New Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance SystemsNew Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance Systems began in Queensland with students entering Year 11 in 2019.

The new system includes:

• A model that uses school-based assessment and external assessment.

• Processes that strengthen the quality and comparability of school- based assessment.

• Introducing the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Program

The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is Queensland’s senior secondary schooling qualification. It is internationally recognised and provides evidence of senior schooling achievements.

The QCE is issued to eligible students when they meet all the requirements, either at the completion of Year 12, or after they have left school.

The New QCE System• There are significant changes to senior syllabuses.• New subjects will be available – Year 11 2021.• The new senior assessment model combines school

Vocational Education

Sarina State High School applies pre-requisites to senior subjects. Pre-requisites are applied to ensure students select courses in which they have the most capability to be successful.

Note that students need to demonstrate at least a C standard in English in Year 10 to undertake any General subject in Year 11.

In Senior Secondary at Sarina State High School we offer:Ancient History, Biology, Chemistry, Design, Drama, English, Geography, Legal Studies, Marine

Science, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics, Modern History, Physical Education, Physics and Visual Art.

• Courses approved by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA).• Academic subjects attracting higher ATAR scores for University placement (QTAC

Ranks) and Queensland Certificate of Education accreditation.

Vocational Education

VET QualificationsWhen a student completes or partially completes multiple qualifications from within the same VET training package (e.g. Certificate II in Business and Certificate III in Business), the highest level qualification in the Core category of learning will contribute credit towards a QCE.

To ensure the breadth of learning, a maximum of eight credits from the same training package can contribute to a QCE.

All completed qualifications are recorded on the statement of results.

Every effort will be made to ensure that student preferences are accommodated, subject to student numbers and timetable constraints.

If you have any concerns or have reason to request Sarina State High School waive the pre-requisite, you will need to make an appointment with Ms Paula Mazlin, Deputy Principal, and the Curriculum Head of Department.

to study Specialist Mathematics must also study Mathematical Methods.

• It is recommended that students wanting to study Physics also study Mathematical Methods.

What is an ATAR?(Australian Tertiary Admission Rank)

Primary mechanism used nationally for tertiary admissions.ATAR is NOT a grade, it is a rank.

Calculated by QTAC – best 5 subjects.

2 000 point scale 99.95 down to 0.00. (0.05 increments)ATARs less than 30.00 will be expressed as ‘30 and below’.

Indicates a student’s position relative to other students.

No Common Test

Subject scaling applied

English subject mandatory

Used across Australia

An English Subject is COMPULSORYMust achieve C Standard in English to be eligible for an ATAR

English result will not be a mandatory inclusion in the calculation of an ATAR

External Assessment – General Subjects• Common to all Queensland schools.• Conducted in Year 12 - Same time, same day over 17 days in Term 4.• Developed and marked by QCAA.• Assessing subject matter from Units 3 and 4 Only – General Mathematics

and Science Subjects, Drama and Visual Art.• Mathematics and Science subjects will have a weighting of 50% External

Assessment.• For all other General subjects it will assess subject matter from Unit 4

only.• All other General subjects will have a weighting of 25% External

Assessment.• Students will receive a mark out of 100.• At certification – overall result as a mark between 0 and 100 and exit

result (A-E).

Assessment – Applied Subjects

• Results will be based on 4 internal assessment (in-class exams, assignments, essay).

• Exemptions are: Essential English and Essential Mathematics. These subjects will have an external component based on Unit 3 which is set by the QCAA but marked by the school (25%).

• Applied subjects will only receive a Letter grade A – E.
