Introduction

Buildings represent a large and dynamic portion of electricity and thermal energy requirements for New York (62 percent of statewide energy consumption and 50 percent of greenhouse gas emissions). The development and deployment of energy efficiency technology in buildings lags behind that of other sectors (transportation, industrial). Reasons

• Wide diversity of energy-consuming & energy-saving technologies in buildings. • Complexity of the economic and regulatory environment in which buildings are built and retrofitted • Fragmentation and diversity of the building industry • Misalignment of incentives between various stakeholders • Intimate connection between human behavior and building energy consumption

Advance the development and application of energy efficient building related technology. Assisting the development and demonstration of new products; and supporting development of objective information for improved decision-making.

Over the past decade, the Buildings R&D group has helped NYS business introduce 40 new products, create 334 jobs, increase New York product sales by $238 million and achieve energy savings of about $161 million.

The High Performance Builders Challenge program produced the 1st Certified Passive House in New York State.

Wedlick house in Claverack, NY.

A Passive House is a very well-insulated, virtually air-tight building that is primarily heated by passive solar gain and by internal gains from people, electrical equipment, etc. Energy losses are minimized.

High Efficiency Demand Response Ballast

Low-cost, 30% dimming ballast and power-line carrier signaling system for controlling commercial linear florescent lighting for electrical load management and demand response.

Installation of a Advanced Climate Technologies (Manufactured in Schenctady, NY) two-stage, high efficiency, low emissions, gasification, wood chip/pellet boilers at the W!ld Center in Tupper Lake, NY

High efficiency (86.5%), residential, oil-fired boiler by Utica Boiler. Standard sulfur heating oil generally limits efficiency to about 87%.

ECR (Utica, NY), 97% efficient gas-fired, condensing, residential boiler. Among the top AFUE rated boilers.
