1. Design a new function--- item comparison

During the past 9 months working as a user experience designer at Taobao UED, I was responsible for enhancing and ensuring the using experience of Taobao App on all tablet devices (mainly on iPads), and participated in various kinds of projects by providing design solutions and helping in product strategy developments.

Above all, design with big-data thinking is the most learned part.

For example, learned to know which part of our application users love the most by calculating the amount of UV (unique visitor) and average time user spending on site; to know how users think about our products by viewing the customer feedbacks anytime as needed; to try to figure out how most users use our product by analysing users’ paths between pages, and then suggest a hypothesis to redesign products to meet users’ expectations.

Of course, as a UX designer with research abilities, trying to apply different methods and find the best way to under-stand users are also my responsibilities. Therefore, during this 10-month period of practically using both qualitative and quantitative research methods to do design, there are some projects and results to share with you:

Project at Taobao 1 Design a new function : 寶貝對比功能 / Item Commparison

ChoicesComparison

Decision-Making

Design Background :

Comparison is always existing during the process of buying a product; and it is no exception shopping on Taobao. The reason why people need comparisons is to help them make decisions. So it can be seen as a process instead of the end of the journey.

Yet, what’s difficult of this design is to know which part during the whole journey on Taobao HD users may need comparisons to help them make buying decisions. Besides, people use different strategies and care about different points while comparing among things, and the whole process is happening so privately that can only be known by themselves.

Hence, in order to understand more about the process, I referred some literature reviews and conducted some easy interviews to disclose what happened in the process as much as I can.

There are many factors influencing users’ choices. Although some of them are obvious, yet most of the factors are invisible and internal.

The proposed version-one comparison design concept

Design Process:

According to literature reviews, I found there is a factor called affect referral (Wright 1975) that influences users decision-making process. With being influ-enced by the factor, users may tend to make choices based on recalled affect towards brands and experiences in memory, bypassing reevaluation of the brands and comparison processes.

In addition to literature reviews, I also chatted with people who are users and recently having bought things from Taobao to understand how they choose products when there is already a desire or need to buy things. I found that the intention of choosing things from collected or bought shops is surprisingly high. That means, if people are told one of an item in comparison is from collected or bought shops, they are more likely to choose to buy that one.

Of course there are also other factors, such as which one has the higher cost-value ratio, which one can be shipped and received first, or which one has better customer reviews, users on Taobao would take into consideration while comparing and deciding which one to buy.

Hence, based on what I knew, the first version of comparison function was proposed.

Literature Review Interview with users

Second-version Design Proposal:

After the first-version design, we asked some users to use it as a prototype on iPad. From what they feedbacked us, we evaluated the helpness of our first design of this function. Although it can provide assistances while people are considering and choosing items, most of our users said it still lacks the detailed information which might be even more useful when making hard buying decisions.

Detail helps!

Prototype Testing

Therefore, we redesigned the function by splitting views into two which allowed users to view two objects; details page at the same time.

By adjusting and reorganizing information in the details page, the size and presentation form are changed from “page” to “card’. Which means, though users open two objects’ card to compare at one time, by simply closing one of them, one decision is made. And the comparison goes on, until final decision is made and something is bought in the end.

This continuous, iterative way of comparison works much better than the previous one, because a looks-like-hard and big comparing task is broken into small pieces of steps. And it makes users feel easiler to choose by providing them many chances to select, so they won’t be afraid of makeing decisions to buy.

two cards of item details can be operated seperately.

Comparison becomes simple by being broken down into small pieces:Selecting one out of two is much simpler than among many choices.

Content recommendation is always hard work.

Yet as a e-commerce platform built for detailors, shops owned by people who runs only small business are what mainly forms Taobao. Therefore, even though people came to Taobao are searching for items instead of shops, we still have responsibilities to help shops get more notices from users, and let users be aware that they can also find good shops with many items they may like or want in the shop. Project at Taobao 2 Redesign the shop recommendation system 1: Design Background重新設計- 發現我的好店

Design Background :

The most well-known way to do that is shop recommendation mechanism. However, it is always the difficult part to make what the system recommended fit right in users’ favor. So it needs to be customized which relies heavily on the backend computing and algorithms. But what’s more important, is what kind of data you are going to use, and how you use it.

Originally, shop categories in the old version used the very traditional way to cate-gorize shops. And the presenting way were very conservative as well (see Pic. 1).

In the new design of this whole project, we discussed with algorism team to make categories more humane and interesting, and more close to how people search for corresponding shops. Therefore we used the concept of “keywords” and groups of people (人群關鍵字) to re-categorize all shops on Taobao. As you can see in the picture 2, the new shop categories are becoming more attractive and intuitive for users to choose what they are interested. Besides, the “hot shop categories (line 1)” and “recommended shop categories (line 2)” are also provided to avoid the “Choice Overload” situations.

What’s more, as complements, by applying the same presenting style we kept and listed out all the shop collections promoted before (see Pic. 3). Then users may have more chances to find interested shops from various perspectives.

Descriptions for Picture 1, 2, 3:

Pad

As for now, the existing block presenting shops recommended by the system cannot effectively attack users to visit, not even mention making them stay on the pages.

To analysis reasons, we found that firstly, user can hardly feel the “customization” of shops recommended for them; secondly, though visiting those pages, users are still browsing by items instead of by shops, therefore users may leave, not go further into shops to discover more, soon if there is no item they like.

How we designed:

To reorganize information presented on the pages to let users feel “shops” more than items. To enhance backend algorithms with algorithm team to redefine categories of shops and users to bring them a more customized recommendation content.

1.

2.

Hence, we are going to redesign the existing pages of shops with two targets:

Pic. 4-1 The shop-collection content page. (old-version)

Pic. 4-2 The shop-collection content page. (new-version)

Descriptions for Picture 4 & 5

By comparing old and new versions, you can see obviously the differences. In the new version, we use “number” aligning with photos to indicate users that “there are still so many pieces of items you can see in the shop. Go take a look!. ” And by applying the numbers in each shop card, it’s more clear for user to notice that what they’ve seen are shops instead of item collections. This took effects and brought more visitors to go and stay in shops (please see the blue line in the chart blow).

As you can see, except the number of IPV-UV is decreasing, the other three factors for evaluating design resluts are increasing.

Which means we successfully led users to visit shops instead of item pages, and helped them find their interested shops. As a result, users are staying longer, buying more. This is beneficial for all the three parties: the users, the shoppers, and ourself-- the Taobao HD.

These are the old and new version of main page of personal customized shop recommendations. The user interations for “similar shops” listed differenty in the new version is for the purpose of not disturbing users’ attentions by too much page-jump when they are browing various kinds of shops.

Project at Taobao 3 Redesign the MyFavorite 1: Design Background and Analysis重新設計我的收藏夾

MyFavorite, a function through which users can collect their liked items every time when their spent time shopping or surfing online, and provides refer-ences or direct links when they are searching for needed items.

However, for now this function at Taobao HD doesn't well be provided. Some users even have never used this function. Instead, they are using shopping cart to temporarily collect their “maybe buy” items. Though by doing this way, users still have place to put their wanted items, yet this caused another problem that the capacity of shopping cart is always not enough, and then users start to ask for more capacity.

Therefore, we need to re-design MyFaverite.

By redesigning the function, we aimed to provide a more useful assistance to help user not only find the needed collected items easily, but also start their shopping journey even when they are just surfing on the App. We also hoped that through re-defining the Favorite function and refining user journey, the shop-ping experience on Taobao HD can be enhanced.

Despite of recording their sharings, I also asked questions according to what I’ve discovered from their folders. For example, as I found many users have similar items listed continuous in the folder, I asked them to recall the situation of adding those items into the favorite folder, and so on.

Design Background : Analysis:

The method I used for the analysis and design of MyFavorite is online contexual inquiry.

Firstly, I asked people around me who are Taobao members and had bought things on it before to show me their MyFavorite folders, and tell me about their experiences of using this function when they are shopping on Taobao.

After interviewing five users respectively, I applied KJ method to summarize the results.

And share with the user research results with other desingers when doing design proposal.

Shopping Cart

A temporary container for once-time, more continuous shopping journey until buying decision is made.

Before making buying decision: While facing buying decisions:

By analysis using interviews and KJ method, the definitions and contexts of using MyFavorite and Shopping cart are more well defined.

As Show above, the flow chart presents the most-happened process in Taobao’s user journeys. The level of likes, the inten-tion of processing to payment of items in Favirite and Shopping cart are different.

And since all these are clarified and well defined, the design of MyFavorite can therefore be conducted.

In the proposed design, an user may see items in groups presented by cards on the top of the page (the orange-line area). All the items in this area are from the user’s favorite folder.

The reason of designing this area is to help users find a way to start their journey for shop-ping. Even though users may have no purpose, they can still find something to start with.

Besides, this area also provides chances for marketing teams to promote items by seasons, holidays, events, or even personal factors.

Project at Taobao 4 Design for Ali-Group --- Redesign the Corporate Internal Social Networking system

The amount of employees is large in Alibaba Group, and the cross-de-partment cooperations and projects are frequently existing. Therefore, bringing social interactions and connections online to help people con-tact with each other easier and faster, is the original purpose of building the Ali-Nei-Wai system.

For now on the system, there are boards for new feeds and personal profile pages for all employees of Alibaba Group with a “Follow” button on it, however there are still seldom people using it.

Another faced problem is that, though there are many ways such as email, instant message, extension and cell phone number to easily con-tact with each other in the group, there is still too much time wasted on repeatedly communications and information synchronizations while doing projects. By analysis, we found that existing tools cannot satisfy what people need in cooperating projects; however, It is not because of the lack of communicating tools, but is because that the way and con-text of using those tools haven't been well defined.

Therefore, to solve these found problems and bring a better system, we started this project: Design for Ali-Group --- Redesign the Corporate Internal Social Networking system

It exists generally and normally in corporates. yet in Alibaba group, projects may be formed by menbers from different teams or departments. Therefore a highly flexible structure of groups of people was formed accordingly :

Traditional organizational structure

A flexible structure of group of people is formed temporary for supporting various kinds of projects.

Flat layout and organization. Information with layer concept

In the redesign of employees’ profile pages, we reorganized the information structure with layer concept. To make the first impression of a profile page stron-ger and similar to how we meet a person in real world, finding out what kind of elements are import-ant is the first step. Therefore, by interviewing people to talk about in what kind of situations they will open a person’s profile, we got the following three kinds of answers:

First view while open one’s profile page

Personal, working information and contacts are all on the same page. And there is no other differences except the editability between you and other people when viewing your profile page.

After reorganization, information is clearer and easiler to find. Besides, by seperating contents only profile owner can see from other pages, users won’t feel confused finding where to edit their profile anymore.

Once we knew users’ intentions, it’s much easiler to define which kinds of information are essential. In this stage, two project managers and a UX designer (me) conducted discussion workshops and invited other managers, programmers, or sometimes vitual designers to join and help us make decisions. Finally, we generated a demostra-tion.As long as we have demostration, an evaluation is needed to know if our proposal design fits users’ need. Until this stage, basically our first version of redesigning personal profile is done.

Two key points of profile page redesign

by building stronger social network connection among emplyees in Alibaba Group.

3. Redesign the Evaluation System and Mechanism:

Usually, performance evaluation happens every half a year in Alibaba Group. In other words, the official reviews of every employee may be conducted once in six months; however, during the period, there may have already many cycles of projects been finished so it is hard to recalled every details while evaluating. Therefore, breaking down the once-a-half-year evaluation into small pieces of reviews is bene-fitial to both employees and managers.

To bring the doing and evaluating into daily work, the evaluation system need to support employees to update their work anytime as they need, and to help managers to track and give feedback when there are projects conducted.

In order to redesign the orginal one into a better evaluation system, we firstly had some discussions with the team members who are mainly responsible for the design of evaluation system, and then interviewed some managers to understand what kind of information they may want to know about while leading a team and running a project. Besides, we also surveyed some emplyees to ensure that through this redesign, it will become easier to keep project manager updated anytime without spending too much time recalling and writ-ing reports.

Originaly, employees in Alibaba Group need to go to evaluation system to input anything they want to record about projects. These actions cost time and make people feel too serious; therefore, people use it only when being requested.

Through redesigning the evaluation mechanism, we add a card on the main page of Ali-Nei-Wai. In the card, every employee can input updates of projects they are participated in anytime easily. In addition, managers can instantly provide feedback and track the progresses of every project on hand.

With this design, we hope to not only enhance the evaluation mechanism, but also bring more inter-actions among project members. Because once the communication goes well, the working efficiency will increase.

As a teaching assistant of continui-ous two-year graduate courses--- the Digital Design of Creative Industries, I played as the role of a learner and a helper at the same time.

This job brought me lots of experiences by asking me to participate in the whole process of design, both as part of teammember and as a assistant to peovide help by side. Thanks to the training, I can do better and think broader in design practices now than others.

In every course, I had to make records and provide brief summaries to Smart Seed Union, an organization of NCKU funded by Ministry of Education of Taiwan with the purpose of encouraging cross-displine cooperations and creations. In addition, I also needed to arrange exhi-bitions as one of final presentations of projects conduct-ed by course attendees in suitable places. Besides, handing in reports and videos as future teaching materi-als are also my duties in the end of the courses

PART II : Master’s Thesis

Keywords:Spatial information, Cognitive map, Service Design,Interaction, User Interface

This thesis is conducted based on the discussions and applications of human cognition, spatial knowledge, and the sharable information. In my opinion, the spatial knowledge shouln’t be only provided byofficial way, but also can be shared by people who have experience living or having activities in the place.

Besides, information provided by others can be more interestingand sometimes helpful to people in different situations or contexts of users.

Therefore, by sharing this thesis with you, I want to show you thatwe have the same belief and want to do the same thing:

To let or to encourage everyone to share with others; and by sharing, we believe people from each side can both be benefit from it; and therefore in the end, form a beneficial sharing economy cycle.

NSC 101 ideastorming – Future Concept Development ProjectProject I: Living Well with Dementia

Dementia, as one kind of brain diseases that cause a long term and often gradual decrease in the ability to think and remember, is becom-ing more and more faced issue in this century while people are living longer than ever before. Therefore, the organizations, programs as well as services provided by either government or enterprises to take care of these elders are soon appearing in the market. However, though having different kinds of services provided, there is still lack of a holistic solution for helping no matter patients, or their families, nursing aides, living communities, or even hospital to get well prepared and deal with this issue in the long term.

Hence in our project, by interviewing related people and understand-ing their conditions, obstacles, and concerns in every stage when living with dementia, we applied the “bottom-up” method to consider all kind of needs of every role in different stages. We tried to integrate existing care services to design a better solution to satisfy both physical and mental needs of patients, and the needs of surrounding people.

Design Background

The Project :Living Well with Dementia participated at Young Designers' Exhibition (YODEX 2013)with posters and design concept videos presented during the 4-day exhibition held at Taipai World Trade Center.

Design Project 4 Mind the Gap International Workshop( NCKU x RCA )

"Mind the Gap is a collaborative project between 12 design students representing from Platform 17 of the Design Products course of the RCA in London and 29 students of 8 different departments from the NCKU in Tainan."

In the workshop, students form groups to discover things in Tainan, find issues, and provide solutions for Tainan main station (assigned design field)by cross-culture discussions and brainstormings. During the short five-day activities, after quick iterative design process: filed observation, discussion, prototyping, filed testing, revising…etc., we provide a concept of design— 府食吉事--- to solve the problem of carrying.

People who in the train station are either going home or going out. therefore train station could be seen as a “gap” between two places. However, during this not-that-long period the train station doesn’t provide good service to support people in this temporary “gap” place. For instance, there is very little place to put luggages except for the floor, yet putting luggages on the floor may influence the traffic and convenience in the station, especially during peak hours. Hence, our solution — 府食吉事--- is designed to solve the “carrying” problem in the train station.

府食吉事 applied the concept of one of the most famous factors of Tainan city, eating local & traditional Taiwanese food, and used frequently-seen spoons as design elements.

To make hospital lobby like a living room is not simple task but is important to either those people who visit hospital often or people who have had uncomfortable time and experience seeing a doctor. Through field observation and shadowing patients we first found out some problems, then by listing them out and discussing, we narrowed down to fewer critical issues which we all agreed that solving them will be most helpful to people according to what we’ve saw in the hospital. After deciding the issue we’d like to solve, personas and scenarios helped us much on brainstorming and forming design concepts. We generated as many scenario as we can, and gradually refined our design concept iteratively; during this most time consuming period, we did few presentations and idea sharing with two professors, asked feedback from classmates to get more close to how users really feel.Simultaneously, we also made effort on hardware issue: using Arduino, an open-source, single-board microcontroller, to connect input with output to create a suitable designed effect which fits right well into the context. Lastly, we also conducted a simple usability test to evaluate the result of our design, which may bring completeness in this design project.

Design Project 6 Acer Incredible Green Contest 2012Crowdsourcing Recycle System

Design ConceptSince the idea of green life rises, proper recycle process lives in common’s life. However, though people are willing to do recycle, due to the complex layers of package, people may get lost in recycle procedure in facing complex material. The cause of lost track in recycle is from unfamiliar of knowledge of recycle pro-cedure, and unknown destination to retrieve data of recycles procedure. Therefore, we engage with online business simulation game. In the game, users become a lord to run recycle in their own property. And through the gaming pro-cess, the role would gain and experience and level as feedback. We sincerely hope that people learn their recycle knowledge in the game, thus it proves the game affects users’ habits in real life. Moreover, the experience of doing recycle in the game would submit to Crowdsourcing Data on the cloud. This database provides not only online instant research of recycle knowledge, but also a knowl-edge center where users can retrieve unknown recycle material information of garbage by simply taking photo to it.

Every design starts from finding problems.Though problems are everywhere in our daily life, they still means differently to different persons. Besides, there’s no one solution can solve all problems, not even to say that a solution can fit well all situations. Therefore, how to find out a problem which is meaningful to people is the first thing we need to do.Since this is a contest which encourages students to “create green-centric applications to generate innovative and sustainable solutions,” we focused on the recycle issue which has great influences on our environment in our everyday life.

How we find out problems: By observing people’s recycling behavior in public areas and having interviews with people in different cases, we finally came out with the solution as a system combining games and ICT tech-nology, and at the same time using the power of the crowd to provide people not only the knowledge about recycling but also the awareness of caring for a green environment.

PART IV : Activities

2. Happy UX 2013

1. 2012 UX Summit Taiwan

I worked as a student majored in UX design with many other student volunteers to provide helps before and during the day of summit(29-Nov, 2012).

Take Responsibility of reception as well as reporters for invited speakers, James Wu, Sr. Director, Product Design & Experience at Kobo Inc.

In the two-day event, I joined as a UX master student one discus-sion group and two workshops to learn from speakers and other participants.

Among all sessions, the workshop---workshop #5: Design Studio using structured creativity for product innovation--- imspired me the most. This workshop run as a design studio to train on developing con-cepts by brainstorming and expressing your ideas through quick sketches, story boards, and presentations.Situation based problem solving:

3. 2013 UX Hong Kong

Our assigned situation was “How to solve the communication issue between departments when cooperating a cross-discipline project?” There were story and background described on a given A4 paper, and we only had 5 minutes to read the content. After that, every group started brainstorming on conducting as many elements from 4C(Component, Chal-lenge, Characters, Characteristics) aspects as possible.

Once the brainstorming was done, people were moving quickly around to interview others on the results and exchange opinions.Following by those conducted elements, we chose one aspect (challenge) to develop ideas. Comic storyboard was used to present concepts. Finally we generated many solutions including what kind of service will be provided, how the process will be run, how the interface looks like and how information architecture of system be built.
