• Next best 3 subjects study score

Maximizing your ATARStudying smarter – not harder

• Homework vs study – How effective is your study technique? 2.5 – 3 hours a night

• Study Schedule/Timetable – allocate specific time periods and stick to these.

• Study Environment – good lighting, ventilation, comfortable chair, be able to spread out, no distractions (TV, phone, social media), tools needed, snacks for study time, etc.

• Getting ahead and staying there

• Stress Management – Not always bad, regular breaks, exercise, be prepared, plenty of sleep, diet, etc.

Maximizing your ATAR

Maximizing your ATARSmart use of resources and time

• Time Management – plan each week ahead of time, to do lists, goals for each study period/session, document all due dates, etc.

• Time Saving Strategies – learn theory throughout the year (no cramming), use wait time (eg. car ride), highlight tricky concepts , complete tasks as you get them, etc.

• Wise use of resources – teachers, school, texts, tutors, external providers (eg exam prep sessions).

Maximizing your ATAR• Try to keep one day each weekend free for study

Social Networking Research

• Students who use social networking sites (eg FB) while doing homework receive much lower grades – 20% lower

• It didn’t matter if the site was in the background or on a phone

• Interestingly 75% of students indicated that they didn’t believe spending time on social media affected their academic performance = DENIAL

Maximizing your ATARHaving the correct mindset

• What do successful students have in common? • challenging but achievable goals• ability to cope with stress, setbacks and disappointment• readiness to learn from mistakes• able to prioritise• avoid procrastination• high level of determination and confidence.

• Goal Setting – everyone should have a clear set of goals for their VCE. You have to find something to aim for →motivation to study when pressure becomes high.

• To assist students, Goal Setting will form part of the Mentor Program.

Being an Effective VCE Parent• Guide, support and encourage

• Don’t nag

• Don’t tell them they will fail if they don’t work harder

• Encourage healthy eating, regular exercise and plenty of sleep

• Take their efforts seriously

• Create an effective work space in the house

• Take a whole family approach to supporting them

• Don’t overload with domestic chores

• Let them know that you're there if they need you

• Encourage them to believe in themselves

• Remind them of their goals

• Give positive feedback

• Remember the final year is about them not you

• Encourage them to take study breaks

• Help them keep things in perspective

• Keep an eye on emotional health – look for changes

Being an Effective VCE Parent

• Offer to read set novels and “proof read” work

• Keep a calendar of “due dates” & SAC/SAT dates

• Make appointments out of school hours

• Contact the school with concerns

• Encourage some sport/relaxation/sensible social behaviour

• Encourage effective time management
