One of us editors’ favourite pastime is tocompare how our competitors capture thefront page headline.

Suffice to say The BEAT was shortlistedin the Forum for Community Journalists’best headline-writing category, for titlessuch as “hurling handbags at poverty”,which formed part of the entry profile.

Another headline in the broader profilewas the one which declared: “MorrisMaluleka gallops into the sunset”, at thetime the former Bela-Bela municipalmanager was headed for the North Westtown of Brits.

As recent as last Sunday, 19 August, Iwas personally thrilled by a brilliantheadline on the front page of the CityPress.

The headline went with different fontswhich declared “Cyril Ramaphosa faces …FIGHTBACK!”

The latter is the kind of headline whichfires the imagination of a curious reader.

But wait until the Sunday Timesunleashes its front page designers andeditors, who went for broke on “Zondowants Zuma to answer”.

This headline was published against thebackdrop of the anticipated first days ofthe Judicial Commission of Inquiry intoState capture, chaired by Deputy ChiefJustice Raymond Zondo.

Who would not want to know if theformer president would be hauled over thecoals or not?

We at The BEAT went somewhat lightwith the headline “Lure of Waterberg”,based on the endless visits of showbizcelebs to our neck of the woods.

At the same time, colleague CarinaBester dropped me some statistics withregards to the sales of The BEAT at outletssuch the grocery stores and fuel stations.

An interesting aspect is that our headlinewhich declared “Passage to manhood”apparently attracted the attention of non-traditional readers at supermarkets, meaning there is a growing pool of whitepeople who from time to time pick up acopy of The BEAT.

The latter newspaper was sold out at noless three such outlets.

Talking about striking front pages, theworld’s most influential New York Timesonce carried a picture of the sprawlingsqualor of the settlement of Winterveldtoutside Pretoria, with the headline “PeopleLive Here!”The late Percy Qoboza, editor at the

defunct Weekend World, attracted a furiousbacklash when he published a headlinescreaming “Mandela Released”, at the timeMadiba was incarcerated on Robben Island. What Bra Percy meant was that Winnie

Mandela (not Madiba!) had been releasedfrom detention without trial.I can’t remember if Bra Percy did roll over

and apologise, but many readers were upsetabout the whole thing. When I was employed at the Pretoria

bureau of a news agency, I laughed untiltears rolled down my cheeks when thePretoria News carried the most sensationalheadline, following an abortive coup in thehomeland of Bophuthatswana.“Coup outside city!” declared the Pretoria-

based daily broadsheet. Oh, give me abreak! At the time of writing this letter, we had

already met for our pre-planned pre-publication conference, and assure you tolook forward to another good read.
