In northern Romania, lies the county of Maramures. Here, amidst mountains, hills and depressions are one of the most interesting tourism objects in the country, yet very well kept. Here, people lead their lives as authentically and peacefully as in the old times.

Maramures covers 3381 sq km of valleys, beautiful villages, hills and mountains (up to 2303 m high). On this small surface are preserved over 100 wooden churches (8 of them listed on UNESCO list), a natural reserve also protected by UNESCO

One of the 8 UNESCO wooden churches in Maramures, the Wooden Church of Plopis. was erected in 1798 and it stands 47 meters high. The church is an amazing display of wooden architecture and carving techniques. The paintings inside are made by a local artist and aren't very well preserved.

The paintings were made in 1811 by Ştefan of Şişeşti, as shown by an inscription on an icon, but they are preserved only on the vaults of the naos and the chancel and on the iconostasis. The vault of the naos has a three-lobed section, with a main vault and side vaults on both sides. This is a unique structure among the wooden churches. The central vault has in the middle a representation of The Holy Trinity, with the Virgin Mary at the east end. The side vaults have scenes from The Life and Passions of Christ.

angel announcing the Judgment.

A row of seated yellow-robed Prophets lines the northern and southern sides of the naos vault. Under the Prophets are scenes from the Cycle of the Passion of Christ.
