Practical tips to motivate students in the classroom

Praise students by recognizing their work in class, display their good work in the classroom and send positive notes to parents to acknowledge their hard

work.

Set high but realistic expectations by articulating them. Celebrate when

expectations are met with.

Use teaching strategies to ensure feedback is maximized in your classroom.

Help students develop study habits.

Spread excitement by show your enthusiasm in the subject and use appropriate, concrete and understandable examples to help students grasp the

subject matter.

Go for differentiated instruction for daily instruction. Use anchor chart or journal for 10 minutes to open class; introduce the concept for 15 minutes; discussion, analysis or group work for 15 minutes; quiz session or guided work to finish the class in 10 minutes. This way, students know what to expect everyday and have more opportunity to get engaged in learning.

Assign classroom responsibilities for the next week. Responsibilities can include posting to the class blog; updating episodic learning calendar; updating display, review work of weekly learning; public relations work for invited talks,

etc.

If students take ownership of what you do in class, then they have less room to

complain

After reviewing the unit test answers, provide feedback and remedial learning.

Give special assignments on hard spots of learning.

Track Improvement through self-evaluation and revisit parts of the topic or

revise them.

Include service opportunities, cultural experiences, and extracurricular activities into the curriculum for extra credit or as alternative options on assignments.

Motivate students beyond the classroom. Plan field trips with your students

after brainstorming potential field trips
