Artist Maya Lin has most famously designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorialthat's in Washington D.C. but also has designed a sculpture called "Wave Field"that is on our very own campus---in the Engineering School on North Campus. Ashort biographical statement on a PBS site (http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/lin/index.html) seems to argue that an artist like Lin can site "home" inmultiple places, and in a number of ways:Lin, a Chinese-American, came from a cultivated and artistic home. Her fatherwas the dean of fine arts at Ohio University; her mother is a professor ofliterature at Ohio University. “As the child of immigrants you have that sense of,Where are you? Where’s home? And trying to make a home,” remarks Lin. Shedraws inspiration for her sculpture and architecture from culturally diversesources, including Japanese gardens, Hopewell Indian earthen mounds, andworks by American earthworks artists of the 1960s and 1970s.
Keeping this in mind, do you agree that these pieces are able to offer an idea ofhome that brings together culturally diverse sources? Why or why not?
