VCE Requirements

• Pass/Satisfy 16 semester units

• Satisfactorily complete 3 units from the English group across Unit 1 –4, including the 3/4 sequence

• Satisfactorily complete 3 other sequences of Units 3 and 4 Studies

Satisfactory Completion of the VCE

• Meet the attendance requirements for each study.

• Demonstrate the Outcomes for the unit by completing assessment tasks.

• Assessment tasks are called SACs, or for practical components – SATs.

• Complete the required coursework

VCE Attendance

• 90% in class subjects (N Result regardless of assessment results).

• 8 or more ‘unapproved’ absences in a unit of study will result in ‘N’ for the unit. A double lesson counts as 2 absences.

• 15 or more absences in total (i.e. approved/unapproved) excluding legitimate college activities such as sport or excursions and excluding extended illness approved by the Head of School (e.g. time in hospital) will result in ‘N’ for the unit.

• Arriving late to class counts as ½ an unapproved absence

• Medical certificates are to be provide to the Senior School Office

VCE Attendance• Attendance at SAC’s is Compulsory.

• Must have a medical certificate or equivalent or will receive an N result for original assessment task (will need to redeem this)

• Notify teacher and Senior School before if can’t attend

• Alternate SACs/ Reschedules – Wednesday period 5&6 in Room V2

From other classes on the day

• Students are expected to attend every timetabled lesson before a SAC task.

• If classes are missed on the day of a SAC a medical certificate must be provided.

What is included in the calculation?

• English (EAL, Literature and/or English Language) study score (must be over 25 for Uni entrance)

• Next best 3 subjects study score

• 10% of any 5th or 6th subject’s study score

Maximizing your ATARStudying smarter – not harder

• Homework vs study – How effective is your study technique? 2.5 – 3 hours a night

• Study Schedule/Timetable – allocate specific time periods and stick to these.

• Study Environment – good lighting, ventilation, comfortable chair, be able to spread out, no distractions (TV, phone, social media), tools needed, snacks for study time, etc.

• Getting ahead and staying there

• Stress Management – Not always bad, regular breaks, exercise, be prepared, plenty of sleep, diet, etc.

Maximizing your ATARSmart use of resources and time

• Time Management – plan each week ahead of time, to do lists, goals for each study period/session, document all due dates, etc.

• Time Saving Strategies – learn theory throughout the year (no cramming), use wait time (eg. car ride), highlight tricky concepts , complete tasks as you get them, etc.

• Wise use of resources – teachers, school, texts, tutors, external providers (eg exam prep sessions).

Maximizing your ATAR• Try to keep one day each weekend free for study

Social Networking Research

• Students who use social networking sites (eg FB) while doing homework receive much lower grades – 20% lower

• It didn’t matter if the site was in the background or on a phone

• Interestingly 75% of students indicated that they didn’t believe spending time on social media affected their academic performance = DENIAL

• What do successful students have in common? • challenging but achievable goals• ability to cope with stress, setbacks and disappointment• readiness to learn from mistakes• able to prioritise• avoid procrastination• high level of determination and confidence.

• Goal Setting – everyone should have a clear set of goals for their VCE. You have to find something to aim for →motivation to study when pressure becomes high.

• To assist students, Goal Setting will form part of the Mentor Program.

Being an Effective VCE Parent• Guide, support and encourage

• Don’t nag

• Don’t tell them they will fail if they don’t work harder

• Encourage healthy eating, regular exercise and plenty of sleep

• Take their efforts seriously

• Create an effective work space in the house

• Take a whole family approach to supporting them

• Don’t overload with domestic chores

• Let them know that you're there if they need you

• Encourage them to believe in themselves

• Remind them of their goals

• Give positive feedback

• Remember the final year is about them not you

• Encourage them to take study breaks

• Help them keep things in perspective

• Keep an eye on emotional health – look for changes

Being an Effective VCE Parent

• Offer to read set novels and “proof read” work

• Keep a calendar of “due dates” & SAC/SAT dates

• Make appointments out of school hours

• Contact the school with concerns

• Encourage some sport/relaxation/sensible social behaviour

• Encourage effective time management

• Ensure daily attendance at school

• GAT Wednesday 12th June (any student completing a Yr 12 Subject)

• Yr 11 Unit 1 Exams–Monday 3rd – Friday 7th June

• Yr 11 Unit 1 Exams – Monday 11th – Thursday 21st November

• Yr 12 Written Exams - occur from 30th October through to 20th

November

General Achievement Test - GAT• GAT Wednesday 12th June

• All students completing a Unit 3 & 4 sequence (Yr 12 Subject) must sit the GAT

• 3-hour exam – multiple choice and two written tasks

• Importance of the GAT:• Used to moderate school assessment

• Used as a checking measure to ensure exam results reflect a student's ability

• Used if a Derived Examination Score application is needed

Special Provision – Derived Examination Score• Year 12 Derived Examination Scores are by application. As such, all

students must make every effort to attend all exams

• Within the examination period

• Not for ongoing situations

• Cannot be used as a compensation for learning that has not occurred.

• If a student is negatively impacted by a medical or personal circumstanceduring or immediately prior to the exam period they must see Ms McCormack urgently

Special Entry Access Scheme – SEAS• Scheme to recognise disadvantage that students may have

experienced during their VCE.

• Completed with VTAC applications for Tertiary study

• Categories include:

• Category 1: Personal information and location.

• Category 2: Disadvantaged financial background.

• Category 3: Disability or medical condition.

• Category 4: Difficult circumstances
