IntroductionExplaintoyourclassthattheywillbewritingapoemforthePoetryRivalscompetition,whichcouldseethemperformingtheirpoemasaspokenwordartist.Showavideo.

Main Teaching ActivityAskyourclassiftheyhaveanyquestionsbeforemovingontothetechniquesneededforspokenwordpoetry.Remindyourclassthatspokenwordpoetryneedspersonalinvolvementandperhapssuggestacoupleofideas.Nowyouneedtoworkthroughoneoftheminiworkshopsprovidedonthereverseofthislessonplan.Makenotesontheboard. Next,watchthe2shortadditionalvideos,whichalsoshowprofessionalspokenwordpoets,MarkGristandMixy,performingtheirpoems.Askyourpupilsiftheyhaveanyquestionsorsuggestionsandmakenotesontheboardbeforemovingontoanotherminiworkshop.Nowaskyourpupilstowritetheirownpoems,whichcanbeperformedinafuturelesson.

PlenaryThisisa5-10minuteactivity.Oncepupilshavewrittentheirownpoemaskthemtoworkinpairs.Theyaretoreadtheirpoemtotheirpartner.Theirpartneristoprovidefeedback;somethingtheylikeaboutthepoemandasuggestiononhowitcouldbeimproved.

Differentiation•Forlessablepupilsdiscussandagreetheirpoem’ssubjectandalsoselectthepoetrytechniquestobeincluded.
