BACKGROUND

• Sustainability Partnership Team project • 21 members have contributed in addition to their

other duties • First suggested as a “Solar Trees” team project

• Conceived in fall 2012 • Evolved into an outdoor meeting space with charging

capability • To promote sustainability, collaboration and

renewable energy at JSC • Future

• May add temporary displays or new technologies • Replicate if successful

PROGRESS

• Worked early concepts & developed conceptual design • Management go-ahead 7/2/13 • Refined design: NASA cupola theme

• Solar Powered Outdoor Collaboration Cupola (SPOCC) 7/22/13

• Built a prototype at the Sandbox 9/’13 – 2/’14 • Selected location 1/‘14 • Developed cost estimate 3/’14

PARTIAL PROTOTYPE

SHEET METAL VS FABRIC

• Prototype includes ½ sheet metal & ½ fabric covering frame so that we can compare

• Sheet metal advantages: looks more like space hardware, longer lasting

• Fabric advantages: lower cost if free fabric is available, potentially easier fabrication, but requires sewing
