Planning and The Fine Art of Persuasion

DESCRIPTION

Street Oriented. Pedestrian Friendly. Big Box. Mixed Use. Urban—dare we say it—Sprawl. As professionals trained to speak "planner," we know what these words mean, and we often use them as shorthand when we communicate with colleagues, applicants, and community members about a proposed plan, bylaw, or development. The only problem is that speaking "planner" rarely results in the planning outcomes we're looking for. Colleagues, community members and applicants often end up either confused, or entirely unconvinced about the merits (or lack thereof) of whatever we happen to be speaking about. This, despite our best efforts and finest planning lingo! "Planning and The Fine Art of Persuasion" shares five key insights on how planners can communicate effectively with colleagues, applicants, and community members. The presentation and interactive workshop were shared at the 2014 conference of the Alberta Professional Planners Institute in Kananaskis, Alberta.
