GENRE CHARACTERISTICS

The video itself is very up beat and has a fast tempo, therefore this song can be considered a dance track. The fast cuts between the shots carry the classic conventions of a dance music video as they follow the beat of the song keeping the audience intrigued by what they are experiencing and may want them to watch it again so they can grasp other aspects of the music video, that may have been impossible to take from the first observation.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS & VISUALSIn all music videos

there is a connection between the lyrics and visuals, this can be through either imagery and text or even how the music video in edited. In Beyoncé's ‘Why don’t you love me’ video imagery is used to link the lyrics to the visuals. Some examples of this are:

“Keep my head in them books…”

LYRICS & VISUALS (CONT.)

“Why don’t you love me…”(the context of this visual relates to the lyric, she is obviously saddened by the fact she is questioning how much this person loves her)

“I got ass…”(this visual shows she is accentuating her body parts to match the lyric)

MUSIC & VISUALS The variations of

camera shot in this music video follow the beat of the music. The following image shows the dramatic changes in camera shot from mid-shots to close-ups.

DEMANDS OF THE RECORD LABEL

Beyoncé is signed to Columbia Records, she is one of their main attributes therefore they will want her face to be recognised. Therefore in the music video, many close up shots are made; this in turn allows the audience to see who Beyoncé is.

INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES

The way Beyoncé is positioned in this shot makes it seem as If she is some sort of host, as she is presenting herself to be perfect and wants everyone to be looking at her.

WHY THIS VIDEO?I chose this video because I like

the style in which it is shot, with the colouristaion and retro style setting. The video itself is set apart from the usual pop/dance music videos with its use of props and overall style; it is very different to the conventional style of pop/dance music videos. Another reason why I chose this video is because I like how Beyoncé can change her personal style to apply to another genre which she is not always associated with.
