1. Mae Carol Jemison was born on October 17, 1956, in Decatur, Alabama. When she was 3 years old, her family moved to Chicago.

2. Mae Jemison says that her parents supported her interests and gave her a thirst for learning.

3. In 1973 she graduated with high honors and won a scholarship to Stanford University.

4. At Stanford she earned a degree in both chemical engineering and African and African-American studies.

5. She then went on to medical school at Cornell University in New York. While there she also visited and studied in Cuba and Kenya.

6. After her internship at USC Medical center, she became a Peace Corps medical officer in Sierra Leone and Liberia for 2 years.

7. When she came back to the United States, she decided to follow her dream of becoming an astronaut. She was one of 2,000 applicants.

8. In 1987 Mae Jemison became the first African-American woman ever admitted into the astronaut training program.

9. On September 12, 1992, Jemison flew into space with six other astronauts aboard the Endeavour on mission STS 47.

10. During her 8 days in space, she ran experiments on weightlessness and motion sickness on the crew and herself.

11. When she returned to earth she said that society should know how much both women and members of minority groups can give if given the chance.

12. She has been given many important awards. She is also a member of the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the National Medical Association Hall of Fame.

14. In 1993 she left NASA and was awarded a teaching fellowship at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

15. She also formed a company called the Jemison Group. This company looks to improve health care in developing countries using technology.
