STREETCAR FUNDING

• Two-mile north-south streetcar

• 75 % funding = innovative local public /private funding

• Local Govt identified a Transportation Development

District around the route that would directly benefit

– residential and commercial property owners voted in support

– Votes: 319 yes, 141 no

– A 1 percent sales tax in the area was also approved

• Part of a $2 billion vision to transform Adelaide’s transport

system

• Strong opposition during planning / construction

• Completed in March 2010

– PT patronage increased 40% to and from Glenelg

– Today the line carries 20,000 people daily

• Economic analysis 2008 -2011:

– Final BCR higher than identified in planning

– An extra 1,354 jobs within 400m of the light rail system

– Associated value far exceeded construction costs

GOLD COAST, G:Link

• Stage 1: – G:Link commenced 20 July 2014

– 13km, 16 stations

• Stage 2: – 7.3km dual track connecting light and heavy rail

– Construction to commence April 2016

– Operational by Feb 2018, in time for the April 2018 Commonwealth Games

– 2 park and ride facilities (1400 carparks)
