People who defended slavery likely believed that it was good for slave owners. Douglass’s description of Mr. Sever shows that inflicting violence on slaves make people like him begin to enjoy committing violent acts, corrupting him. Douglass uses words like: fiendish barbarity to show that Severe has lost his human decency.
