This bull produces better mamas, not headaches
P.O. Box 014059 n Kansas City, MO 64101 816.842.3757 n www.hereford.org
There’s no mama like a Hereford-sired mama. Net income of
$51 more per cow per year and a 7% advantage in conception
rate, compared to straight Angus females.* All this from a bull
that is known for its fertility and easy-going nature. Hereford bulls
— better mamas and no headaches.
Hereford — gentle bulls making black better.

Fellow Cattlemen,
2011 makes our 11th consecutive sale. Through the years we have been fortunate enough to become involved with some of the most forward thinking folks in the cattle business, ranging from the customers we’ve partnered with to the family members and staff who manage the operation on the home front. The teamwork that has developed between the commercial, farming and purebred sectors here at home has created a unique and genuinely progressive operation. The efforts of three very faithful employees, Dylan Frappier, Sue Bakko and Steve Wolff, have been additions that would be tough to replace. Their drive for success I believe to be one of the most integral parts of Topp Herefords. Our relationship with Tom Bresnahan and the crew at SB&B in Casselton has created one of the premier feedlot alliances in the industry. Tom’s approach to profitability and his willingness to pass his knowledge onto his customers is something of a rarity in today’s world. And most importantly our partners, you, the customers. Your knowledge, vision, thoughts and concerns surrounding the beef industry dictate a large portion of how we breed cattle. Our product is truly a derivative of your needs.
I also consider us fortunate to be involved with the Hereford breed. The opportunity as a breed to be at the forefront of a significant change in the beef industry exists because of two key factors. First is an extremely dedicated staff at the American Hereford Association. Their efforts to assist and educate breeders are critical assets to our growing success. Second is the vision of breeders across the country who are strategically changing their programs to incorporate the benefits of Hereford genetics. The facts regarding Herefords in a planned crossbreeding system are backed by both scientific studies and cattlemen’s results. Simply put, a cross breeding program pays dividends.
With this in mind we understand that you have a variety of places to do your bull shopping. Our objective is to earn your business with proven results, guarantees that you can depend on, and service and programs that back up our policy that the sale is just the beginning. The following catalog pages will explain the bulls and our program. Our breeding strategy is simple: pounds, efficiency, longevity and disposition equals $.
We wake up every morning doing what we love most and we get to work with a group of people who are simply the best folks we could deal with. We are blessed to call ourselves ranchers. See you at the sale.
Regards,
Ryan Topp

Dam of 63N
The success and history of 63N progeny says it all. A bull that has earned his mark with explosive muscle shape and design, rib shape and doing ability. His daughters are extremely good uddered and easy fleshing. The 63N attributes in terms of shape and kind seems to be prevalent as his daughters are pro-ducing progeny with more mass than their contemporaries. They are in line on paper and their type is right for the times.

74X is the 63N protege. Short-marked, red-eyed and solid. 74X is extreme in his rib shape and muscle pattern while still being very fluent in his movement. For some his actual BW may be a bit high, but for a bull with as much mass as he presents, his makeup is smooth. 74X will be used at TH on a majority of the 719T daughters. Selling full interest - 2/3 possession.

Progeny Sire of Lots 17-44
MATERNAL SISTER
TO 719T
A sire that is getting it done at TH. 719T’s progeny is short gestation and low birth. Calves are vigorous at birth, and get up and grow. His numbers are real, a bull that has steadily improved on the EPD charts. 184 calves with a BW ratio-98.3, WW ratio-102.7, YW ratio-101.8. The progeny is short-marked and heavily pigmented. Tre-mendous eyeset, tight-sheathed and his daughters being just short of a month from calving look fabulous. What intrigues me the most is these calves push the scales down. They are massive-ribbed, stout kind of cattle that don’t sacrifice for calving ease. In my estimation 719T is a bull that will undoubtedly change the face of Hereford cattle as we know them today!

Full Brother to Lots 45 - 54
TH 122 71I VICTOR 719T
It has been a pleasure to watch firsthand history in the making. Watching 719T mature as a calf on his prolific dam was amazing. The growth curve and puberty level at the 5 to 7 month range was ideal in terms of growth and performance standards. I questioned if, as a calf, 719T was going to maintain an adequate weaning to year-ling spread that the feedlot industry demands. Not only did he maintain but he outdid his pen mates on test by .2 lbs per day on 120 day trial. He sold into one of the most elite herds in the US going to Gary and Sharon Romey, Hot Springs, SD. Later an interest was sold to Genex, CRI and then a possession interest to Nelson Land & Cattle, TX. TH kept a possession interest and used him naturally in his first season. Now after two seasons, we can rest assured he is true. Low birth, short gestation, excellent growth, early puberty, deep ribbed, extremely stout, large scrotal circumference, heavily pigmented and he does it consistently. The 719T progeny are the easiest feeding cattle I have ever had the privilege to work with. To further evaluate his worthiness, we flushed 719T’s dam back to 71I. She produced big and now we began to analyze these 10 full brothers. Again they were low birth, born early, and developed like peas in a pod. At print time of this catalog we are highly undecided on which full sib is our pick. However on February 7th there will be 10 full brothers that walk thru the sale ring, selling in their entirety. The lineage of this mating is something the breed has waited sometime for: low birth, high growth, easy on the eye and the low input kind. This mating is working against the norm of combining generally antagonistic traits into a cohesive blend of excellence. Terms of interest & possession to be announced on Lots 45-54.

In 2007 Circle A ranch, Iberia, Mo., agreed to participate in a research project with the American Hereford Associ-ation designed to determine and measure the advantages of using Hereford genetics on commercial Angus cows.
Circle A used 10 Hereford bulls with the goal of compar-ing the best of its Angus herd to the best of the Hereford-Angus cross.
Throughout the project, weaning weight and economi-cally relevant traits such as feedlot gain, feed efficiency and fertility of the black baldie females were all measured and compared to straight commercial Angus cattle. Dan Moser, associate professor of genetics at Kansas State University analyzed and interpreted the collected data.
Results from the project documented the Hereford ef-ficiency advantage. With a 7% increase in conception rate, along with improved feed efficiency and average daily gain, Herefords were proven the right choice for commercial producers today.
Vern Pierce, Univesity of Missouri associate professor of agricultural economics, evaluated the performance differ-ences between the Hereford and Angus groups includ-ing birth, weaning and feedlot growth and carcass data on the steer calves, and pregnancy rates from the female progeny of the sire groups. He developed an economic model projecting the added value of Hereford heterosis over a 10-year period and found that using Hereford bulls on Angus-based females would add $514 net over the life of a cow or approximagely $51 per cow per year to a rancher’s bottom line.
Economic models also predicted that after 10 years, due to increased fertility and longevity Hereford-sired females would generate a 20% advantage in herd size versus the straight Angus commercial cows due to increased calving and replacement options.
Bottom line: According to Pierce, if a rancher with Angus-based cows uses Hereford bulls compared to using Angus bulls he will have improved cash flow, increased herd size and more calves to sell over a 10-year period.
Projectspecifics:• 600 Circle A commercial Angus females were randomly AI-bred to 10 Hereford sires, of both proven and unprov-en genetics.
• The control group included progeny from three proven Angus sires, one being the top Angus sire for registrations in 2008. The average EPDs of the Angus sires would place them in the top 30% of the Angus breed for birth weight and 20% of the breed for weaning weight.
• Average birth weight for the Hereford-sired calves was 72 lb. -3lb heavier than the Angus sires, but extremely desirable and nearly ideal for commercial operations.
• At weaning, the Hereford-sired calves were 11.9 lb. heavier than the Angus-sired calves, despite the Angus sires ranking in the top 20% of their breed for weaning EPD.
• Resulting heifer calves were developed and bred at Circle A’s Lineville, Iowa, ranch. Conception rates were tracked.
• A portion of the steer calves were fed to harvest and placed on a feed efficiency test at the Circle A feedlot in Huntsville, Mo.
• While both breed groups were similar for fat thick-ness (Angus + 0.52 vs. Hereford = 0.54), Hereford-sired steers had about 13 more lb. of carcass weight and about 3/4 of an inch more ribeye area.
• While feed conversion was nearly identical, Here-ford-sired steers out gained the Angus-sired steers by almost 15-hundreths of a lb. per day.
• Heifer calves were bred and part of the group was marketed through the Circle A Production Sale with the baldie average price $110 more that the straight blacks.

• Circle A staff appreciated the disposition of the Here-ford-sired calves.
AboutCircleARanch:
Circle A ranch is a 32,000-acre, 10,000-head seedstock and commercial cow-calf operation headquartered in Iberia, Mo., with satellite operations in Stockton and Huntsville, Mo., and Lineville, Iowa. Owned by the Dave Gust Family, Circle A’s motto is “Quality beef is our business.” Circle A markets more that 400 black and Red Angus bulls and 500 Angus females annually.
The 9,000-head commercial herd has provided a great, “real life” testing ground for the registered seedstock op-eration in the world to accurately describe genetic differ-ences for both output and input costs and develope a true profitability index.
As founders of the Angus Sire Alliance and partners with ABS Global, Circle A has aggressively tested the Angus breeds most promising genetics in their 9,000 head com-mercial herd and then rapidly multiplied the most profit-albe genetics in their high-quality registered herd.
In May 2007, Circle A opened Circle A feeders, a 5,000-head feedlot all under one roof, designed to capture added value and increase returns for Circle A customers. To qualify, the calves must be sired by a bull or out of a female purchased directly from Circle A Angus Ranch. The calves must weigh between 600-800 lb. as calf feds, have two complete rounds of vaccinations and be weaned for a minimum of 45 days.

SINNER BROS. & BRESNAHAN
Risk Management the “Big Picture”
In December of 2008, the Feeder Contract was approximately 85.50, in December 2010 we are looking at 119.50, roughly $275/head improvement. Granted, expenses are higher but $275 in two years just illustrates market volatility and the risk/reward in the cattle business. It is a blessing to see profitability in 2010 and opportunity for profitability in 2011.
November 2011 Feeder cattle contract is around the $118 to $119 area. So the magic question, do we hedge, do we use options, do we use option spreads, do we use insurance, do we forward contract, or do we just roll the dice?
One of the marketing specialists I work with, (like many analysts these days), believes we are in an inflationary period and anticipates all commodities moving higher. But even though he’s a commodity bull, he still protects his farming/cattle operation with option spreads. When asked why he hedges when he believes so strongly in the bull market, his comment is “I could be wrong”. However his “big picture” view is that he owns some land and equipment so, as commodities move higher, those assets move higher too, so up goes his net worth, so he doesn’t really feel a need to hit a home run each year.
Risk management isn’t for everyone, but many of the alliance producers believe in risk management and have utilized forward contracting. It can work well for both the producer and the feedlot because it helps manage cash flow and profitability for both.
A number of years ago, when we formed the alliance we determined our goal was to improve Uniformity, Predictability, and Quality. Along the way it became pretty obvious that “efficiency” would continue to become a greater concern. $5 plus corn continues to rubber stamp our decision to focus on calmer and better feed efficient cattle. But even more important has been the trusted relationship we have with many producers. This year, an alliance producer (who had forward contracted his cattle with us) had cattle that were not perfectly healthy at delivery time. They informed us of the problem, treated the cattle, and asked to deliver the cattle two weeks later than the forward contracted specified. It might have been a situation where they could have slipped one by us but they didn’t even consider it. It was one of those times where you realize that even though the quality was there, integrity trumps quality.

The look and style of 743 progeny says it all. Style surrounds the genetic pool of TH donor dams in this set of 743 sons. In the 2009 breeding season we selected our moderate-framed, soggy, deep-middled kind of females to be used on 743. The result is a set of calves with the commercial mans’ middle, capacity, per-formance needs as well as the look that so many desire. The 743 two year old heifers are moderate-framed, deep-middled and clean made. Cattleman’s Banquet
Bismarck, nd
In our 22-year tenure as seedstock producers, many in-fluential industry leaders have offered their ideas and be-liefs that have aided in the development of our program.
The ranch was established in 1945 by our grandfather, Woodrow Topp, with our father, Merlin, entering the operation in 1965. They annually marketed approxi-mately 60 bulls from their 200 head cow/calf operation until Merlin’s death in 1980.
The ranch remained intact by our mother, Kathy, who bought the operation and continued raising cattle. The purebred Herefords were eventually moved to commer-cial status and to this day the commercial unit is the largest sector of the ranch. In 1984, Kathy remarried to Glenfield farmer/rancher, Larry Erickson. Today the operations function as a combined unit, each segment operating under individual ownership with shared re-sponsibilities among all sectors of the family.
The Development
It was the spring of 1989 when Topp Herefords started reassembling the purebred operation. I can’t calculate the endless miles that were logged trying to establish a foundation set of mother cows. We traveled the US and
Canada buying a few head here and there for roughly 5 years, assembling a registered herd. Indeed there were some great females in this group; however the inconsis-tency in production from top to bottom was evident. The good cows were building cow families, some of which still remain today, however the rest were not con-sistent enough to stay. Topp Herefords had now learned by trial and error that “look” was important, but cow families were built on a record of superior production that spanned over time.
It was the winter of 1996 when Topp Herefords worked out a lease agreement with Jim King, a very astute cattle-man from Red Deer, Alberta. This was the herd that developed the Burgundy, Primrose, Wildrose and Duch-ess cow families.
In the spring of 1997 Topp Herefords made the most influential purchase to date, the purchase of Klondike 28U 707B. 707B perfected the basics of female produc-tion. 707B fixed udder type, added efficiency, increased fertility, and most importantly boosted longevity. 707B undoubtedly laid the basis of our program.
Shortly thereafter Topp Herefords was fortunate enough to purchase the Ken Bougillan cowherd from Connecti-cut. This was the herd that produced the Queenmaker, Megan, and Vickie cow families.
Eventually the breed-changing RU Boulder 57G bull was purchased. 57G was by all means a bull that would change the look of Hereford cattle across America. They were more stout than the typical Hereford with that ex-tra rib and very easy on the eye. 57G consistently bred the type that the Hereford breed needed to see.
Other Topp Herefords additions have been the pick of
a group of females from the Jack & Bev Beeson cow-herd in Nebraska, as well as the Frank Kucera cowherd in Nebraska. Both of these herds are simple but highly effective in design: they must produce, maintain and re-breed problem-free. In time, these two cowherds will also write their own chapter of producing superior cow families that rise to the top.
The Development of a Program
Page 44
Our Commercial Customers Developed Topp Herefords
Every operation has a certain type of fuel that drives their program. At Topp Herefords it is that of com-mercial customers that purchase our bulls each February in our annual bull sale. Each fall we travel the country to see their results and get feedback. I would like to say that every comment is positive, but that would not be 100% factual. We take those comments back to Topp Herefords and make the necessary changes needed to ac-commodate our customers’ needs. Actually the mental-ity at Topp Herefords is quite simple. We focus on the feedback from our clientele and address any concerns through genetic pressure. We don’t try to push our be-liefs on our customers; rather we infuse their needs into our base mentality and genetics to create a common un-derstanding and ultimately create a better product.
The Relationship that Turned the Ranch into a Business
The operation had been marketing its commercial cattle to Tom Bresnahan, SB&B of Casselton, ND, for a num-ber of years. In March, 2004, Tom Bresnahan and I set out to create a feedlot alliance that would directly con-nect the commercial man to the feedlot, and the feedlot to the genetic base of the feeder cattle being purchased. The SB&B feedlot had been marketing their fat cattle using grid-based marketing and was now searching for a branded program to market through. However grid-based marketing and the Certified Hereford Beef pro-gram was not enough. Tom wanted access to a seedstock producer willing to make genetic changes to achieve cer-tain standards that satisfy grid-based marketing as well as CHB.
Today SB&B works with a large number of Topp Her-efords bull customers. SB&B buys the calves, feeds them and returns complete carcass results. Currently SB&B and Topp Herefords are refining the alliance structure to better accommodate the growing customer base. Tom and his staff at SB&B have brought a world of profes-sionalism and detail to Topp Herefords and we could not have asked for better partners.
Going Global
In the fall of 2010 Topp Herefords had the privilege of working with the Global Beef Project which involves the shipment of Hereford and Angus cattle to Khazakstan. Dan and Bill Price, Mandan, ND, have been heading up this project, which is the largest beef cattle export project of its kind. The dedication and organization of this project by Global Beef is something that Topp Her-efords has learned a great deal from and look forward to future endeavors with the Price Brothers.
Today’s Herd Sires
Today’s herd sires consist of superior cow families backed by generations of above-average production in all traits. The herd sires at Topp Herefords are consistent in type, each designed with a specific emphasis on individual genetic traits to improve each and every female bred at Topp Herefords. Topp Herefords has always believed in the fact that the female is the factory; the bull’s job is to maximize her potential.
The Females
Topp Herefords believes that the female is our factory. Our list of standards is short and simple. She must maintain on minimal inputs, rebreed in 60 days, be short-teated, level-uddered and be durable enough to produce for an extended period of time.
Where are the individual footnotes?
Yes we believe that each individual bull has his own mo-mentous story to tell, but we are not focused on just a few good bulls or families. We believe in balanced trait selection across the entire cow herd. Our bulls are bred to deliver a product that is consistent in type. This has been our belief for years and has subsequently produced a cowherd that delivers consistency. On February 7th you will not find outliers or a few great bulls. What you will see is a set of bulls that have been consistently culled with very strict guidelines to produce a large number of bulls that are similar both in pedigree and type.
Sincerely,
RyanTopp

The performance master. 125T’s progeny excel in growth and performance. Reared by the famous Primrose cow family. 125T females should excel with superior udder type that last forever. 125T’s grandam, 605F, is also dam of standout herd sire Bismarck 243R. We believe that 125T will be a sire that provides extra growth, while still providing adequate efficiencies. A sire that has definitely found his place at TH.

Progeny Sire of Lots 94-97
755T is one of the most consistent sires at TH. Progeny is born easy with substantial grrowth. The first calf daughters appear to be nice uddered, and the easy feeding kind. Bred similar to 719T, we look for 755T to breed on very similar.

December 20, 2010 In recent years, most all species of livestock have discovered the presence of Genetic abnormalities within their populations. This is not new, it is seen in the human population, plant population and animal population. However, how we deal with the issue of genetic abnormalities differently today. In the past, whole lines of a population were destroyed or condemned due to these abnormalities. With the advancement of science and technology, we are able to manage these issues in order to not destroy a line or species that could very well offer the industry the genetics and performance that is needed. Over the past few years, American Hereford Association (AHA) has discovered three genetic abnormalities within the Hereford population. These abnormalities are Dilutor (DL), Idiopathic Epilepsy (IE) and Hypotrichosis (HY). DL is a coat color abnormality that can be found when a Hereford bull is mated to black cows and a portion of the calves are grey. There is no calf performance loss due to DL and the only economic issue is when uniformity is lost due to different hair coat color. IE is listed as a Class 1 lethal abnormality and is a simple autosomal recessive gene. Being a recessive gene, the IE gene must be present in both parents and passed on to the progeny in order to produce an affected calf. HY is also a simple autosomal recessive and an affected calf can be born with partial to almost complete lack of hair. HY affected calves can also be born with very short, fine kinky hair that may fall out leaving bare spots or areas particularly susceptible to rubbing. Today, genomic technology allows us to manage these genetic problems without the archaic culling methods that have eliminated whole lines of valued genetics. We now have a diagnostic test, and that test has been added to the parent verification and animal profile platform at the AHA’s official DNA lab. Since November 1, 2009, the AHA has required that all new A.I sires and ET donor dams be tested for all genetic abnormalities. The AHA does not limit registration of these animals or their offspring, but all pedigrees will be listed with the results. If an animal is tested, then you will find its status next to its name in all pedigrees. If an animal is free of the genetic abnormality, then you will find an “F” after the acronym of the abnormality and if it is a carrier, then you will find a “C.” For instance, if an animal is tested and has been found to be free for Hypotrichosis, then you will find “HYF” next to that animals name. Two very important points to remember about genetic abnormality testing, 1. If an animal has both parents tested as free, and assuming that the pedigree is correct, then that animal is free of the genetic abnormality due to parentage. 2. If an animal has been tested as free and has a carrier back in its pedigree, then the animal will be free of that defect due to the results of the diagnostic test. 3. If an animal is tested as a carrier for a simple recessive genetic abnormality, it will never be a problem if that animal is not mated to a carrier. For example, if you see a bull that has been tested as a carrier for HY (HYC), but has the genetic make up and the performance level you need for your herd, buy with confidence. There are two things that could be done from this point forward. You could make this sire a terminal sire and slaughter all offspring, or you can retain females from this sire and just be sure that the next bull you buy is tested as “HYF.”

experience the difference
Ryans progressive leadership and approach to the seedstock and commercial livestock business is unparalleled in the cattle indus-try. His solid and forward moving programs aid all who are using Topp genetics and his continued quidance adds value to our respective cattle operations. The integrity brought to the cattle industry by Topp Herefords is the same that is so respected in all forward moving businesses today. - Rochester, MN Producer
My experience working with Topp Herefords has been great! Ryan, Prairie, Sue & Steve are all very professional in their jobs and are willing to help you out any way they can. The genetics you will find in Ryan’s herd are second to none, my F1 cross calves don’t take a back seat to my other sire groups in my pastures. I am looking forward to a great set of black baldy replacement females as well. I recently finished my first set of Topp genetics, and the carcass data came back with great numbers. This is definately a program to check out. - Fullerton, ND Producer
We began hearing more and more about hybrid vigor and the advantages of cross breeding and heterosis, and thought we should try something. Since our Black Angus Bulls were moderate birthweight bulls and we were happy with the “get up and go” of the Angus calves on cold March mornings, we decided to hold back our Polled Hereford bulls until about three weeks into the breeding season. Imagine our pleasant surprise that fall when we noticed our later born black baldy calves were the same size as their older black cousins. The baldy calves had caught up! That fall we were able to fill the ring with similar sized steer calves, and were rewarded appropriately. An added bonus was that neighbors began to call and ask about our baldy heifers for breeding purposes. Since we generally kept the blacks for ourselves, this worked out very nicely. Our baldy heifers always bring a premium.Turning out the Black Angus bulls first than the Polled Herfords about a month into the breeding season has worked out very well for us. Hybrid vigor and heterosis works! We’ll continue to use Topp Hereford Bulls in our breeding program. - Linton, ND Producer
