ANNUAL REPORT 2017

FUEL HER FIRE,AND SHE WILL CHANGE THE WORLD.

Girls Inc. of Orange County

We believe ALL GIRLS DESERVE TO REALIZE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL…and, in order to do that, girls need to have the STRENGTH and RESILIENCE to follow their own path, explore many options, TRY and sometimes FAIL.

In 2017, Girls Inc. of Orange County transitioned largely to site based programming for the simple reason that we need to “go to where the girls are”. From elementary schools to universities, we are delivering our impactful programs that change the trajectory of the lives of girls, their families and the community for the better.

Our results and our stories here are but small examples of our work….our partnerships with schools, extensive volunteer contributions, committed board of directors and generosity of our donors fuels OUR fire to serve more girls, more deeply. We reached over 4,000 girls across the county in 2017, and have developed plans to expand a number of programs in the coming years. Please join us as we change the world, one girl at a time.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR 2018 LEADERSHIP

2017 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Trained staff and volunteers build lasting, mentoring relationships in girls-only spaces that are physically and emotionally safe and where girls find a sisterhood of support with shared drive, mutual respect, and high expectations. Hands-on, research-informed programs provide girls with the skills and knowledge to set goals, overcome obstacles, and improve academic performance.

THE GIRLS INC. EXPERIENCE

“Girls Inc. girls stand up for their beliefs. 83% do what they believe is right, even if their friends make

fun of them.”

Every day, in communities across the U.S., girls encounter significant obstacles to their well-being and success.

• 1 in 5 girls in the U.S. lives in poverty

• 1 in 6 U.S. girls will not finish high school

• 1 in 10 U.S. high school girls has experienced physical dating violence

Girls Inc. meets these challenges by helping girls explore and celebrate their

strengths, their voices, who they are today, and who they will become.

Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Our comprehensive approach to whole girl development

equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers and grow up healthy,

educated, and independent.

These positive outcomes are achieved through three core elements embedded in

a high quality Girls Inc. Experience: people, an environment, and

programming that, together, empower girls to succeed.

Mission - Girls Inc. of Orange County inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.

Vision - Empowered Girls in an Equitable Society

For 64 years, Girls Inc. has been there for girls helping them to say “I can” instead of “I can’t” and teaching them to respect themselves, and believe that

they are capable of great things.

At Girls Inc., a girl can start her journey in elementary school and be guided all the way to and through college. In 2017, over 4,000 girls, ages 5 to 18, participated in

Girls Inc. programs at 53 outreach locations throughout Orange County.

From kindergarten to college, Girls Inc. prepares girls with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to become strong (healthy), smart (educated), and bold

(independent) women.

We believe that every girl deserves to realize her full potential.

At Girls Inc., we help her develop the confidence, strength, and resilience to overcome any challenge, pursue higher education and any career she chooses.

Girls Inc. girls are invested in theireducation and 95% say they

care about doing well in school

GIRLS MEAN BUSINESS!Girls 9-11 years old start their own businesses at the YESS Entrepreneurship Academy. Every girl should know she can be her own boss and how many different careers there are!

Girls Inc. relocated its 20-year YESS Entrepreneurship Academy to Chapman University to enforce that college can be in the future for every girl!

My mom never knew how we were going to pay the rent, so each month we were one month closer to being evicted. I felt helpless at an early age because there wasn’t much my older brother and I could do to help except go to school and get good grades. My college dreams, just like me, remained small and any efforts towards applying would fall on me. College was never discussed. Where our next meal would come from was always more important. My mom sacrificed much of her life for my brother and I, and she is the only support I’ve ever had in my life.

MEET EMILY!

The facilitator encouraged me to create a college poster of where I wanted to go and what I wanted to study in my future. I was clueless as to the types of colleges and degrees available but I knew I wanted to do something with animals. Watching my mom struggle motivated me to work toward college and a degree in Veterinary Medicine.

Once my dream board was made, college was achievable. I was exposed to a variety of ways to pay for college, which was exciting because I assumed that college was too expensive. My involvement at Girls Inc. gave me and my family hope for a stronger, smarter, and bolder future. My mom’s struggles and commitment to make my life better has given me the strength to overcome earlier obstacles and has changed the trajectory of my path forever. I now have the tools to lead and live a life filled with power, freedom and possibility.

My college aspirations became a reality once I stepped into the Girls Inc. College Bound Program.

In 2017, Emily was awarded a $20,000 scholarship from Girls Inc. National. Emily is thriving in her first year at

Oregon State University.

In 2017, Girls Inc. girls were awarded
