COMBAT WITH 5 TROUBLEMAKERS IN YOUR CHECKOUT PROCESS
Have you ever wondered
why your customers
abandoned purchasing
though they have been in
half the way completing
checkout? Perhaps the
reason is that your store’s
checkout process is upset
by 5 troublemakers. Let’s
identify and sweep them
away!
1. Too many steps
2. Obligatory registration
3. Hidden fees
4. Incomplete filling information
5. Too much ambiguous information
STEP: TOO MUCH STEPS
It is obvious that a complicated checkout process leads to the higher rate of abandoning
among customers. The ideal checkout procedure includes a single page for customers to
review their order, fill in billing and shipping information and decide method of payment.
Provide customers a progress indicator
in case you have multiple steps so they
could manage which stage they are right
now and how long it will take to complete
the order. This provides customers a
sense of control and help them eliminate
confusion.
REGISTRATION: OBLIGATORY
Demanding customers’ registration in checkout process is a big no-no as it takes
customers time and effort to fill in. No matter how much benefits both parties receive, it also
interrupts customers’ focus on purchasing and customers often abandon their checkout
process.
Therefore, registration should be
optionally provided at the end of the
checkout process when the sale has
been made and customers are now kind
of mentally ready to evaluate the
benefits of registration.
HIDDEN FEES: MISSING
Lack of accurate shipping rates or gift wrapping
fee makes customers confuse and might give
them a sense of non-transparency. This is
entirely contrast to customers’ desire to
complete the order all at one time.
You should show these fees on your checkout
process. Install plugins to calculate shipping
charges on your sites or use flat shipping rate
which is high enough to cover whatever you
need to ship.
NECESSARY INFORMATION: INCOMPLETE
Lack of necessary information takes
customers out of the checkout process which
results in two problems:
• Customers get confused about where they
are and loose the checkout page
• Customers get distracted and fail to fulfill
the process
So, you should:
• Show all of necessary information on
one checkout page
• Display added information or help on
floating windows or a pop-up window
• Offer a “return to shopping” link in
case customers want to buy
something else or “remove” link to
remove items in their carts.
AMBIGUOUS INFORMATION: TOO MUCH
Without any explanation, many form field labels can be ambiguous so it is hard for customers to
complete the checkout process and this increases the chance for customers to give up their
purchases.
Alleviate this problem by:
• Adding short descriptions and examples to form field labels
• Enhancing the descriptions with illustrations
• Providing drop-down box with available options.
