December 2014
Smart End-of-Year Actions for 2014 Don’t Miss a Great Opportunity!
Smart End-of-Year Giving for 2014
As we offer thanks and celebrate a great year, it is an appropriate time to consider supporting the various missions, min-istries, and programs that interest you. As part of our overall Extravagant Generosity stewardship campaign, and with an eye on end-of-year thoughtful giving, we would like to remind you of some wonderful opportunities which will support the church, while providing tax incentives to you.
Cash Gifts A cash gift in any amount is a convenient and popular way to show your faithful support for the church or other minis-tries. The full amount of your gift qualifies for a 2014 charitable income tax deduction – up to 50% of your adjusted gross income. Make certain the check is dated 2014 and received or postmarked no later than December 31, 2014 to receive a deduction in 2014.
Appreciated Property Gifts If you own investments that have increased in value (stocks, bonds, real estate, or mutual funds), you can donate them to a church or charity for the full fair market value and avoid declaring the capital gain of the assets as income. Many people consider this the equivalent of a “double deduction.”
SALE & GIFT DIRECT GIFT Stock’s Fair Market Value $1,000 Stock’s Fair Market Value $1,000 (Cost Basis $200) (Cost Basis $200) Taxable Gain on Sale $800 Taxable Gain on Contribution $0 Capital Gain Tax $120 Capital Gain Tax Due $0 Net Sale After Tax $880 Net Gift to Charity $1,000 Charitable Tax Deduction $880 Charitable Tax Deduction $1,000 Tax Savings @ 25% $220 Tax Savings @ 25% $250
Notice how the Direct Gift option can result in the church or charity receiving $120 more while costing you $30 less! To receive this special tax treatment, you must have owned the property.
Giving Life Insurance Do you own an old life insurance policy that is no longer needed? Perhaps the purpose for the policy no longer exists (your children are grown or your mortgage is paid off) or your financial situation has changed and mitigates the need for the insurance. Consider giving the policy to the church or a charity and receive a charitable income tax deduction for the lesser of your cost basis or the replacement value. This is a great way to benefit a cause you support without reducing your checking account. If the value is more than you wish to donate, consider cashing in the policy and giving a lesser portion. Your gift may sufficiently reduce or eliminate any potential taxes due from the sale.
Memorial Gifts As you think of those special persons (a teacher, pastor, relative or other loved one) who have touched your life, you may well want to do something “just right” to demonstrate that they are remembered. A memorial tribute can be a satisfy-ing way to salute those whose memories continue to enrich our lives.
IRA Rollover With the recent passage by Congress of a series of “one-year tax extenders, the IRA Charitable Rollover was extended through December 31, 2014. If you are 70 ½ or older, the Federal government permits you to rollover up to $100,000 from your IRA to charity without increasing your taxable income or paying any additional tax. These tax-free rollover gifts could be $1,000, $10.000, or any amount up to $100,000 this year. The Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) will count toward your annual minimum distribution (RMD). If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, contact your IRA custodian bank or brokerage firm for the IRA charitable distribution forms necessary to make your gift. Wise Tax Planning Making extra gifts or accelerating future gifts into the 2014 tax year can enable an itemized income tax deduction. The standard deduction threshold for 2014 is $12,400 for joint filers and $6,200 for singles. If your total deductions are less than those amounts, you won’t be able to deduct any charitable gifts. An extra year-end gift may add just enough to al-low you to take advantage of your full itemized deduction. Many tax-wise donors accelerate contributions for the coming year to enable itemization at least every other year.
It’s Also Time to Reflect on …
…Our Many Blessings! Year-end is a perfect time to take stock and reflect on our many blessings. It seems only natural to express our gratitude with a gift. While many of these gifts will be given to family and friends, we may also have been blessed by our church and other charitable organizations. Wouldn’t it make sense to remember these special organizations too? Charitable giv-ing is a great way to provide welcome support for others, and it also has a way of blessing the giver in return.
…Expressing Our Faith! Year-end is also the Christmas season. For many Christians this is an occasion to give in gratitude for God’s greatest gift to us, Jesus Christ. In all our giving, let us not forget these familiar words, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son…” Why not make a special effort to honor Him in your giving this Christmas season – it may be your most im-portant gift you give? May God bless you as you make this expression of faith.
So, Don’t Miss These Great Opportunities! To qualify for a 2014 charitable income tax deduction, your gift must be made by December 31, 2014. Complete your end-of-year planning and gift actions today and you will receive the tax benefits as well as the spiritual satisfaction of supporting your favorite ministries.
And Don’t Forget Online Giving As you contemplate potential donations to the church or a charity, note that most charitable organizations offer a vehicle for the convenience of online giving. If your desires lead you to a gift to Trinity UMC, please visit the church’s website at: www.umtrinity.org, where you can locate the link to our online giving page, and follow the instructions.
Estate Planning is also Important as You Look to the Future
It is always encouraged that as you reflect on what your Extravagant Generosity looks like today, you should also be looking toward the future so as to be proactive on your future tax situation. There may be a number of ways you can im-prove your tax and financial situation. Here is a short checklist of items to review:
Visit your attorney to update your will or trust if you have moved to a new state, married or divorced, given birth or adopted children, received an inheritance or other money or had a change of plans.
Review and update beneficiary designations on all insurance policies and retirement accounts. Check to see that you have all the important documents in place including durable powers of attorney, healthcare
powers and advance directives. Review and make any change to guardians for minor children.

A NOTE FROM THE TREASURER’S DESK December 22, 2014
Fellow Trinity Church Members and Worshippers,
With ten days left in 2014, we are coming down to the wire on year end gifts
and contributions. This is a critically important time for Trinity. In order to be
able to pay our apportionments and benevolences in full at the end of the year
and remain in compliance with the Bank covenant surrounding our outstanding
debt obligation to Wells Fargo, we need to collect approximately $90,000 be-
tween now and the end of the year.
While this is a large sum of money, it is not unusual for us to be in this position
at the end of the year. In my three years as Treasurer, we have always had very
strong year-end giving which has allowed us to meet all of our obligations. I am
optimistic that we will be successful again this year.
Should we fall short of this goal, the finance committee will likely have to rec-
ommend that we not pay some portion of our remaining benevolences. In a
worst case scenario, if our giving over the last ten days is not enough to manage
our bank covenant we will need to negotiate with the bank for a waiver, which
they may or may not elect to provide to us.
Thus, as we move through this very special time of year and as you complete
your year-end tax planning, please think of Trinity and consider making as
meaningful a contribution as you are financially able. Remember what the
Stewardship team has shared – Extravagant Generosity make you feel good,
and respond spiritually to God’s desires of us.
On behalf of the Finance Committee, the Trinity Clergy, the Trinity Staff and
the Trustees, thank you for your kind and generous gifts.
Sincerely,
James W. Loving, Jr.
Treasurer, Trinity United Methodist Church
THE 12 DAYS OF THE 12 DAYS OF THE 12 DAYS OF THE 12 DAYS OF
CHRISTMASCHRISTMASCHRISTMASCHRISTMAS
The Meaning Behind the Words of the Song
The Twelve Days of Christmas is probably the most misunderstood part of the church year among
Christians who are not part of liturgical church traditions. Contrary to much popular belief, these
are not the twelve days before Christmas, but in most of the Western Church are the twelve days
from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany (January 6; the 12 days count from December 25
until January 5).
1. The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ. The partridge will feign injury to protect its
nestlings who are defenseless.
2. The two turtledoves are the Old and New Testaments. They symbolize that both Testaments
are offered by even the poorest of people and tell the story of God to the world. .
3. Three French hens are the three theological virtues faith, hope and love.
4. The four colling birds are the four Gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
5. The five gold rings recall the Torah (Instructions) the first five books of the Old Testament
(TaNaK). Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
6. The six geese a-laying stand for the six days of creation and God’s sustaining the world.
7. Seven swans a-swimming represent the sevenfold gifts of the Spirit: prophecy, ministry, teach-
ing, exhortation, giving, leading, and compassion. (not prioritized)
8. The eight maids a-milking are the eight beatitudes: blessed are: the poor in spirit, those who
mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart,
the peacemakers, those persecuted for righteousness’ sake.
9. Nine ladies dancing are the nine fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (not prioritized)
10. The ten lords a-leaping are the Ten Commandments.
11. Eleven pipers piping stand for the eleven faithful disciples: Peter, Andrew, James, John, Phillip,
Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James bar Alphaeus, Simon, and Judas bar James.
12. Twelve drummers drumming symbolize the 12 points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

come”), set by JG Walther. The Anthem is a 2006 setting
by Bob Chilcott of the English tune often associated with Away in a
Manger. The Offertory was composed in 1760 by William Boyce

III. The Postlude is a short and festive finale to GF Handel’s Con-
certo in F, opus 4#5.
