What is writing?

It’s a skill, a process and an outcome .its a way to express

ourselves in the simplest manner.

One needs to practice to excel this skill. Not every one is

a born writer, one can acquire the skill through exposure

and practice.

One needs to read a lot and have enough subject

knowledge about the topic that one needs to write upon.

Reading is the input that leads to a skilled output i.e.

What is a Topic sentence ?

As the name itself reveals ,it explains about the topic of your

paragraph.

A topic sentence has two purposes:

Firstly, it opens the paragraph revealing the main idea or streamline

about it.

Secondly, it tells you what the paragraph is about.

It’s like the main idea or theme of the paragraph. If you are being

asked to find the central idea of the paragraph in one sentence that

will be the topic sentence.

Position of topic sentence in a paragraph

Your paragraph should be left indented/ left

alignment.

Topic sentence doesn’t have a fixed place in the paragraph.

You might end up assuming the first sentence of every

paragraph to be the topic sentence, which might prove

incorrect.

However, in news paper or magazine articles, the topic

sentence is usually the first sentence in the paragraph.

Supporting details

Concluding statement

These sentences add more detail and adds to the

information about the particular topic explained in the topic

sentence

A sentence which sums up the main idea given in the topic

sentence.

Activity 1-Instructions

Read the paragraph and identify;

Topic sentence (T.S)

Supporting details (S.D)

Concluding statement (C.S)

Reading- “Disability is not Inability”

No one is perfect in this world except Allah Almighty. Individuals

suffer from a certain degree of disability ranging from physical to

emotional. People begin to feel impaired and unable to provide for

themselves in one way or the other. These disabilities can be

capitalized as foundations of success and happiness even if they

tend to cage the afflicted individuals from living a normal life. Yet,

there remains the thought that even if people are impaired by their

disabilities , they can still be productive members of the society and

lead a happy life.

Activity 1 Example Paragraph ‘Reading for pleasure’

Curling up with a good book and reading for pleasure is less

common now a days than it used to be. Increasingly, people

are using electronic books on their home computers. There is

endless choice and it saves on the expense of buying that

new book you so want to read by your favourite author. This

trend, though ,adds a whole new dimension to reading just a

few chapters before you go to sleep, snuggled up under your

duvet. Difficult with a computer!
