The Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9V Review

Point and shoot cameras are the bread and butter for most camera manufacturers. Whether youre a proud first-time parent looking to fill pages and pages of family scrapbooks, a social media buff or even semi-serious hobbyists looking to hone in on your art, a good point and shoot camera is the fail-safe way to go.The problem with these cameras is the hype that surrounds them. Some companies will sell on the pure number of mega pixels, on some new-fangled image processing engine or the number of clicks between battery charges. With all the choices out there, its almost impossible to choose. It comes equipped with a 16X optical zoom, HD capabilities and advanced features such as 3D image capabilities, linear auto focus and backlight correction. This unit is truly a testament to Sonys years of experience in the digital camera field.

The Sony DSC-HX9V is in a class of its own in the point and shoot camera market. There are no frills, awkward buttons or cumbersome controls. It lets you freeze lifes finest moments when you want it and how you want it.Image quality is no less than what youd expect from Sony. Its powered by one of its most advanced image engines, the Exmor R. If youre partying under the stars, the Sony DSC-HX9V will take each photo well, even in the dark. The flash is surprisingly understated and wont wash out too many details.Sonys Cybershot line has been one of the most user-friendly lines in recent years. And this years offering is no different. The interface is very intuitive and lets you select your options through the 3.0-inch touch screen that displays your stills with amazing clarity. When you upload these on your computer or your smart TV through the HDMI output, theres almost no distortion. The Sony DSC-HX9V comes with GPS that automatically tags your pictures and your current location. The background defocus function is also a welcome addition to the solid Face Detection feature. Unlike other brands, Sonys cameras focus on faces, not on shoulders or other uncomely body parts.

Even though the Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is a rather impressive offering by Sony, it is not without faults. First, theres the price. Perfection does come with a hefty price tag. However, once you get past the dent in your wallet, youll find that youve made the right call.Second is the video format. Admittedly, the videos are absolutely staggering. Other point and shoot cameras can only aspire at what the Cybershot line has been doing for years. But Sonys insistence on its patented file format has severely hampered its potential to change the way we make home videos. Sonys AVCHD can be a pain to edit except if youre running (surprise!) Sony Vegas, the companys proprietary nonlinear editing software.Another issue with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is its very elusive 3D mode. No matter how much adjusting and repositioning we did, the 3D effect never seems to show up, which we found a bit disappointing.
