or increase their time in EAL
programming. At the heart of this is the knowledge we have of learners who have had to quit going to EAL classes, or drag out their learning in part-time classes, because their short-term
need for a survival job has trumped their long-term aspirations to improve their language and prospects in Canada.
The Margaret Pidlaski Scholarship Fund was awarded in
September 2012 to two individuals in Winnipeg who:
1. had been Manitoba EAL students the previous year and demonstrated commitment, perseverance, and aptitude for learning
2. had defined education and career paths 3. needed financial assistance in order to remain
or increase their time in EAL programming One award was presented to a CLB Stage I learner and the
other to a CLB Stage II learner. The individuals were chosen by the Friends of Margaret committee after nominations from a number of EAL service providers had been received.
Both participants have attended full time programming this
year and have worked very hard to improve their skills and strive to meet their eventual goals. One individual hopes to become a Health Care Aide, a job comparable to what she did
in her home country, and the other hopes to return to an engineering career.
