Dear Friends,
l
l
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
As we launch our 39th season we realize that our world is not the same as it once was soon after the year 2020 began. Together we have faced the immediate changes to our lives caused by a global pandemic. We have witnessed the unrest and tension in our society as we have been tested to confront racism and intolerance. Both of which being played out before us within a backdrop featuring the divisive politics of a national election. It has been a trying time that has impacted us all.
In our small way we hope to serve as a home to the voices and creative expression of our young people, as well as a place of safety and comfort for all as we continue this journey together. The arts can be a home that brings us together as we celebrate the stories and tales we have shared for generations, as well as introducing new cultures, ideas and thoughts to our young people. The Growing Stage will feature works that celebrate diverse art forms and we will utilize the power of art to open discussion, touch hearts, and question accepted notions. TGS is committed to honoring imagination and infusing its power for growth for all of us.
We open a season in a much different style than in years past. Safety and hygiene are now emphasized as much as our dedication to high performance and production values. As we look to the immediate future we plan to create and present works this season on both the physical and virtual stage. The challenge is before us. Thankfully we are surrounded by performing and teaching artists that remain inspired to engage, educate and entertain our young patrons.
Our performance today is an example of what will follow throughout our 2020/2021 season. We share a classic fable told to generations with a new twist. Two actors playing all the roles for a tale that would generally need at least ten performing artists, plus a live musician to help us weave the mystery, fun and intrigue as we travel from gloomy castle to dark woods to a little cottage in the glen.
We are grateful that you and your family are taking this journey with us today, and we look forward to what comes beyond as we continue together throughout this season!
Best wishes,
Steve FredericksStephen L. Fredericks, Founder & Executive Director

The Historic Palace TheatreThe Historic Palace Theatre, built in 1919, was an entertainment landmark in northwest New Jersey for over 50 years. Commencing as a silent movie and vaudeville house, it later featured talking movies, local high school plays and graduations, minstrel shows and other live entertainment.
In 1934, the Palace was leased by a prominent operator of theatres, and a period of major renovation began. The interior was stylishly redecorated in 1934, employing fabric wall covering and ceiling draperies. A marquee was added, and the Colonial Revival facade was covered by an Art deco style front in 1938.
In the mid-1930s, the Hopatcong Broadway Players, comprised of nation-ally known actors, directors and writers, tried out theatrical productions at the Palace before taking them onto Broadway. Bert Lytell, Celeste Holm and Gale Sondergaard were among the actors who appeared on the Palace stage. Newly released movies appeared at the Theatre over the next two decades.
During the mid-1940s, the storefronts in the Palace's facade were removed and the theatre continued as a movie house into the 1970s. It fell on hard times as competition from television and multiplex theatres led to a decline in patronage. It was unoccupied until 1981 when the venerable old theatre was converted into a warehouse for a moving company, a purpose it served until 1994.
In May 1995, The Growing Stage purchased the Palace and began to restore it to its original purpose as a performing arts center. After raising and investing over $2 million dollars, the organization has succeeded in having the historic Palace Theatre placed on the National, State, and Morris County Registers of Historic Places.
Our MissionThe Growing Stage -The Children's Theatre of New Jersey's mission is to nurture the development of the performing arts
through education and to create, produce and perform works that engage the entire family. Through Main Stage productions,
school day matinees, touring performances, classes for all ages and a variety of special initiatives, we provide unprecedented access to the arts for New Jersey children and their families.
As a 501(c)-3, not-for-profit professional performing arts company, The Growing Stage actively seeks outside sources of
funding. Contributions from corporations, foundations and individuals help to defray the costs of our programming and allow us to keep tickets and tuition well priced for families.
