History or Background of the Village

Kampung Kok Seraya, also name as Kampung Induk is a small village located in

Kelantan. Kampung Kok Seraya obtained its name based on the type of plant which

already exist and the plants are widely grow in the area before Kampung Kok Seraya is

found, therefore the first batch of the villagers decided to use the name of the plant as the

name of the village.

Based on the geographical coordinates, Kampung Kok Seraya is located at 6º 10' 0"

North, 102º 10' 0" East which considered as a part of Tumpat, and the village`s postcode

is 16210. The headman in charge for the village is a man name Beng Khieu A/L Eh Sim

who is also the one willing to provide information and guide us throughout the survey for

Kampung Kok Seraya.

Kampung Kok Seraya was established 400 years ago where it is originally filled with

water and is one of the route linked to Sungai Kelantan for ship to pass in and out. After

that it become a lake where most of the villagers play and fish as their hobby. Besides that,

the villagers love planting and farming for their daily consumption which may help them

save some money.

The most famous figure for Kampung Kok Seraya is Wat Wanaram Kok Seraya

which is a Buddhist temple. Wat Wanaram Kok Seraya started renovation from 1982

and is currently still expanding, and majority of the population are Buddhist.

According to the headman, there is no information on the population of the village

during the establishment of Kampung Kok Seraya, but he said that the first batch of

villagers were from Kampung Tradisi.

After Mr Beng Khieu A/L Eh Sim took over the position of headman, he applied for

road or street to bring convenience to the villagers and prevent trouble to drive along the

road when there are cars coming from the other direction since the roads are too small.

The headman also apply for more drains since Kelantan has encountered the greatest

flood in year 2014. The headman did these application through Malaysian Chinese

Association (MCA) channel because he is the committee member of MCA for the Tumpat

segment.

Besides that, Mr Beng Khieu also take consideration about the disabled people

(OKU), by applying financial aid for them. The headman also apply for house repairing

fee which will be cost RM10,000 and 3 houses are accepted. Some of the houses look

very old and unable to protect them from a heavy rain, therefore the headman stood up to

help them.

In the other hand, there are a lots of cracked road in Kampung Kok Seraya which

vehicles can hardly drive across the road and some will spoiled their car`s tire. The

headman therefore apply for the road repairing through the Land Administration Malaysia.

The application is accepted and the roads are repaired.

Population, Housing, Transportation

There is no distinct pattern in Kampung Kok Seraya and their land are mostly cover

with tar road, therefore there will be more transportation such as motorcycle, bicycle, car

and other vehicle that moves on road. However the roads are small, therefore a car from

the opposite direction will have some difficulties to drive along the road and the drivers

have to be courteous to each other.

The nearest city to Kampung Kok Seraya is Kota Bharu, which is the main city in

Kelantan which is 12km away from Kampung Kok Seraya and takes about 20 minutes to

arrive at Kota Bharu. Some of the villagers which stay deep inside compare to other need

to consume more time. Therefore in order to help these villagers, the headman already

apply for more road in Kampung Kok Seraya to allow these to have faster route to Kota

Bharu.

Based on the information given by the headman, there are 165 of households and a

total of 660 population in current record. The number of male are 264 and the number of

female are 396 in Kampung Kok Seraya. Kampung Kok Seraya consists of two ethnic

groups which are Siam and Chinese, but most of the population are Chinese. The religion

of villagers in Kampung Kok Seraya are Buddhist therefore the Wat Waranam Kok

Seraya will become very crowded when there is Buddhist festival.

There are also local organizations in Kampung Kok Seraya. For their association,

they have a society name “Persatuan Siam Tumpat”. Kampung Kok Seraya also have

their farmer group, which is “Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan Bunga Raya” and “Kadar

Agency”. They have a well-known Chinese temple which is the Wat Waranam Kok

Seraya and most of the individuals get to know Kampung Kok Seraya is due to their Wat

Waranam Kok Seraya. The parties in charge for Kampung Kok Seraya is Parti Islam

Se-Malaysia (PAS). The village has its maintain population over the past 10 years which

are the teenagers occupy about 40% of the population while senior citizen occupy about

10% of the population.

Kampung Kok Seraya acquire their water mostly from Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR)

where 80% of the household use this source to obtain their water, while 20% of

household obtain their water from the well. They also use the same sources of water for

washing. Their electric supply also same as other large cities which is Tenaga Nasional

Berhad (TNB). The method for their waste disposal is to gather waste at a place intended

for Majlis Perbandaran Kota Bharu (MPKB) to collect the waste for disposal, while the

method for sewage disposal is by flush. In the other hand, the method for their

telecommunication are land line and mobile phone.

There are no medical service nor security service in Kampung Kok Seraya. To seek

for medical attention, they need to head to Chabang Empat which the nearest village to

them. To make a police report, they also need to head to Chabang Empat where the police

station is located. There are no other facilities in Kampung Kok Seraya, but based on the

information provided by the headman, he is applying to build a Community Hall inside

the village.

Besides that, there are no convenience store or market inside the Kampung Kok

Seraya, therefore when the villagers need to go for shops, they need to head to the Wet

Market also located in Chabang Empat. Chabang Empat is considered as a savior for

Kampung Kok Seraya.

Currently, there are only cottages in the village, therefore the headman plans to build

a community hall for events and have sport games such as badminton and futsal. This will

help teenagers lead a healthy lifestyle and have healthy entertainment instead of smoking,

taking drugs, and drifting.

Road in Kampung Kok Seraya

Economic Activities

There are several ways where the villagers of Kampung Kok Seraya earn their

income, which are farming, plantation, and industrial. The main crop for the plantation in

Kampung Kok Seraya are long beans, cucumber, and chili. These vegetables are usually

used for sales to earn their income rather than for their personal consumption. There is a

rice factory in Kampung Kok Seraya where some of the villagers earn their income by

working in the rice factory.

Most of the household have at least a 2 acres of vegetable garden for their own

consumption and vegetable is considered as a main food in Kampung Kok Seraya. Each

household of Kampung Kok Seraya may only purchase 1 chicken a week from the

butcher in Kampung Kok Seraya for their daily consumption, because they lack of

chicken for the entire household. If any household want to get an extra chicken, they have

to head to the Wet Market in Chabang Empat. The cooking method of the household in

Kampung Kok Seraya is just the same as the household in the city which is using cooking

gas.

There are few ways for villagers in Kampung Kok Seraya to earn their income. The

main source of income in Kampung Kok Seraya is plantation. According to the

information provided by the headman, 50% of the villagers earn their income from

plantation, while 40% of the villagers have private business, and other 10% are working

for government.

Among all of the vegetables, the plantation number of long bean is the most as long

beans mature rapidly. Long bean is considered as the most production and the main

vegetable in Kampung Kok Seraya. Long beans prefer warm summers for maximum

production, however in Malaysia, sometimes the weather will become extremely hot

where the long beans are unable to produce well and cause the villagers who depend on

plantation of long beans face a hard time. Long beans are consider as climbing bean

varieties, therefore the farmers have to plant them along the fence or give them a trellis or

poles to climb up. Because of the long beans is able to grow faster than other vegetables,

the farmers need to harvest them daily .

There are no wild animals that will harm the crops in Kampung Kok Seraya, however

the weather will still bring harm to the crops. Due to the dry season in Malaysia, water

are depletes in the faster rate and it starts to decline. This is the worst season for farmer to

earn an income for their living. When this season approach, the villagers will start to save

their money in order to go on with their living and some of them will find some side job

for extra income.

Besides that, the uncertainty of incoming flood will not only harm but destroy all the

crops. Most of the house also destroyed by the flood in year 2014. In order to protect the

crops and the housing area of the villagers, the headman applied for more drains to let the

flood water flow along the drain in case there is another wave of flood coming which is

unforeseen.

Due to the difficulty of obtaining input for the agriculture of the farmers, the

headman decided to ask help from the Institution of Kemajuan Pertanian Kemubu

(KADA). The headman registered for 15 rigid farmers with the Institution of Kemajuan

Pertanian Kemubu (KADA) to ease the farmers to obtain input for their agriculture. This

helped farmers as it is easier and increases the outcome for their crops and thus increasing

the income.

The villagers in Kampung Kok Seraya are using the traditional way which since their

ancestor`s time to harvest their crops. Since now is a modern era, there are few ways to

boost up their output that should be taught to them. Therefore the headman said that he is

still working on finding agencies which is willing to give a hand on the ways to

modernize the agriculture in Kampung Kok Seraya instead of using traditional ways.

Social, Culture & Religious Practice

Kampung Kok Seraya is a small village that consist of 428 villagers, where 40% of

them are male, and 60% of them are female. Among these population, there are total 165

number of household in this area and they can be categorized into two different ethnic

groups which is Chinese and Siamese. According to the research made by the headman,

we can clearly know that 30% of them are Chinese and 70% of them are Siamese and the

most widely spoken language in this village is Hokkien and Kelantanese-Malay.

Moreover, the research also stated that the population of Kampung Kok Seraya were

maintained at the same level as compared over the past 10 years, the report also shows

that there are 40% of the residents are teenagers, while 10% of them are senior citizens.

Village Report done by the Headman of Kampung Kok Seraya

Languages spoken in Kampung Kok Seraya is Hokkien, Mandarin, and Malay.

Although the residents in the village speak in Hokkien, Malay or Mandarin, it is obvious

that the pronunciation of Hokkien and Malay in Kelantan are very different from us and it

is hard for us to understand what they mean as there is a heavy accent in their words.

They will either change the pronunciation for the word or use a Kelantan word to replace

the original word. Let us make an example by the name of the city – Kelantan. They

pronounce Kelantan as “Kelate” in Malay this is an example where they only change the

pronunciation and we can still relate it easily, however, some of words they actually

replace the original word with Kelantan words, for example:

Bahasa Malaysia Bahasa Kelantan

Change in pronunciation

Kelantan Kelate

Sayang Saye

Apa Gapo

Dua Duo

Change in

word

Cakap Kecek

Dia Demo

Saya Kawe

Teman Wanita Gewe

Tak Mau Tokse

Besides, the Hokkien from the residents are having a heavy Malay accent as well, where

they will include “-kah, -nya, -bah, -doh” in their Hokkien, which it will make us

(non-Kelantanese) to be confused or not understand their Hokkien.

Although there are two categories of ethnic in this village, both of them are under a

same religion which is the Buddhism. There is an association in this village which named

as Persatuan Siam Tumpat. This association is organized by the Headman of Kampung

Kok Seraya for the purpose to spread the traditional culture of siam dancing – Panggung

Menora. They have a special instructor from Thailand, Pak Chum a/l Chadi, who is

willingly to train the teenagers in Kampung Kok Seraya for this traditional dance. They

achieved the 1st place in traditional dancing competition and they will be on tour to

perform aboard at Paris, French in June 2016. This is a great honor to the residents in the

village and a proof of success for the Headman in Kampung Kok Seraya.

Training place for Panggung Menora.

The trainer’s, Pak Chum a/l Chadi, house is just located beside the training area.

Besides the Siamese dance, they also practice most of the Buddhist culture such as

the Chinese temple named as Wat Wanaram Kok Seraya which is built before 1980s and

started their first renovation and expansion in 1982. Wat Wanaram is a place for the

residents of Kampung Kok Seraya to have their event or gathering here due to the fact

that they do not have a hall or field in their village. The Buddhist in this village behave

more likely towards Thailand culture. For example, the prayer will said “Namotasak”

instead of “Amitabha” and the building of the temple is actually more similar to the

building in Thailand. Besides the Chinese temple, they are also having a crematory in

their own village which located towards the side of the village, this is the place where

they can cremate the body of a dead person and place the cremains or ashes in the nearest

columbarium.

moderator. (c) The main hall of the temple, where all the event will be held here.

Last but not least, the food in Kok Seraya. We found Khao Jam, Budu, Ulam,

Keropok Lekor and lots of kuih-muih in Kampung Kok Seraya, even these food is

common in Kelantan, but this is also a culture in the village, where they will normally

consume these foods as their breakfast and as we observed these foods actually come

with a little bit Malay style as the flavor is spicy and the Tom Yam Soup in the village

tasted exactly same as those in Thailand, this is because they can easily get the similar

ingredient here as the Thailand Tom Yam’s recipe. Ulam, is steamed vegetable, such as

ladyfinger, eggplant, long bean and fresh cucumber, that will be served together with

Budu sauce; Khao Jam, is similar with Nasi Kerabu. The main difference is that they

added the Budu sauce into the Khao Jam and the rice is green in color instead of blue, this

is because the use the Khao Jam leaves instead of the blue flower which is used in Nasi

Kerabu.

“Khao Jam” specialty food in Kelantan.

After surveying with the Headman of Kampung Kok Seraya, we get to know that

there is an association in the village which is Persatuan Siam Tumpat. This is the

association that organize the traditional dancing in the village including Panggung

Menora and also they are teaching the children in the village Thai language without

charging them. Besides, they will also sponsor the temple in Kok Seraya for renovation

and expansion. Moreover, when there is an event held in the temple they will provide

them with the public address (PA) system and performances. Other than association, there

is also a farmer group, Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan (PPK) Bunga Raya (they called

them as kadar agency), in the village their main economic activity is agriculture activity.

This group is form with the objective to increase the economic and social level, provide

new farming knowledge and technology to the residents and increase the crop production

and income of the farmer in order to increase their welfare. Moreover, the political status

in Kampung Kok Seraya is consider stable and the parties handling this village is

Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS).

Tourism Value

From the observation we got from Kampung Kok Seraya, we found out that nature is

one of the attractions in Kampung Kok Seraya. We can see a lot of farming area in the

village and the scenery is delightful, therefore this is one of the reason Kampung Kok

Seraya could attract more tourist to visit to their village and enjoy the process of farming.

The main crops that harvest in this village is long bean and the farming area is consider

moderate in their village, where it is enough for the residents to take it as their main

economic activity, also it can be an attractive tourist place.

Private owned long bean farm.

Besides, the Chinese temple is also another tourism value for the village. The statue

of Guang Yin in Wat Wanaram will attract a lot of devotees to visit and pray to grant

their wishes and seek for advice from their God. Other than that, some of the local

resident will travel to Wat Waranam to snap photo of the temple during event day and

also they will recommend this temple to other tourist that are from Malaysia or overseas,

as when visiting the temple we would know the culture and the way how the local behave.

This is an extra knowledge that we can get from this tourist point, and it should be spread

wildly to others. Moreover, Wat Waranam is a famous tourism point in Kampung Kok

Seraya because of its supernatural story, where one of the building in the temple is

actually being haunted by spirit and there were a lot of supernatural cases happened in

that building. This attracts a lot of outsider to visit and to explore the haunted building,

however they are now renovating this building in a hope that the extraordinary case

would be solved or reduced, they also try to give the building a beautiful exterior to

attract more tourist to visit to their temple.

The haunted building which is under renovation.

Moreover, food is also a valuable as a tourist attraction in Kampung Kok Seraya.

One of the most special food sold in this village is Khao Jam in the village. Khao Jam, in

the Thai language the word “Khao” means rice and “Jam” means mixed, where is

represents that, the rice is eaten with mixed vegetable. Among these vegetable, there are,

long beans, onion, cucumber, Keropok and fish. Khao Jam is actually similar to Nasi

Kerabu from other cities but the only difference is that in the Khao Jam rice they actually

include an ingredient named “Budu” where it is a sauce that made from fish and it taste

salty and has a strong salty smell. This sauce successfully brings the taste of Kao Jam to a

higher level. Besides, the color of the rice is different from Nasi Kerabu, where Nasi

Kerabu is blue in color, while Khao Jam has a green color rice to be served.

Lastly, the traditional activities held also can be an attraction for the tourism. The

example for the activities are traditional dancing such as Panggung Menora performed by

the teenagers in the village are special performance that can hardly been found in other

place and the performance was specially held by the dance crew in this village as they are

well trained and are the best performers in the city. They were the champions in the

traditional dancing competition held in this year, 2016, and will depart to Paris, France in

June to give a performance oversea.

Entrepreneurship Opportunities

According to what we observed in the village, we can see that there is no restaurant

regardless of Malay or Chinese restaurant. Therefore, we think that restaurant would be

an entrepreneurship opportunity for the residents. Since, their main economic activity is

farming, if they include restaurant in their daily activities this will caused increase the

economic of scale and scope as they can sell their crops to the nearby resident which lives

in the village or they can use the crops by their own for restaurant purpose. As we visit

through Kampung Kok Seraya there is only a small home style “mamak” where they only

sell snacks, kuih-muih and beverage, where we think the resources can be utilize by the

residents. Therefore, we think that, the villager can actually get subsidiary fund from the

local government to operate a better environment restaurant. As there are many resources

that can be used by them and lower cost in operating in restaurant sectors.

The small Malay style food stall in Kampung Kok Seraya. The man at the middle is the Headman of

Kampung Kok Seraya, Beng Khieu a/l Ehsi. On the left is the Sik Chieu Hiang, Goh Ching Yoong, Goa

Soon Hwa and Low Hui Li.

Second, in Kampung Kok Seraya there is no school for the youngster to get their

education. As we all know that early stage education is actually an important stage for the

youngster learn how to take good care of themselves, to learn the basics academic in their

education level, and also they will learn how to communicate with one and each other in

the early education learning. Therefore, parents will actually hope that this education

center will be located near their house for them to send their own children daily for their

education. Besides, parents nowadays are busy working and will have to leave their

children for child care at their neighbor’s home, where they actually could not guarantee

the safety of their children and they do not know what their children actually learn from

their neighbor’s home. Hence, by setting up a professional early education center or

nursery will convince the parents and they will have more confidence towards a

professional or licensed child care to take care for their own children.

We also think that Kampung Kok Seraya have the potential to provide a weekly

dancing class to the non-village resident. As they are having a good reputation and

experienced dancer in traditional dancing, therefore, each of the dancer might have the

opportunity to build up a dance center inside the village or at the town area. Traditional

dance is really difficult for one to learn and the number of thoses who knows how to

perform a traditional dancing is getting smaller each year. It is a meaningful culture that

should be passed down to the next generation and it will also give the teenager an

opportunity to operate their own business while they are young.

Besides that, we were told by the Headman of the village that a few centuries back

the village is actually having a huge, deep and wide river linking the village with the

Pacific Ocean, most of the business men came over the sea and traded their goods at this

area. They trade for the goods from Thailand and also the spices from Malaya (name of

Malaysia at that time). However, this glorious situation did not been survive until today,

as the riverbank is shallow compared to before due to the changes in geographic situation

and the improvement of technology of the foreign traders decline and the trading state of

the village. Therefore, we think that, if more education is provided to the villagers about

the entrepreneurship skill, it might actually rebuild the situation that was once in the

village. Where they can trade their crops in future and also all the other agricultural

products. For example, they can improve their plantation system and get more output

when the crops are harvested; improve the quality of the plantation from non-organic

vegetable to organic vegetable. All these changes will actually give them more

opportunity to increase their sales on agricultural sector.

Lastly, when there are more trades on their agricultural product more factories will

be needed, the capital inflow for the village will actually increase and caused the villagers

to be wealthier. The entrepreneurship opportunity we tried to mention here is that, more

factories can be invested in Kampung Kok Seraya as their main economic activities

nowadays is agricultural activities, where with the help of building factory can help the

farmer to sell their crops quicker. This is because, the factory buys the product from the

farmer and they can process the crop into can food, for example, fruit can, red bean can,

green bean can etc. It can ease the selling process of the farmer and increase their daily

sales and wealth.

Problems and Needs of People

The first problem faced by villagers in Kampung Kok Seraya is that the drainage

system within the village is not functioning well. This will cause the waste substances

unable to be excreted from the village which could lead to water pollution in the village.

Some of the drain are cracked which causes the water to leaked out to the road and

damaged the road.

The second problem that occurs in the village is the security issues. There is a police

station in the nearby village which causes robbery happened frequently at night. Villagers

were not encouraged to walk alone at the dark street at night as robbery mostly occurs tat

night. Besides, there was once the villager who informed the police about a bomb that

was found in the village which was plant by ISIS. This caused the villagers feel unsafe to

live in the village.

The third problem was the road to Kampung Kok Seraya. There were few cracked

roads mentioned before, which will cause accidents to the motorcyclist when they got to

the village. From the Village to Town, the road was too narrow which could only have

one car to bypass and also there were no street lights along the road.

The fourth problem was medical facilities. There is no hospital nor clinic in the

village. If the villager was ill or an emergency case happen, they cannot get medical

treatment immediately. There a hospital located outside the village, but is quite far from

the village where the villager cannot get help immediately.

Lastly, the mosquito diseases caused by the drain system mention above would grow

drastically in such environment. The mosquito will carry disease which will cause dengue

fever and will increase the healthy risk of the village.

In the relation to the problem mentioned above, the head of the village wish to fix the

water pollution problem in order to give the villager a clean environment. Besides that,

the head of village wish that the government can help them to solve the problem about the

road to Kampung Kok Seraya, which could widen the road and build the street light along

the road. The head of village also wish that can have a police station and hospital build

within the village. Apart from this, the villager hopes to have a community hall which

could held some sport activities and events.

Recommendation

The recommendation that we suggest is that, the headmen of the village could try to

expand and add more water system in the village. This could be done by the headman’s

negotiation or discussion with the policy maker at the Kelantan – PAS. Moreover, the

water pollution problem that occured in the village can actually be solved by cooperating

with Indah Water, as there is no organization in the village that will help purified the

water, therefore, they should ask for the services from Indah Water to help them to clean

the water.

Next, recommendation to solve the robbery issues is that we suggest that, the

headmen should request the government to install more lights at the streets and reduce the

possibility of robbery problem. Besides, the villagers can also take turn to patrol the

village at night time which can stop the criminal to hurt the other weaker villagers, such

as the senior citizens and the children.

Lastly, the mosquito problem can be solve by having an awareness campaign in the

village and clear the waterlogged in the village. Besides, they also apply from

government to have the mosquito parricidal oil or flit MLO spraying section in the village

to prevent the dengue problem.
