SunGard: a Fortune 500 companySunGard: a Fortune 500 company

World’s 25 largest financial services companies

Global footprint (datacenters and office space worldwide)

$25 trillion in assets accounted for and managed

 20,000 employees

 25,000 miles of dedicated networks

Business Continuity Awards (2008) - Outstanding Excellence in Business Continuity and the Data Centre Strategy of the Year Award

3

From reporting to actionFrom reporting to action

We published our first baseline report for 2008 and identified our datacenters as our main source of carbon emissions and energy use, through purchased electricity

4

Today’s agendaToday’s agenda

 Overview of a typical datacenter

Considerations to determine the right KPIs*

 Implementing the selected KPI

 What happens next?

*KPI: Key Performance Indicator

DisclaimerDisclaimer

All the data, locations and initiatives shown today are examples used to illustrate the metrics definition process, not to provide an update on our performance.

This is not meant to represent SunGard’s strategy in any way – today’s goal is to provide a realistic insight into a challenging process using examples.

We will focus on the process of defining one metric, as a basis for discussion and questions.

Looking at PUE more closely Looking at PUE more closely

Requirements Energy billsSub-meteringCalculationsProcess to collect data

PUE: Power Usage Effectiveness

Determines how much energy is used by IT equipment vs. all other uses (heating, cooling, lighting…). The closer to 1 the ratio is, the better.

Used by Green Grid, Google and most companies.

11

Complexities behind the PUE ratioComplexities behind the PUE ratio

ConsiderationsError marginData uncertaintyCalculationsAssumptions

•EUS1 Energy consumption for type 1 unit substations feeding the cooling plant, lighting, and some network equipment •EUS2 Energy consumption for type 2 unit substations feeding servers, network, storage, and CRACs •ETX Medium and high voltage transformer losses •EHV High voltage cable losses •ELV Low voltage cable losses •ECRAC CRAC energy consumption •EUPS Energy loss at UPSes which feed servers, network, and storage equipment •ENet1 Network room energy fed from type 1 unit substitution

12

What happens next?What happens next?

The PUE (Key Performance Indicator) is used to set targets and map initiatives for the year (planning process).

13

What happens next?What happens next?

The PUE ratios are monitored as well as progress on all initiatives targeting PUE reductions.

Any roadblocks are highlighted as part of the process, ahead of time

14

What happens next?What happens next?

Seek executive sponsorship to support process

Monitor industry’s thought leadership: EPA, Energy Star and Green Grid to track/implement changes

Follow companies with similar challenges: from Google to Facebook, for example in this case.

Automate process to free up time from number crunching towards more strategic activities

Build scorecards and dashboards to support strategic decision making and enable dissemination

 Report, refine, repeat…
