Siyavula

●Siyavula is a social enterprise built on community, openness and technology, working to make high quality educational resources available to every learner and teacher in South Africa.

●Openly-licensed Maths and Science focused textbooks ●Collaboratively authored with volunteers (educators, students, curriculum

advisors, professors, educational specialists)●These are the current OERs that we have with accompanying websites,

and mobile sites●Government has printed Siyavula textbooks for ALL learners since

2011●Many schools had never had textbooks before, so these were the first

resoucres they ever have●Initially, textbooks seen as supplementary resources to traditional textbooks●Now, more schools opting to only use Siyavula textbooks

Siyavula – adoption strategies

●Government schools already receive our textbooks for free●However, many schools did not use them at first●Although, learners did:●Focus on making content most accessible to your target market, on the

platform that they use●You need to engage with and assess what your audience already uses, in

order to maximise on this so that they start using your content ●For South African youth, its mobile phones●Our highschool Maths and Science websites and mobile sites were

lanuched in January 2012 ●We have 500 000 visitors per month●We have also made our content available on Mxit – a chatroom service

very popular amongst SA youth●Has hugely increased the use of our content – learners refer to our

resources as 'the textbook in their pockets'

Siyavula – adoption strategies

● We are here to stay

● Continuous improvement

● Engaging the community

● Being 'open'

● Siyavula slate of open textbooks

We are here to stay●In order to get educators, schools, provinces and government to adopt,

need to show that you are committed and invested●We do school visits, evening events, workshops, attend local conferences,

showing the public that we are worth investing inContinuous improvement●Due to its online nature, it is continuously improved●Educators like to see that the content is not static, and that each year that

they use our content, it will improveEngaging the community●Collaborative authoring model for new books●Eductors who are involved in the process to put the content together, are

more likely to then use itBeing 'open'

●Not just about producing open content, but being open and honest about our processes, our goals, where we are going, what we want to do

●This allows eductors to feel like they are part of the team Siyavula Slate of open textbooks

●We need to cover more than just Maths and Science●Educators, schools, provinces and government want a wider range to cover

more subjects●More likely to then use textbooks from a whole series●We will and are developing a catalogue of open titles ●Provinces and schools can choose from to print at cost price●Available across all platforms●This will have a significant impact on the use of open textbooks in South

Africa
