Elizabeth B. Fine

Few people have had as long and dedicated a career as Mrs. Elizabeth B. Fine. For many years, first at Miss Fine’s School, which her late husband’s aunt founded, then at Princeton Day, she has drawn her students into the world of classical literature with her extraordinary enthu s ia sm for teach ing . M rs. F in e ’s style is unique: never does she u tter a stern word, never a rebuke which might dim some student’s interest in ancient writings. She assumes her pupils have the same enthusiasm she does and, by doing so, transm its her rich sense of the classical world to them. Outside the classroom, she is every bit as pleasant as inside, from her piping “ Toot, toot!” as she moves through crowded halls with her ever-present cart to the smiles she showers on passers-by. The only quality of Mrs. Fine which surpasses her cheer is her skill with her subject m atter; she reads Greek faster than most people can read English. Through her enlightening classical teaching and her effervescence, Mrs. Fine has m ade an impact on Princeton Day School tha t will never be forgotten.

T hank you, Mrs. Fine, for bringing alive Achilles and Xenophon and all the souls in between. Thanks to you, Latin and Greek will never be dead lang uag es for your s tuden ts and colleagues.

Dear Class of 1988,Although the school year has only progressed to the Thanksgiving recess, your class has

already shaped its footprint for the year. By the time you graduate, we should have a clear depiction of the outline tha t will constitute your senior year at PDS.

To date, you have made a fine com m itm ent to your academic responsibilities; you have dem onstrated a tenacious, positive spirit in your athletic endeavors; you have provided us moments of high dram a and creativity on Halloween; you have pursued your Com m unity Council duties with vigor and vision; and you have displayed a delightful sense of humor. More is to come, I am sure.

For now, let me say how much I appreciate your contributions to the positive tone and direction of the school year. M any colleges and universities will be pleased to have you on their campuses. You will be missed here, but I know you will return to share your future experiences with us.

Good Luck.Sincerely

Headmaster Duncan W. Ailing

W e’ve taken out this space in The Link To brag and boast and puff in ink About a grad of '88 Whose exploits we consider great (W e ll... most of them, at any rate).

No doubt this grad would die from shame At all this mushy praise from us.W e shan't, therefore, reveal his name;He will remain anonymous,Seen only via indirection,Through the light (there's no light clearer) Cast back by the bright reflection of WOJZIM HHOl before a mirror.

We've read you in The Spokesman reporting your scoop.

W e’ve watched you, in fencing, turn foes to Swiss Cheese.

We've heard you perform, with your thrash music group,

In keys sure to pleasefans of the Dead Kennedys.

We've seen you mature from a neophyte reader

To a literate, lively, and peerless Peer Leader.

You've done all the work in your schooling career;

W e get the fun:we take the credit, and cheer.

So here we are, your family, gaga As your Princeton Day School saga Comes at last to termination In honors-laden graduation

To a totally tubular max, way-rad grad,From Toby, Denise, Big Bro, Mom, and Dad.

Our young scholar in pre-Mac days.

If you love somebody, set them free.

We’re proud of you, Greg! love,

Helene,

Well, the good times a re over; tha t means bet te r times can begin. O f course, being in college, you’ll have to take things seriously. T h a t ’s good because you should get all the “ seriously” out of your system so you can really enjoy yourself.

Y ou are now prepared to get a good education which hopefully will m ake you sm ar t enough to know tha t you never needed it in the first place. But a t least you will know tha t when faced with the choice of funding the development of a small country of educating their child, your parents were loyal to you.

H ave a nice day,

Dearest Landis:

’So one day the little raccoon looked up at his mother and said, “See here, my big warm mother, can I go now — out into the woods to see the night?”

And his mother, who knew that her child was wise and wonderful said, “off you go, for . . .

the moon is full.”

Congratulations to you for who you are and for what you have achieved. I love you.

Dear Melissa,I have your picture, when you were less than one year old, fram ed and hanging on my

bedroom wall to remind me of the m any bounties of life I have and treasure. Foremost among them is my eldest grandchild, you. W e planned to have our children early in order tha t we m ight grow up with them, but failed to have the foresight to recognize tha t benefit would extend to our grandchildren as well.

The memories I cherish of your growing-up years and my participation in them are my proudest possession . . . You, at six years old, and me sailing abroad Replique and visiting various parts together . . . You, Peter and I sharing sailing experiences as we cruised Long Island Sound and the adjacent islands to g e th e r . . . O ur philosophical discussions in the cockpit under the stars while at anchor at night; watching your growth and m aturity as you emerged into a full-blown woman. Deja Vu, it was as if I was reliving your M other’s similar period of life.

M y greatest pleasure to this day is to observe with satisfaction the wonderful relationships each of you in the family have with one another. Your M om is one of the greatest women I know, and observing how well You, your brother and sister em ulate her many favorable a ttriubtes is a never-ending source of joy.

M ay this milestone m ark one of many waypoints you will pass on your journey through life. Cherish it, enjoy it, live it and love it — but remember, it is but one point of reference on your voyage. M ay you ever enjoy fair winds and m oderate seas and the legacy of your heritage.
