Unit 4 VocabularyProperties of Algebraic Notation
Expression• One or more numbers, variables, or numbers and variables with
one or more operations.
a + 1
a - b
3x
10 - 8/ b
Equation • A statement that two expressions are equal. It has an equal sign.
X + 2 = 6
Term• a number, variable, product, or quotient in an expression. Each term
is separated by an operation sign.
Simplify• To combine like terms and perform operations until all terms have
been combined.
Identity Property • The product of 1 and any number equals that number.
Distributive Property • You can multiply a sum by a number, or multiply each addend by
the number and ad the products, to get the same result.
Commutative Property• Changing the order of the addends/factors does not change the
sum/product. (Only works for addition and multiplication)
Associative Property• Grouping the addends/factors in different ways does not change the
sum/product. • (Only works for addition and multiplication)
Order of Operations:• When more than one operation is present.• Remember: PEMDAS (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally)
• Parenthesis• Exponents• Multiply• Divide• Add• Subtract
• Operations inside parenthesis are performed first.
• Then multiply and divide from left to right. • Then add and subtract from left to right.
Prime number
•Any number whose only factors are 1 and itself.
Ex. 2, 13, 17
Composite Number
•A whole number that has more than two factors.•Ex. 4, 8, 81
