Maggie Grace and Joel Kinna-man share a special, albeit terrify-ing, bond playing the onscreenospring of Liam Neeson.
Grace stars as Kim, the daugh-ter of Neeson’s CIA operativeBryan Mills, in the Taken fran-chise (Taken 3 opens Friday), andshe spends most of her time inmortal danger.
Kinnaman plays Neeson’sgrown son, Mike Conlon, in RunAll Night (out April 17), a filmthat requires him and his hitmandad Jimmy to flee gangsters try-ing to kill them both.
Grace is noticing a trend.“Yes, Liam’s screen progeny
are pretty endangered,” says theactress, 31. “We all seem to be inperil.”
Protecting loved ones is part ofthe territory for Neeson, 62, whohas turned into an unlikely actionstar. Kim’s kidnapping in 2009’sTaken sent Neeson’s character ona gangster killing spree to free herfrom human tracking. The filmreaped $145 million at the box of-fice, and Neeson’s action-star per-sona was sealed.
In 2012’s Taken 2, Kim had tohelp fight o more gangsters, whokidnapped her mother and Mills.Naturally, there’s even moredaughter disturbances in thethird installment.
Grace believes Neeson’s sincer-ity allows moviegoers to accepthim as a father figure, despite be-ing a CIA operative or hitman.
“He’s this action hero, but
there’s a sense of paternal protec-tion about him. He has this pres-ence, like the father everyonewishes they had,” Grace says. “He
has a sense of strength buttenderness.”
Run All Night director JaumeCollet-Serra says the family angle
becomes an instant target forscreenwriters.
“When you want to activate abadass character, most scripts tryto go there and do somethingagainst the family,” Collet-Serrasays. “Especially the kids.”
Run All Night has a dierentpremise because Kinnaman, 35,is 6-foot-2 and has starred in hisown action films, including Robo-Cop. He delivers plenty of bodyblows, and naturally, he needledNeeson about who was tougher.
“I teased him a lot,” Kinnamansays. “And I would remind himthat he might be stronger, but Irun a lot faster.”
Nonetheless, Kinnaman hasadvice for any actors who mightbe cast as Neeson’s progeny:“They should come to workarmed and look over their shoul-der a lot. Because if they got thepart it must mean someone’s al-ready after them.”
