HOW MUCH MOBILE AND TABLET USAGE HAS GROWN AND FUTURE USAGE

The speed of the mobile phone's technological development is scary, not so long ago sending a SMS was mind-blowing. Now we can directly speak to our smartphones and ask them for the lastest weather forecast, or take a HD video and upload it to the internet in a matter of seconds.

HOW SMARTPHONES AND TABLETS CHANGES WEB DESIGN CONCEPTS

A website needs to have larger buttons if it is going to function on a

smartphone and tablet – the simple reason being that people are now going to be using their fingers instead of mouse pointers which are much larger.

HOW SMARTPHONES AND TABLETS CHANGES WEB DESIGN CONCEPTS

The main difference in designing a usable experience for either platform is proportion. Navigation on a smartphone / tablet needs to be easier and bigger than on a PC… meaning designers must reach that “middle ground” (being large enough to easily navigate on a tablet, but not too big that it looks silly on a computer) or have a separate tablet-dedicated site that uses a different style sheet (and even a different layout) altogether. Tablets have completely changed the way web design is done.

WHAT CURRENT TECHNOLOGY CAN BE USED TO MAKE WEBSITES ACCESIBLE ON ALL DEVICES

Mobify, a website dedicated to making websites available on all devices allows you to create a mobile version of your website through an intuitive and user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI). Setup is a breeze, and you can have your very own mobile site in minutes.

If you run an e-commerce store, even better! Mobify has the Mobile Commerce platform that's geared specifically toward e-stores for the mobile web.

WHAT CURRENT TECHNOLOGY CAN BE USED TO MAKE WEBSITES ACCESIBLE ON ALL DEVICES

Companies such as Ford, Nokia and Reebok use Wirenode, a mobile website generator that has helped more than 50,000 websites create mobile-device-friendly versions of their sites.

Its free plan has a user-friendly editor for designing your mobile site, free hosting for up to three mobile sites, website statistics reporting, and more.

EXAMPLE OF A BAD MOBILE SITE

One of the biggest problems with the Major League Baseball site is that the theme for each team is exactly the same. Sure. The site changes the logo and teams colors, but there’s nothing else to differentiate between teams. And, that’s not even getting into the bland and dull vibe of the mobile site.

EXAMPLE OF A BAD MOBILE SITE

Brown Paper Tickets is an excellent site if you’re looking for some local entertainment. The only problem is that mobile users have difficulties being able to purchase tickets on the mobile site. That kind of defeats the purpose of having an e-commerce site.

EXAMPLE OF A GOOD MOBILE WEBSITE

 After doing some research,

I discovered the Google play website and found it to be one of the best HTML5 sites out there. http://play.google.com/about/music/tour/

Google uses HTML5 to showcase the many features of its Google Play streaming music service.

This website is one of the prime examples of how the integration of video, sound, and interactive graphics can be brought together with HTML5 to create an exciting and fun product promo that can

drive consumer usage. http://www.ebizmba.com/articles/best-html5-websites

EXAMPLE OF A GOOD MOBILE WEBSITE

If there is one mobile website that should be on the favorites list of every mobile device, it has to be Google. One part greatest search engine in the world, and one part custom home page for your smartphone, Google lets you choose to put stock quotes, movies, or weather on the page alongside of giving you great search capability.
