Preparation WorkYou’llneedtodownloadthefreevideosandhelpsheetfromourwebsitewww.poetryrivals.com.ThevideosshowMarkGristandMixy,whotogetherperformasthe‘DeadPoets’.Theexamplesoftheirworkaretohelpinspireyourpupils.Youcaneitherprepareoneenlargedcopyofthehelpsheet(freedownload)fortheclasstoreferto,orprovideacopyforeachpupil.You’llalsoneedtodecidewhichminipoetrytechniqueworkshops(onthereverseofthislessonplan)toincludeinthelesson.Wesuggesttwo,butyoucanincludeasmanyasyoulike.
IntroductionExplaintoyourclassthattheywillbewritingapoemforthePoetryRivalscompetition,whichcouldseethemperformingtheirpoemasaspokenwordartist.Showavideo.
Main Teaching ActivityAskyourclassiftheyhaveanyquestionsbeforemovingontothetechniquesneededforspokenwordpoetry.Remindyourclassthatspokenwordpoetryneedspersonalinvolvementandperhapssuggestacoupleofideas.Nowyouneedtoworkthroughoneoftheminiworkshopsprovidedonthereverseofthislessonplan.Makenotesontheboard. Next,watchthe2shortadditionalvideos,whichalsoshowprofessionalspokenwordpoets,MarkGristandMixy,performingtheirpoems.Askyourpupilsiftheyhaveanyquestionsorsuggestionsandmakenotesontheboardbeforemovingontoanotherminiworkshop.Nowaskyourpupilstowritetheirownpoems,whichcanbeperformedinafuturelesson.
PlenaryThisisa5-10minuteactivity.Oncepupilshavewrittentheirownpoemaskthemtoworkinpairs.Theyaretoreadtheirpoemtotheirpartner.Theirpartneristoprovidefeedback;somethingtheylikeaboutthepoemandasuggestiononhowitcouldbeimproved.
Differentiation•Forlessablepupilsdiscussandagreetheirpoem’ssubjectandalsoselectthepoetrytechniquestobeincluded. Ifnecessary,suggestlessablepupilsworkinpairs,orasmallgroup,tocreatetheirpoem.•Tochallengemoreablepupilswhohaveaflairforlanguage,poetrywritingandtechnicalabilitysuggestapoetic formtheyhavetouse.Alternatively,suggesttheywritetheirpoemincharacter.
