This is the fifth year that I’ve selected my favourite Ribera del Dueros at the invitation of the local Consejo Regulador. (The final choice, I should add, is entirely my own, with no outside influence whatsoever.) After a COVID-affected break in 2020, when all the wines were tasted in London, I returned to the region in September 2021 for my longest and most intense trip yet. All in all, I tasted a record 537 wines from 149 bodegas, visiting 58 of them in person. I also spent two mornings entirely dedicated to vineyards.

Ribera del Duero is predominantly a red wine region, of course, with Tinto Fino the dominant grape. But it also makes rosés, or claretes – indeed, this was the region’s dominant wine style as recently as the 1970s – and, since the 2019 vintage, has authorised the release of white wines from the local Albillo Mayor grape under the Denominación de Origen. There were two of these in last year’s Top 100 and five this year, with several very different styles on offer.

Ribera del Duero is a famously extreme, even marginal area, which has one of the shortest growing seasons on the planet. Frosts are not unheard of in June and the harvest is normally completed by mid-October, or earlier in hotter vintages. There is considerable variation from one year to the next, which is as much a strength as a weakness in a fine wine region, where consumers prize quality and an expression of place above consistency.

The four vintages that dominate this year’s Top 100 are a case in point. 2019 (30 wines) was a hot, dry, but balanced vintage, while 2018 (26 wines) and 2016 (18 wines) were both cooler, so called “Atlantic” vintages. 2017 (10 wines), meanwhile, was something of a paradox: hit by a devastating frost in late April, but also very warm during most of the growing season. Apart from these four vintages, there are wines from 2015, 2014, 2012, 2011 and even 1991 in my selection. There was also a single Non-Vintage blend, which earned 100 points.

Talking of points, all of the wines in the Top 100 scored 94 points or more. This reflects increases in quality rather than score inflation in my view. Every year, I am heartened by the general shift in style – at least among the top producers – towards greater elegance, freshness and balance and away from power, alcohol and reliance on colour and oak rather than fruit and acidity.

There has been a degree of evolution, too, among the bodegas represented in the Top 100. Some producers have been there since the start – how can you create such a list without Dominio de Pingus, Hermanos Pérez Pascuas, Hermanos Sastre and Vega Sicilia, for instance? – but there are additions every year. Four notable newcomers in 2021 are Erre Vinos, Francisco Barona, Mélida Wines and Quinta Milú, all of them run by talented young winemakers.

IntroductionIt takes time to get to know a great wine region, especially one as diverse as Ribera del Duero. There are no shortcuts to understanding. You have to talk to winemakers, walk through vineyards, read the available literature and, of course, taste the wines over a series of vintages, noting the effects of different growing seasons and techniques and the way they evolve in bottle. I still have a lot to learn, but it’s been a pleasure and a revelation spending quality time in Ribera del Duero since 2017.

One last trend that I would again like to highlight is the general trend towards wines that are village and parcel specific. Some of the best Riberas are blended across the region – Aalto, Ausàs and Garmón being three top examples – but a growing number reflect individual terroirs. As people learn more about Ribera del Duero, so they will learn to recognise the differences between wines from, say, Anguix , Aranda and Atauta, or Moradillo de Roa, Nava de Roa and Roa itself. The next step will be the recognition of the very best sites, possibly as the equivalent of Burgundy’s Grands Crus.

I think this is a good thing, as it will help consumers and even wine specialists to understand the diversity of which the DO is capable. Winemaking style will always have an influence on the finished wine, but, as estate agents are always telling us, it’s location, location, location that really matters.

I hope you enjoy tasting the wines from my 2021 Ribera Top 100 as I did selecting them.

Tasting notesReds

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial (2022 Release) NV(14.5%) Vega's Reserva Especial is surely the only world-class unfortified red that's a blend of vintages - 2008, 2010 and 2011 in this instance. Made from Tinto Fino and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s the result of long and harmonious slumber in large wooden foudres after previous ageing in smaller barrels. Structured, complex and elegant, with hints of tobacco leaf and balsam, a sprinkling of sweet baking spices, focused acidity and palate-caressing tannins. Perfection. 2021-25

Dominio de Es La Diva Cosecha 2019(14%) Production is tiny at only 450 bottles, partly because of a May frost in 2019, but this is one of the world's greatest red wines, so well worth tracking down. Is it a diva? It's certainly restrained and possibly a little haughty, mixing Tinto Fino and 5% Albillo Mayor from sandy limestone soils. Elegant, detailed and refined, it's the Musigny of Ribera de Duero, with lovely precision, freshness and complexity, well-integrated new oak, plenty of minerality and incredible length. 2025-35

Dominio de Pingus Cosecha 2019(14%) The latest Pingus release doesn't quite scale the heights of the 2018 release, but this is still one of the very best wines in the region and Spain for that matter. Aged in older wood - there have been no new barrels since 2012 - it comes from two neighbouring parcels in La Horra (Barroso and San Cristóbal). Spicy, silky and almost delicate on the nose, it's a deftly wooded, refined red with filigree tannins, raspberry and wild strawberry fruit and understated density and concentration. 2024-35

Grupo Yllera Vivaltus Cosecha 2018(14.5%) The maiden 2016 vintage has only just been released through the Place de Bordeaux, so it may be a little premature to review this 2018, but make sure you remind yourself to buy a case in two years' time. Produced without Cabernet Sauvignon for the first time, it's the polar opposite of the big, ripe, overwooded styles of Ribera. Nuanced, refined and hauntingly balanced, with perfumed oak, lovely texture and balance, leafy, graphite-like complexity and the length of a world-class wine. 2023-35

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva 2012(14.5%) The latest in a superb run of Único releases, the 2012 is a finely judged cuvée of Tinto Fino and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards on the south side of the Duero River with a northerly aspect. There's no sign of the heat of the vintage here on a wine that is poised, complex and self-assured. Floral, mature and nicely evolved, with fine French and American oak, graceful tannins and a hint of graphite. One of Spain's greatest reds. 2021-37

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro Gran Arzuaga Gran Reserva 2015(14.1%) Adolfo González sources grapes from all three of Ribera del Duero's provinces to produce this stunning blend of Tinto Fino and 1% Albillo Mayor, which deservedly ranks among the best reds in the region. Aged in larger French oak barrels, it's a small production wine that's only made in the best vintages. Refined, elegant and complex, with savoury tannins, succulent fruit sweetness and a balsamic lift. 2021-30

Bodegas Garmón Contintental Garmón Cosecha 2019(14.5%) Eduardo García used fruit from six different villages - Anguix, Baños de Valdearados. La Aguilera, Moradillo, Quintanilla de Onésimo and Tubilla del Lago - to produce the latest vintage of this world-class red, blending their characters as an artist might mix a palette of colours. Spicy, chalky, structured yet refined, with haunting perfume, subtle oak, enviable density, energy and poise and the concentration to age. 2024-35

Bodegas Valdaya Mirum Cosecha 2019(14.5%) One of the great wines of Spain, not just Ribera del Duero, Mirum comes from a single, 1.2-hectare parcel in Baños de Valdearados. Fermented in concrete vats and aged in 20% new wood, it's pure, focused and violet-scented, with pure plum and black cherry fruit, wonderful vivacity and focus, textured tannins, subtle wood spices and a long, chiselled, balanced finish. 2023-32

Bodegas Valduero Lantigua Gran Reserva 1991(12.5%) There aren't many bottles of this remarkable wine left, but you can still buy it from the bodega at a price. Showing just 12.5% alcohol - how things have changed in Ribera del Duero - it's a mature delight, with beautifully integrated French and American oak, aromas of leather and baking spices, savoury tannins and a core of beguiling balsamic sweetness. 2021-25

Bodegas Valtravieso Gran Valtravieso Cosecha 2018(15%) Volumes are small here, alas, as only eight rows are used to make this superb, high-altitude Tinto Fino from Piñel de Arriba. "The soil speaks here," says Ricardo Velasco, and I think he's right. You can taste the chalk on the tongue. Lightly wooded, refined and complex, it's a bright, focused, supremely energetic wine with some spices from 10% whole bunches and notes of blackberry and orange zest. 2024-35

Dominio de Es Carravilla Cosecha 2019(14.5%) Carravilla is a south-facing, pre-phylloxera parcel on limestone soils in the eastern part of Atauta that's planted with Tinto Fino and 5% Albillo Mayor. Made as a single vineyard wine for the first time in 2019, it's an extraordinary wine, with dark berry fruit, notes of orange zest, palate-cleansing acidity, fine oak, understated power and minerality to spare. 2023-35

Dominio del Aguila Canta La Perdiz Cosecha 2018(14.5%) "Our finest plot" is how Jorge Monzón describes this west and southwest-facing parcel at 890 metres. Cultivated biodynamically, it's one of the oldest vineyards in La Aguilera. Fermented with 100% whole bunches, it's a delicate, refined, layered field blend of Tinto Fino and five other varieties. Taut and focused, with remarkable delicacy, chalky intensity and flavours of citrus, red cherry, raspberry and red plum. Long, spicy and hauntingly ethereal. 2023-35

Francisco Barona Finca Las Dueñas Cosecha 2017(14.5%) One of those wines that's so good and so exciting that you want to tell the world about it, this is a brilliant, whole bunch-fermented field blend from a 0.5-hectare plot in Anguix planted in 1928. Scented, refined and complex, with layers of wild Mediterranean herbs, tobacco leaf, chalky minerality and structured bramble and blackberry fruit. Long, ethereal and effortlessly subtle. Ribera del Duero has a new superstar on its books. 2023-32

Viñedos Alonso del Yerro María de Alonso del Yerro Cosecha 2018(14.5%) María hails from two parcels on the estate - Violeta and El Circo - and is a 60/40 blend of the two sites, both of which are at 800 metres. Subtle, structured and refined, it's chalky, intense, well-balanced Tinto Fino with notes of mint and fresh herbs, lots of perfume and the granular tannins that are its calling card. One of the region's very best reds. 2024-35

Ausàs Interpretación Cosecha 2019(14.5%) Ausàs is made by Xavier Ausàs, the former long-term winemaker at Vega Sicilia, and has established itself in the space of just four vintages as one of the best wines in the region. Very much a pan-regional red, with components from Gumiel de Mercado, Moradillo, Nava de Roa and Roa, sourced from growers and some of his own vines, this is a youthful, engagingly perfumed Tinto Fino that's much more than the sum of its parts. Pure, perfumed and well-balanced, with voluptuous tannins, raspberry and blackberry fruit and bright, balancing acidity. 2024-31

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro Reserva Especial 2016(14.6%) Part of a very impressive line up at this large Golden Mile-based winery, this whole bunch fermented red comes from high-altitude, old vine parcels in Burgos and Soria. Partnering Tinto Fino with 8% Albillo Mayor, with ageing in new French oak, it's a focused, balanced, acid-driven red with notes of pepper and clove, some wild herbs, impressive structure and adroitly handled wood. 2022-31

Bodegas Áster Finca El Otero Cosecha 2018(15%) The old-vine component of the El Otero parcel, running to around seven hectares, supplies the fruit for this ageworthy Tinto Fino. After a frost-induced break in 2017, it's back with interest in 2018. Aged in new French oak, but not dominated by the wood, it's a finely judged red from Julio Sáenz with notes of blackberry and tangerine, filigree tannins and a long, textured finish. 2023-33

Bodegas Félix Callejo Félix Callejo Cosecha 2019(14.5%) Named after Félix Callejo, one of Ribera del Duero's great characters, who features on the label riding a bicycle backwards, this wine hails from two stony parcels - Medio Arroyo and Montecillo - between 900 and 920 metres. Aged in new French barrels of different sizes, it's way less oaky and extracted than it used to be, confirming the shift in style under the new generation. Subtle, floral, complex and detailed, with crunchy red cherry and raspberry fruit, sinewy tannins and a mineral twist. 2024-35

Bodegas Hermanos Pérez Pascuas Pérez Pascuas Gran Reserva 2016(14.5%) Vines over 80 years of age in the Valtarreña pago supply the fruit for this superb Gran Reserva, which is always one of Ribera's most cellar worthy wines. Deftly oaked for 26 months in American and French barrels, it's a red that’s only just beginning to show a fraction of its potential. Chalky and intense, with a hint of reduction, structured dark berry fruit, plenty of acidity and freshness and sinewy tannins. 2025-35

Bodegas Marta Maté Los Perejiles Cosecha 2019(14.1%) Los Perejiles is the name of the parcel as well as the wine, situated at 915 metres in Tubilla del Lago on very chalky soils. Matured in new 500-litre French oak, but not dominated by it, this new release is a complex, refreshing, slightly herbal expression of Tinto Fino and 5% Albillo Mayor with red cherry and pomegranate fruit, savoury tannins and racy, mineral-etched acidity. Wonderfully fresh and long. 2023-31

Bodegas Marta Maté Marta Maté Cosecha 2018(14.1%) There was no 2017 release because of the frosts, but this remarkable high-altitude Tinto Fino is back with interest in 2018. Sourced from organic, 100-year-old plus vineyards in Tubilla del Lago and Gumiel de Mercado, it's a taut, refined, beautifully elegant expression of cooler climate Tinto Fino with chalky intensity, fine tannins, crunchy red cherry and bramble fruit and understated oak. 2023-30

Bodegas y Viñedos Gallego Zapatero Yotuel Finca Valdepalacios Cosecha 2016(14.5%) Consultant Béquer Prieto calls this "one of the best sites in Ribera del Duero" and only a fool would disagree with him. It's a one-hectare plot on clay and sandy soils that faces south, so is often picked early. Sweet, juicy and elegant, with tobacco leaf and wild strawberry notes, fine-boned tannins, subtle 50% new wood and the freshness and energy that define the style at this remarkable bodega. 2022-30

Conde de San Cristóbal Oydor Cosecha 2018(14.5%) This is the first release of Oydor, a new icon wine from Conde de San Cristóbal and very good it is too. All made with Tinto Fino from an ungrafted 0.5-hectare parcel in Quintana del Pidio, some distance from the bodega's home vineyards in Peñafiel. The age of the vines - 160 years - is apparent in the wine's concentration, depth and seriousness of purpose. Spicy, intense and profound. 2023-33

Dominio de Atauta La Mala Reserva 2016(14.3%) La Mala's 0.7 hectares are made up of no fewer than ten different sub-parcels, which gives you some idea of how fragmented Soria's vineyards are. North-facing on sand, clay and limestone soils, it's the most chiselled and mineral-etched of the Dominio de Atauta reds, with arresting freshness and focus, red cherry and pomegranate fruit, subtle oak and a lingering, tapering finish. 2022-30

Dominio de Atauta Valdegatiles Reserva 2016(14.2%) Valdegatiles is a north-facing, 1.09-hectare parcel on clay and limestone soils at 930 metres and tends to produce comparatively plush, textured, well-structured wines by Soria's standards. Backward and a little closed, it has impressive density, understated power, lots of thyme and lavender perfume and dark berry fruit. 2023-32

Dominio de Es La Mata Cosecha 2019(13.8%) La Mata is a single vineyard located on clay soils above the old, semi-abandoned winery quarter in Atauta. East-facing, with some influence from the canyon above, it’s a cool site that's often picked at the end of the season. Made from Tinto Fino with 5% Albillo Mayor and 1% Alicante Bouschet, it's dense and dark, like the interior of a Gothic cathedral, with lovely texture and perfume, spicy new French oak, racy acidity and wonderful poise and palate length. 2022-35

Dominio del Aguila Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva 2016(14%) Peñas Aladas is one of the coolest spots in La Aguilera and can struggle in frost-affected years like 2016. Production of the resulting wine is small at only 1,500 bottles, but this is consistently among the region's best wines. Aged from 54 months in mostly older barrels, it’s a whole bunch-fermented cuvée of Tinto Fino with 5% of other white and red grapes. Chalky, chiselled and pithy with sinewy tannins and impressive depth. 2022-30

Hacienda Monasterio Reserva 2017(15%) Hacienda Monasterio suffered less from the spring frost in 2017, as it did in 1997, so it's no surprise that this is one of the best wines of the vintage, even though the crop was substantially reduced by the drought. Marrying Tinto Fino with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon - the latter grape is a key part of the bodega's style - this is a ripe, perfumed, textured delight, with cassis, pine and rosemary notes, a hint of graphite, fine oak and underlying balsamic complexity. 2022-31

Magna Vides Fuente del Zorro Cosecha 2016(14%) "I don’t know when this vineyard was planted," admits Pablo Arranz, "but it's on its own roots, so it was pre-phylloxera." Co-fermented Tinto Fino and 2% white grapes supply the raw material for the single barrel of this delicious wine, new to the Maga Vides range in 2016. Rosemary and lavender aromas lead you into a palate that's spicy, focused and bright, with fine tannins, tangy red fruits and nuanced oak. 2021-26

Pago de los Capellanes El Nogal Reserva 2016(15.5%) El Nogal comes from a six-hectare farm at 850 metres in Mambrilla on clay and pudding stone soils and is often one of Ribera del Duero's best reds. Easily carrying its new French oak, this is a delicious expression of what Pepe Hidalgo regards as one of the region's greatest vintages. Elegant, refined and well structured, it's a less powerful wine than the 2015, with graceful tannins, refreshing acidity and layers of plum and blackberry fruit. 2022-29

Quinta Milú El Malo Cosecha 2014(14%) El Malo - not to be confused with La Mala from Dominio de Atauta - hails from two vineyards - Transconvento and Calvario - and is only made in selected vintages, with 2014 being the third release after 2009 and 2012. Aged in smaller barrels and released later than the other Quinta Milú wines. Textured and fleshy, with sinewy tannins, pot pourri top notes, racy acidity and the sweetness and precision that are features of the bodega's style. 2022-29

Tr3smano TM Cosecha 2016(14.5%) Slightly preferable to the very good 2018, partly because it's had a couple more years to develop nuance in the bottle, this is a superb modern Ribera from Pedro Aibar and Fernando Remírez de Ganuza. Dense, perfumed and complex, with good tannin structure, autumnal notes of forest floor and tobacco leaf, fine oak, layers of balsam, raspberry and black cherry fruit and the concentration to age. 2022-28

Valdemonjas Abrí Las Alas Cosecha 2019(15%) "I don’t want to make fleshy wines, I want length," says Alejandro Moyano. This wine from an old 0.6-hectare parcel in La Horra on sand and red clay soils is the most structured and backward of his wines, but it's still far from a blockbuster. Focused and compact, with adroitly handled new French oak, fine texture, dark berry fruit and a mineral core. Classy winemaking. 2024-31

Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 Reserva 2017(14.5%) Vega's vineyards were protected from the frosts by wind machines in 2017, so yields were not as badly affected as in some parts of Ribera. Aged in 80% new wood, with an 80/20 split between French and American oak, this is a blend of Tinto Fino and 6% Merlot, which shows a grassy undertone, well-handled tannic structure in a drought year, some wood spices, fine acidity and a balsamic lift. A mini Único. 2025-32

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro Amaya Arzuaga Colección Cosecha 2016(14.1%) Amaya is made with Tinto Fino, 5% Albillo Mayor and a little Bobal, sourced from villages in the high part of Burgos and focused on old vineyards, some of them pre-phylloxeric. Foot trodden and whole bunch fermented, with ageing in new French oak, it's a wonderfully complex, subtle wine with cassis, graphite and coffee bean notes, some pepper spice and a long, tapering finish. 2022-30

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro Gran Reserva 2015(14.4%) Harmony and balance are the watchwords here on this cuvée of Tinto Fino with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, sourced from four sites in the provinces of Burgos and Valladolid. Aged for 56 months in wood, but not dominated by oak, this is appealingly complex and layered, with notes of tobacco leaf, cinnamon and cassis, textured tannins and effortless old-vine concentration. 2022-30

Bodegas Briego Oyada Cosecha 2011(14.5%) Fans of mature Ribera del Duero with appealing bottle age and effortless complexity should get hold of a bottle of this pure Tempranillo from the La Hoyada vineyard at 910 metres in Fompedraza. Less traditional than some of the Benito Hernández brothers' wines, this is aged in French oak for 16 months and is floral, youthful and focused with classic páramo (moorland) acidity and tangy black fruit. 2022-26

Bodegas Briego Gran Reserva 2011(14.5%) Skilfully blending vineyard origins is a feature of several of the Benito brothers’ best wines. This appealingly mature, well-balanced Tinto Fino comes from Curiel de Duero and Fompedraza and is typical of the bodega's elegant, understated style. Savoury, balsamic and fresh, with finely judged 90% new oak and lovely fruit sweetness. The kind of thing that would appeal to traditionalists. 2021-26

Bodegas Félix Callejo Majuelos de Callejo Cosecha 2019(14.5%) Majuelos (the name given to small vineyard parcels in the past) comes from three different sub-zones in Sotillo de la Ribera - Arenales, Montecillo and Nogales. It’s a pure Tinto Fino that's aged in new 225 and 500-litre French oak with malolactic in barrel. Perfumed, intense and well balanced, with old vine concentration, racy red berry fruit, fine tannins and impressive palate length. 2023-32

Bodegas Monteabellón Finca La Blanquera Cosecha 2017(14%) Named after the white clay and limestone soils that feature on its stylish label, this hails from the highest part of Nava de Roa at altitudes of up to 950 metres. Easily handling its new French oak, it's a fresh, intense, chiselled red with impressive focus and balance, savoury tannins and a tapering finish. A Tinto Fino that ages gracefully. 2023-32

Bodegas y Viñedos Gallego Zapatero Yotuel Finca de San Miguel Cosecha 2012(14.5%) One of a series of outstanding single vineyard wines from this Anguix-based family winery, Finca de San Miguel comes from a 0.65-hectare plot that was planted in 1925. Showing the freshness of its northerly exposure, it has plenty of underlying concentration and structure, with layers of dark plum and damson fruit, tangy acidity and sweetly integrated 35% new oak. You'd never guess this is nine years old. 2022-30

Bodegas y Viñedos Gallego Zapatero Yotuel Finca La Nava Cosecha 2016(14.5%) Finca La Nava is a north-facing, 0.8-hectare parcel on clay and limestone soils in the upper part of Anguix that produces tiny berries of Tinto Fino. Aged in 20% new wood, this is a subtly reduced delight with lots of chalky intensity, sinewy tannins, layers of bramble and red berry fruit, and finely integrated oak. A fine expression of one of the village's best sites. 2022-31

Dominio de Atauta La Roza Reserva 2016(14%) La Roza is a very special north-facing vineyard: 0.24 hectares planted 170 years ago on very poor sand and pudding stone soils. The result is one of the densest and most complete wines in the Dominio de Atauta portfolio, with effortless concentration and intensity, notes of fennel, balsam and rosemary, layered, fine-grained tannins and punchy black cherry and blueberry fruit. 2023-32

Dominio de Atauta Llanos del Almendro Reserva 2016(14.5%) "We're looking for elegance here," says Jaime Suárez of this single parcel wine from a north-facing, 1.39-hectare parcel at 965 metres on sand and clay soils. Matured in older French oak, it's a wild herb perfumed delight with notes of thyme and pine, spicy tannins, appealing freshness and tangy red berry fruit. Delicious. 2021-30

Dominio de Cair Cruz del Pendón Cosecha 2015(14.5%) Juan Luis Cañas sources his top wine from a 1.15-hectare bush vine parcel in La Aguilera, planted in 1941 and 1947 at 840 metres. Different in style to the wines he produces in Rioja, which tend to show more oak in their youth, this is floral and refined, with a hint of stony reduction, succulent red berry fruit, real zip and energy and some gentle oak spices. 2024-32

Dominio de Es Viñas Viejas de Soria Cosecha 2019(14.5%) This very old vine cuvée - some of the parcels date back to the beginning of the last century - comes from 26 different plots in the village of Atauta. Fermented with 40% whole bunches and aged in 32% new oak, it's a blend of Tinto Fino with 5% Albillo Mayor and 1% each of Garnacha and Alicante Bouschet. Violet and rosemary are a prelude to a vibrant, layered palate with impressive density and grip and the freshness that comes with the terroir. 2024-31

Dominio de Pingus Flor de Pingus Cosecha 2019(14%) Flor is what Peter Sisseck calls his La Horra "village wine", which is not to damn it with faint praise in the slightest, given the quality of the liquid. Made with younger vines on clay and silt rather than stony soils, it's a subtle, graceful, nuanced red that doesn't show the heat of the 2019 vintage, partly because of early picking. Detailed and focused, with red berry sweetness, fine tannins and understated 25% new oak. 2023-27

Hermanos Sastre Pesus Selección de Pedro y Jesús Cosecha 2015(14.5%) Produced in small quantities of just 2,000 bottles, Pesus is an ambitious wine that takes no prisoners. Aged in 150% new wood (it used to be 200%), it comes from three old-vine parcels totalling two hectares in La Horra. Fleshy, intense and concentrated, it's no shrinking violet, but it has time and underlying balance on its side. Dense, dark and brooding with substantial tannic grip. 2025-35

Magna Vides Cosecha 2019(13.5%) "We like pure wines," says Andrea Sanz of this refined, early-picked cuvée of Tinto Fino and 5% Albillo Mayor, which weighs in at just 13.5% alcohol. Elegant, floral and sappy, this is a Ribera red that nods towards Burgundy in style, with wonderful freshness and detail, subtle 10% new wood and layers of raspberry, plum and wild strawberry. Long and complex. 2022-29

Pago de Carraovejas El Anejón Cosecha 2016(15%) Very different in style from the more powerful 2015 release, although this 2016 still has 15.5% alcohol, the latest release of El Anejón also has a much higher percentage of Tempranillo at 94%, with 4% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon making up the balance. Sourced from a single parcel on limestone at 850 metres, it's wonderfully floral and fresh, with violet and black cherry notes, fine new wood and a hint of stony reduction. 2023-35

Quinta Milú Bellavista Cosecha 2018(13.5%) One of two versions of this wine - the other is fermented and aged in amphoras - this is foot-trodden in open barrels before ageing in older French oak. Unfined and unfiltered, it has enticing wild herb aromas of rosemary and thyme, crunchy bramble and black cherry fruit, succulent sweetness and understated spices. Lovely winemaking from a brilliant boutique operation. 2022-28

Tr3smano TM Cosecha 2018(15%) TM comes from a 100-year-old vineyard on the border between Anguix and La Horra. Now in its fourth vintage, it's a serious, full-bodied Tinto Fino that shows its low yields. The new French oak is vey well handled, framing the layered perfumed fruit. Fresh despite the power and weight, this has chalky minerality, dark berry flavours a balsamic lift. Classy stuff. 2023-30

Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos Aalto Cosecha 2019(15%) Few Riberas combine grapes from so many sources - 200 parcels from 30 suppliers in nine villages - as this regular release from Aalto. Youthful, perfumed and structured, with scented 30% new French and American oak, notes of cigar box, cinnamon, red berry and blackberry, supple tannins and enough acidity for balance. Ripe and glossy. 2023-27

Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos Aalto PS Cosecha 2019(15%) PS isn’t made in every vintage - there was no 2002 or 2007 - but it's very much an icon wine. Based on grapes from La Aguilera and La Horra, it does its malolactic in American oak before ageing in new French barrels. Coffee bean aromas segue into a palate that's ripe, fleshy and serious, with sweet red fruit intensity, appealing zip for a wine with 15% alcohol and the concentration to age. 2024-34

Alión Cosecha 2018(15%) Alión is a pan-Ribera cuvée, with around half of the grapes bought from growers in Anguix, La Aguilera, La Horra, Moradillo, Nava and Padilla and the rest from Vega Sicilia. It's very different in style from the wines of its parent company, with the focus on French oak, 80% of it new, and just 10% American wood. Floral and refined, with intense perfume, polished tannins, layered bramble and blackberry fruit and chalky precision. A delicious Alión. 2023-32

Bodegas Antídoto La Hormiga de Antídoto Cosecha 2019(14.5%) La Hormiga hails from dozens of small parcels on clay and limestone soils to the north of the Duero River in the villages of Matanza, Quintanilla de Tres Barrios and Villálvaro. Aged in 50% new French oak, it has wonderful precision and focus, violet and rose petal aromas, a hint of Mediterranean garrigue, tangy red cherry and blackberry fruit and a sheen of wood spices. 2022-28

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro Reserva 2018(14.2%) Ignacio Arzuaga may bemoan the fact that people drink his Reserva too young - the bodega's wine ages extremely well - but there's no denying that they are a pleasure to consume at different points in their evolution. This assemblage of Tinto Fino with 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot is a case in point, with fine, granular tannins, subtle oak, a hint of balsam and lovely poise and freshness. 2022-30

Bodegas Bohórquez Cuvée Especial Cosecha 2016(14.8%) Made in small quantities of just 1,000 bottles, but this is one of those wines that's well worth tracking down. Barrel-fermented before ageing in larger foudres (tinajas), it's a Bordeaux-influenced assemblage of Tinto Fino with 12.5% each of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Floral, savoury and spicy, this is a beautifully defined, balanced Ribera with tobacco leaf and ginger undertones and impressive palate length. 2022-31

Bodegas El Lagar de Isilla Paraje Peñalobos Cosecha 2018(14.5%) Aurelio García makes the comparatively small volumes of this wine from three 100-year-old vineyards in high-altitude Peñaranda de Duero. Serious, sappy and pleasantly reductive, with floral top notes, the acidity you'd expect from vines at 990 metres, chalky freshness and flavours of patisserie and wild strawberry. 2022-28

Bodegas Félix Callejo Finca Valdelroble Cosecha 2019(14.5%) Finca Valderoble is the only single vineyard red at the bodega, located at 930 metres on a site that founder Félix Callejo once intended to use as a landing strip. Made from co-fermented Tinto Fino and 25% Merlot, with ageing in concrete and 500-litre oak barrels, this is pure, focused and textured, showing scented wood, racy red cherry and raspberry fruit and a grassy undertone. 2023-30

Bodegas Hermanos Pérez Pascuas Viña Pedrosa Reserva 2018(14.5%) This was the last vintage of Viña Pedrosa Reserva that was made by José Manuel Pérez Ovejas before his departure and it's a fitting tribute to his talents. Produced with Tinto Fino from the El Prado vineyard, it's a structured, well-balanced, ageworthy red that was aged in a combination of French and American oak. Focused, textured, spicy and floral, it's a wine with time on its side. 2023-35

Bodegas La Horra Corimbo I Reserva 2016(14.5%) Bodegas La Horra's top wine is built to age, eschewing easy drinkability in its youth. This hails from vineyards in five higher altitude Burgos vineyards with an average age of 60 years. Intense, savoury and sinewy, with some chalky freshness, notes of incense and dried herbs and layers of damson and tobacco leaf. Give it a few more years in bottle. 2023-28

Bodegas Marta Maté Raspón Cosecha 2019(14.2%) The second release of Marta Castrillo and César Maté's Raspón is every bit as good as the 2016, sourced from a biodynamic vineyard at 930 metres in Gumiel de Mercado. If your impression of Ribera reds is that they're big, oaky and inky, this will come as a surprise, being closer to red Burgundy in style. Picked late so that the stems are lignified, it's a fine, focused, graceful red with some cloves spice, sappy red cherry and raspberry fruit and the faintest hint of oak. Delicious. 2021-27

Bodegas Monteabellón Finca Matambres Cosecha 2017(14%) Finca Matambres is a single vineyard expression of Tinto Fino from a vineyard on sandy loam and pebbles at 800 metres in Nava de Roa. Selection was the key to the quality of this wine in the tricky 2017 vintage, according to Isaac Fernández. Chalk influenced, it's a floral, nuanced, Bordeaux-influenced red that's driven by acidity, with dark berry fruit, fine oak and perfumed French oak. 2023-29

Bodegas Trus Punto Geodésico Cosecha 2019(14.5%) This is the second vintage of Bodegas Trus' impressive wine, produced with purchased old vine fruit in Moradillo, Peñaranda, La Aguilera and Baños de Valdearados. Chalky, fresh and almost flirting with chiselled austerity, it's all about limestone bite and tang, fine tannins and deftly handled wood. Herbal and slightly green, Punto Geodísico is a finely judged young Tinto Fino with the balance and intensity to age in bottle. 2023-29

Bodegas Valdaya Cosecha 2019(14.5%) The straight Valdaya release is made with fruit from three different soil types in remote, high-altitude Baños de Valdearados. Intensely floral and refined as Marta Ramas and Miguel Fisac's wines always are, this is a polished Ribera with chalky intensity, fine-boned tannins and layers of plum and blueberry fruit. 2023-29

Bodegas Valtravieso VT Tinto Fino Cosecha 2019(14.5%) "I like Tinto Fino just at the limit of ripeness, with crunchy notes," says Ricardo Velasco of this high altitude red from two parcels on the limestone-rich La Revilla estate. Elegant, chiselled and picked comparatively early for a páramo wine, this is engagingly fresh and tangy with rose petal aromas, chalky minerality, understated wood and the natural balance of this unusual site. 2023-29

Bodegas Valtravieso VT Vendimia Seleccionada Cosecha 2019(14.5%) It takes bravery to plant Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon at over 900 metres in Ribera del Duero, but the gamble has paid off at Valtravieso. This is a cuvée with 75% Tinto Fino and 25% of the two Bordeaux grapes, aged in 20% new French oak, and it's delightfully fresh and subtle, with filigree tannins, cut grass and capsicum undertones, tangy acidity and a long, nuanced finish. 2023-31

Bodegas Viña Mayor Secreto 3 RB Cosecha 2018(14.5%) Secreto 3 is the best wine yet under this increasingly impressive label, made by the effervescent Almudena Alberca MW. All sourced from red clay soils in La Horra, it's a perfumed, elegant, refined wine that's reminiscent of a Pinot Noir in some senses. Subtle reduction, old vine concentration, understated oak and layers of raspberry, tangerine and wild strawberry fruit make this a pleasure to drink. 2022-26

Bodegas y Viñedos Gallego Zapatero Finca Camino Viejo Cosecha 2016(14.5%) Camino Viejo is one of the bodega's cooler sites and is often among the last to be picked. It's a 0.65-hectare parcel on sandy clay soils that produce wines that are lighter and less intense than some of Gallego Zapatero's other crus, with red berry fruit, racy acidity, subtle reduction and top notes of pine and rosemary. The oak, as ever, is extremely well integrated here. 2022-28

Cillar de Silos La Viña de Amalio Cosecha 2019(14.5%) La Viña de Amalio hails from the Carramonzón parcel, planted in 1964 in Quintana del Pidio. Matured in new French oak, it's still a very young wine at the moment, with one eye on the future. Intense, bold and violet perfumed, with notes of mocha and chocolate, sweet spices and dark berry fruit supported by stony acidity. Needs more time in bottle, but this is always an impressive red. 2024-34

Conde de San Cristóbal Reserva Especial 2019(14.5%) Until 2014, the Reserva Especial contained 10% each of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, but since 2015 it has been a varietal Tinto Fino from a three-hectare block in La Calvacha. Subtly wooded and refined, with no sign of the heat of the vintage, chalky freshness, fine tannins and admirable texture. Rather than a blockbuster, this is a wine of grace and finesse. 2023-29

D.O.5. Hispanobodegas 12 Linajes Finca Los Arenales Cosecha 2018(14.5%) No fewer than 19 small parcels, or majuelos, make up the 2.161 hectares of very old vines used to produce this exciting red from Finca Los Arenales in Soria, located at 960 metres. A wonderful expression of one of Ribera's smallest but most exciting areas, it's concentrated yet refreshing at the same time, with understated oak spices, racy red berry and black cherry fruit and sculpted tannins. 2022-27

Dominio Basconcillos Viña Magna Reserva 2018(15.5%) It takes guts to make a wine with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in a site that's as high and windy as this one, but Dominio Basconcillos' Tinto Fino-based cuvée has always marched to its own drumbeat. Aromatic and refined, despite its 15.5% alcohol, this has fine tannins, vanilla and red berry flavours and an undertone of graphite and cut grass. 2023-30

Dominio de Atauta Reserva 2018(14.5%) "The 25 terroirs of the Atauta Valley in a single bottle" is how viticulturist Ismael Sanz describes this varietal Tinto Fino from Soria. Using fruit from vineyards between 120 and 170 years of age, it's an appealingly affordable wine at the price. Floral, chalky and precise, with impressive structure and freshness, perfumed 15% new wood, red berry and black cherry fruit and a waft of dried herbs. 2022-29

Dominio del Aguila Reserva 2018(14%) This certified organic red uses fruit from a remarkable 150 parcels, all of them over 100 years' old in La Aguilera. Crunchy, youthful and focused, with notes of clove and pepper spice from whole bunch fermentation, understated oak, chalky freshness and intensity, plenty of colour and grip and flavours of tobacco leaf, blackberry and orange zest. Serious, structured, yet refreshing. 2023-30

Dominio Fournier Reserva 2019(15%) It's a pleasure to see Dominio Fournier back on form with a wine as good as this one. Sourced from older vines on this Berlangas de Roa estate, it's a rich, perfumed, full-bodied Tinto Fino with stylish 50% new French oak, impressive structure and density, notes of wild herbs and graphite and layers of youthful bramble and blackberry fruit. Layered and complex. 2023-31

Erre Vinos Acediano Cosecha 2018(14.5%) There are only 4,000 bottles of this Tinto Fino from a parcel at 840 metres on white sandy soils in up-and-coming Nava de Roa, alas, but it's well worth tracking down. Made by Rafa García and Raúl Tamayo, it has outgrown its garage wine origins to become something much more serious and substantial. Peppery, fresh and intense with a hint of good reduction and lots of zip and energy. 2023-30

Francisco Barona Cosecha 2019(14.5%) The youthful, hard-working, over-achieving Francisco Barona is one of the most exciting things to happen to Ribera del Duero in the last decade. This hugely impressive red comes from vineyards planted between 1908 and 1948 in Anguix, La Aguilera and Roa and is a blend of Tinto Fino with 20% "other" grapes that include Albillo Mayor, Bobal, Garnacha and Jaén. Intense, wild and savoury with 15% whole bunches, fine texture, violet and rose petal top notes, subtle wood and a finish of wild herbs and succulent berry fruit. 2023-29

Grupo Yllera Flor de Vivaltus Cosecha 2018(14.5%) The second wine of Vivaltus is pretty impressive in its own right. Deceptively supple and easy to drink, it's a beautifully judged, harmonious cuvée of Tinto Fino with 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, showing aromas and flavours that have as much to do with Right Bank Bordeaux as they do with Ribera. Subtly wooded, sculpted and refreshing, it has fine oak, caressing tannins, green herb and red fruit flavours and plenty of balancing acidity. 2023-30

Grupo Yllera Meraldis Cosecha 2018(14%) Meraldis was first made in 2015 but changed style following the arrival of Jean-Claude Berrouet in 2016. This 2018 is arguably the best release yet. Made entirely from Tinto Fino, some of which was declassified from the Vivaltus project, this is floral, polished and fine with oak folded into the texture of the wine, vibrant acidity and nuanced, filigree tannins. 2023-30

Hacienda Solano Finca Cascorrales Cosecha 2017(14.5%) Finca Cascorrales is one of the oldest and most beautiful vineyards in La Aguilera, a place of energy and tranquillity planted in 1895 on sandstone and silex soils. Thyme and lavender aromas lead you into a palate of plum and blackberry, with wonderful focused, taut acidity, plenty of grip and structure and the faintest whisper of oak. 2022-29

Hermanos Sastre Pago de Santa Cruz Gran Reserva 2015(14.5%) If Pesus is Jesús Sastre's unashamedly modern Ribera, this is altogether more classic and traditional, aged in a mixture of older French and 30% American oak. Spicy, savoury and high-toned, with a slight volatile lift, fine tannins, lots of perfume and notes of tobacco leaf and Asian spices. Complex, refined and very long. 2022-27

La Loba Cosecha 2018(14%) La Loba is made with old vines - and out here in Soria, they can be positively ancient - from the villages of Matanza and Quintanilla de Tres Barrios. Rich, structured and deeply coloured, it's a pure Tinto Fino that sees around 10% new wood. Powerful yet acid driven, with impressive minerality, a waft of wild herbs and a sappy finish. 2023-28

Legaris Alcubilla de Avellaneda Cosecha 2017(15%) Part of the village wine range since it started in 2015, this is always among the last vineyards to be picked, located at a chilly 926 metres in Soria, close to the eastern limit of the denominación. Violet and rose petal aromas segue into a palate that's racy, fresh and energetic with impressive structure and a chalky tang. 2022-29

Legaris Peñaranda de Duero Cosecha 2017(15%) Starting in 2015, Legaris has made three of these so-called village wines each year, looking to express the different terroirs of Ribera del Duero. This comes from a trio of small parcels in one of the highest parts of Burgos, close to the border with Soria. The most delicate and refined of the bottlings in 2017, it's an old wood-aged delight with notes of wild herbs, tobacco leaf and red fruits embellished by savoury tannins and refreshing acidity. 2022-29

M. Chapoutier España Dominio del Soto Gran Reserva 2018(14.5%) This Gran Reserva hails from a single plot called Travesaña and is another triumph from Michel Chapoutier's increasingly impressive operation. Savoury, serious and textured, with lovely tobacco leaf and forest floor notes, engaging freshness and focus, fine-grained tannins and tangy dark berry fruit. 2023-30

M. Chapoutier España Dominio del Soto Reserva 2019(14.5%) Made with selected lots in the cellar rather than hailing from specific blocks, this is a youthful but extremely complex Tempranillo from this French-owned but Spanish-run operation. Lavender and rosemary aromas segue into a palate that's tangy, chalky and well structured, with high-altitude acidity and vivid dark berry fruit. 2024-32

Mélida Wines Dos Alas Rojas Cosecha 2019(14.5%) The source of this wine changed in 2019 to a single parcel (El Charco) at 900 metres in Moradillo de Roa, but the quality is every bit as good as it was in 2018. Aged in new French oak, but not dominated by it in any way, this is textured, perfumed and well balanced, with racy acidity, violet top notes, structured, nuanced tannins and layers of blueberry and black cherry fruit. 2023-30

Mélida Wines Eternauta Cosecha 2020(14.5%) This is the first vintage of Eternauta, made with 45-year-old vines from two cool parcels - Pollos and Pico Bajero - in the high-altitude village of Milagros. Fermented with 40% whole bunches, it shows the remarkable freshness of its northwest-facing site, with notes of white pepper and mint, chalky intensity, subtle wood and undertones of wild herbs. An exciting début from this youthful project. 2023-30

Montebaco Parcela Cara Norte Cosecha 2018(14.5%) Cara Norte - the north face - comes from a seven-hectare vineyard on the Monte Alto estate and is always a delight to drink. Picked in the middle of October, it's a graceful, perfumed, elegant Tinto Fino that is almost Pinot Noir like in terms of perfume and structure. Herbal, taut and very lightly wooded with notes of tobacco and clove, some pepper spice and a long, vibrant, chalky finish. 2023-30

Quinta Milú Valdevicente Cosecha 2018(13.8%) "Our only problem is that wild deer eat the grapes," says Germán Robles of this 100-year-old, 3.5-hectare parcel of co-planted Tinto Fino, Garnacha and Albillo Mayor, located close to the woods in La Aguilera at 940 metres. Subtle rose petal scents segue into a fine, elegant, vibrant palate, with engaging texture, racy acidity and raspberry and wild strawberry flavours. 2022-27

Valdemonjas Los Tres Dones Cosecha 2019(14.5%) Los Tres Dones combines grapes from two of the highest parcels on the estate - Galeria and Balcón - with a third parcel in La Horra called El Nogal de la Valera that provides a little more grip. Lightly wooded, with some good reduction, lots of refreshing acidity, bright plum and red berry fruit and sinewy tannins. Polished winemaking from one of my favourite Ribera estates. 2023-30

Viñedos y Bodegas García Figuero Milagros de Figuero Cosecha 2017(15%) Milagros - miracles in Spanish - is a single vineyard Tinto Fino from the evocatively named Paraje del Camino de los Frailes close to the Duero River. Aged in new 500-litre French oak barrels, it's appealingly fresh and well balanced for a wine with 15% alcohol, with good volume and texture, sweet baking spices and plenty of tangy black cherry and blueberry fruit. La Horra at its best. 2023-32

Viñedos y Bodegas García Figuero Tinto Figuero Noble Cosecha 2017(15%) Planted in 1950, the Parcela de Torrosillo is the source of this single vineyard expression, which combines chalk and red clay soils. Matured in new French oak, as the top Tinto Figuero wines always are, this is a ferrous, complex, somewhat backward red with assertive but well-integrated wood, lots of inky fruit and enough supporting acidity to freshen and lengthen the finish. 2023-32

Dominio del Aguila Blanco Cosecha 2018(13%) Jorge Monzón and Isabel Rodero's Albillo Mayor is one of Spain's greatest whites. Think of it as a cross between a Jura Vin Jaune and a Viña Tondonia Blanco from Rioja in style. Nutty, salty yet produced without a veil of flor yeast, it's a subtly wooded delight, showing old vine concentration and the leesy, waxy, oxidative complexity that comes from a two-year fermentation without added sulphur. 2022-28

Magna Vides Alba Vides Cosecha 2016(12.5%) I reviewed the 2018 vintage of this wine last year, but am more than happy to include the 2016 here. Made from a field blend of Albillo Mayor with 10% Alarije, Jaén and Rojal, it's a sublime 50% new barrel-fermented white from La Aguilera. Chalky, taut and stony with impressive acidity for a Ribera white, some vanilla top notes, thrilling focus and zip and Chablis-like acidity. 2021-25

Tr3smano Albillo Mayor Cosecha 2020(15%) A significant step up on the 2019 release, partly because malolactic fermentation was blocked to retain acidity, this varietal Albillo Mayor hails from 60-to-100-year-old vines in Olmedillo and La Aguilera. Fermented and aged in new French oak for nine months, it has lovely minerality and struck match reduction, notes of hay and white flowers and a chiselled, tapering finish. One of Ribera's best whites. 2022-26

Bodegas Félix Callejo El Lebrero Cosecha 2020(14%) The Callejo family have been making a pure Albillo Mayor since 2012, but it's only in the last two years that it has been able to call itself a Ribera del Duero. This comes from two high-altitude parcels - La Virgen and El Lebrero itself - and is fermented in concrete eggs, larger oak and stainless steel, with around a third of the blend seeing skin contact. Spicy and perfumed, with vanilla top notes, chalky freshness, some cream and orange peel and good underlying structure. 2022-26

Dominio del Pidio Albillo Mayor Cosecha 2020(13.5%) "Bits and pieces of vineyards" is how Óscar Aragon describes the sources of this outstanding Albillo Mayor from parcels between 40 and 80 years of age. Barrel-fermented in new French oak, it's always among the best expressions of the grape in Ribera del Duero, showing stony reduction, citrus and pear flavours and a dusting of baking spices. Textured and long. 2021-25

This report is dedicated to the memory of two great figures in the history of Ribera del Duero, both of whom died earlier this year: Alejandro Fernández, the founder of Tinto Pesquera, and Agustín Alonso, the technical director of the Consejo Regulador. I like to think that both of them would have enjoyed reading it.

I would like to thank Pablo Baquera and Alicia Fernández of the Consejo Regulador, who organised my trip and drove me around the region for 11 days. I couldn’t hope for two better or more enthusiastic companions. Ribera is lucky to have them.
