NOVA Dual Enrollment Intent to Enroll forms are due May 1, 2018

Dear Future Dual Enrollment Students,

You have signed up to take one or more Dual Enrollment classes next year. When you enroll in a dual enrollment course

you are taking a college course and beginning your official college transcript. The grade you receive in class will be the

grade on your college transcript. Unlike an AP course, college credit is not contingent on a test score, but on the work

you do in class. If you attend and participate in class, do the assigned work and earn a C or better in the course, you will

receive college credit. If you are concerned about the transferability of the course to a four year university, please be

sure to go to the college’s web site and search for their transfer policies.

In order to be enrolled in a DE class there are three steps you need to complete:

1. Apply to NOVA at http://apply.vccs.edu. You will need your Social Security Number, Green Card Number or

type of VISA and your parent’s Green Card Number, if applicable. You will receive a NOVA student ID. It is very

important that you keep this ID accessible (i.e. on your phone) you will need it for everything you do that is

college-related. You will also be given a username. Keep this information as it will give you access to email and

NOVA services, such as the library and Blackboard which you will likely need in your dual enrolled class. It is

very important that you log into myNOVA within 24 hours of completing your application.

2. You will need to demonstrate a readiness for college level work in English and Math. This is achieved through

the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) or an approved alternative test such as SAT, ACT, PSAT or AP test scores, see

Dual Enrollment Intent to Enroll Form. Passing any Math SOL in the last five years can be used to meet the

math requirement for non-math related DE courses. You may take the placement tests at any NOVA campus.

Campus testing centers are open most evenings and on Saturdays. You must obtain a hard copy of your test

results from the testing center to be returned to your counselor. The English test has two parts, is untimed, and

takes about 2-3 hours to complete. The first part requires you to write a well-constructed 3-5 paragraph essay,

and then complete a 40 question reading comprehension exam.

The Math test has 9 units that progress from basic math to calculus. Practice tests and additional information

3. Finally, you and your parent or guardian need to complete and sign the Dual Enrollment Intent to Enroll Form

and give it to your school counseling office. Your form is due by May 1, 2018. Forms will not be accepted after

this date! You will not be enrolled in the DE class at BWHS until your form is turned in. Forms must be

completed in full. Incomplete forms will not be accepted. You will officially be registered for the course at

NOVA during the semester in which you are taking it. After you have completed the class, official college

transcripts are requested online through NOVA using your NOVA student ID number.
