0.1 This Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by theIndian Standards Institution on 17 August 1973, after the draft finalizedby the Oils and Oilseeds Sectional Committee had been approved by theChemical Division Council and the Ag-ricultural and Food Products])ivision Council.

0.2 Linseed oil is used in th» ruanufact ure of varnishes, paints, putty, oilcloth, facrice, linoleum, printing inks, artificial rubber, tracing cloth, andpatent leather. It is applied to paper and fahrics to render them waterproof and tough. Certain grades of the oil are also used fill" edihle andpharrnaccuticnl purposes.

0.3 This standard was first published in 1950 and then revised in 1967 byamalgamating lS:76-1950·, IS:55B-1954t and IS:3·174-1966~. In thesecond revision the Iirnit for iodine value is being changed from 175 Min to170 Min in view of the data available and the experience gained. Thischange brings this requirement in line with the provisions of thePrevention of Food Adulterat ion Act, 1952 of the Government of India.

0.4 The pharrnaccurical grade of linseed oil is covered in Pharmacopoeiaof India ('The Indian Pharrnacopoeia ). The Raw Grade 2, specifiedin this standard, corresponds to this grade. The boiled and pale-boiledtypes of linseed oils are covorr-d in IS: i7-1 ~68§.

0.5 For the purpose of deriding whether a particular requirement ofthis standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculatedexpressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS: 2-1 ~160!l. The numbe-r of significant places retainedin the rounded off value should he the same as that of the specifiedvalue in this standard. '
