Sewage spills into rivers and dams have a major impact on not only the health of people and animals, they are also a great threat to the eco system. The Bloem Spruit in Mangaung, which flows past Rudolf Greyling Drive, has been pointed out by a concerned resident as a possible sewage spill allegedly flowing into nearby rivers and dams.

Upon visiting the site, Bloemfontein Courant was greeted by an unbearable smell. Brown sewage-like water could be seen flowing into the spruit, which was filled with dark, murky water. Sewage spilled into river systems can cause a health hazard for the city as it may increase the risk of residents contracting illness due to bacteria and viruses present in sewage effluent. According to a finding by “how stuff works” the bacteria in human waste, such as E.coli, can infect the water and cause disease. Other harmful solids and chemicals in

sewage can damage bodies of water that support wildlife. The solids in sewage also cause water to appear dark and murky, which also affects the ability of fish to breathe and see around them.

It is alleged that the water flowing into the Bloem Spruit could be domestic sewage containing a wide variety of dissolved and suspended impurities such as organic materials and plant nutrients which tend to rot. Domestic sewage originates primarily from kitchen, bathroom and laundry sources. It also includes waste from food preparation, dishwashing, garbage-grinding, toilets, baths, showers and sinks.

According to the Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson, Larry Crisp, the Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement (CME) sub-directorate in the Department of Water and Sanitation has been conducting site inspections at the Bloem Spruit Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) for compliance purposes and to ensure the water resources are protected from pollution. Crisp told the

publication that CME had issued letters, including a Non Compliance and a Notice, as a directive to the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality with regard to poor operations and maintenance at the plant.

“CME also conducted a site inspection on 11 November 2019 as a routine compliance monitoring inspection and the plant was still poorly managed and no improvement had been observed with regard to the operations and maintenance of the plant. Most of the facilities at the plant are not operational, especially phase two of the plant, which has been completely shut down due to non-functional units,” Crisp said.

He also told Bloemfontein Courant that sewage overflows pose health hazards to both surface and groundwater resources and it compromises the right to a healthy environment. “The Department of Water and Sanitation always pleads with residence to be careful around water resources and to not swim in rivers and streams,” Crisp added.

Poor maintenance leading to pollution of our rivers?

Opposition to call for Bloem Zoo closure

Mangaung Metro Municipality’s response

The Bloemfontein Zoo has become a hot topic in recent days after a petition to close it down was launched last week. The petition presently has over 16 000 signatures from residents who would like the zoo to be closed once and for all. However, some residents expressed concern over the call to shut down the well-known local attraction.

According to the online petition there are concerns over the welfare of the animals exhibited at the zoo. “We as the Bloemfontein community call for the Municipal Manager to take action in the closing of the Bloemfontein zoo due to lack of maintenance, management and care of the animals. The animals should be transferred to another zoo,” it stated.

Courant paid a visit to the Bloemfontein Zoo on Wednesday to observe conditions of the zoo itself but especially of the animals. Although the visit was unannounced, we found the animals at their feeding time. Many of them were in the shade to keep cool during the intense heat. However, there was litter on some parts of the grounds and overgrown empty enclosures.

Mangaung Metro Municipality spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, stated

that a new services provider for cleaning the zoo will be appointed in the future. There are also plans to revamp old structures at the zoo. “The processes to contract a service provider for the cleaning of the gardens, cutting grass, etc., is at an advanced stage. Plans are also currently underway to maintain and repair some of the old structures and facilities within the zoo.

Ablution facilities are a priority and will be addressed,” he said.

“There are service providers who have been appointed to provide food for the animals, so the animals are being cared for and have enough food and water. Visitors might not see most of the water sources in the enclosures because such is best placed for the animals inside the sleeping quarters,”

added Khedama. Resident Etienne Botha who visited the

zoo last week as a result of the petition, expressed that fellow Bloemfontein citizens should see the conditions of the animals for themselves before calling for a shut down. “I do agree with the petition that some of the cages are overgrown and that the park is not as clean as it could be but for most part the dirty cages are empty and the animals all look good,” he explained.

“Before we start closing the zoo, might I ask that everyone who signed the petition go and have a look for themselves as to what the conditions are that might cause the zoo to receive the funds they need. You might have a fantastic day out as well,” he added.

Khedama explained that many of the animals keep out of sight in order to avoid the hot weather but there are plans to fill the empty enclosures. “Due to the heat waves animals do not willingly come out of the sleeping quarters, hence visitors deemed that there are no animals. The City is looking into other best practices to ensure cooler environments for the animals,” he said.

“There are also plans to obtain more animals, which will fill some of the empty enclosures. This, however, can only be done when the temperatures are lower,” Khedama said.

“Regarding Bloemspruit Waste Water Treatment Works, there is no recent Non Compliance letter that we have received from the Department of Water and Sanitation regarding the poor operations at Bloem Spruit as alluded to in Courant’s query. The last Non Compliance letter that we received was for an inspection done in December 2018. The City’s water and sanitation sub-directorate has not seen a directive that has been given to us by the Department of Water and Sanitation.

We had a series of break-ins at the plant at some point, which even resulted in cable theft that affected the operations at the plant. Since then, the necessary security support was provided and there hasn’t been any security breach in the whole of 2019 in Bloem Spruit Waste Water Works. Those cables that were stolen were replaced and the operations for the whole of the year have generally

been smooth; except for the sludge handling where we have a challenge regarding the digesters that are not fully operational. The plant is operating with spare capacity and the challenge is not as amplified as it was in the past when there was a stench that affected residents of Heidedal and surrounding areas. This challenge was addressed with the load taken off Bloem Spruit Waste Water Works by the new North East Waste Water Works.

The plant is not performing as it should and from time to time we do not discharge water that is compliant but generally there is compliance to general standards even though the City has cash flow challenges. These have led to the division not being privy to get the required resources needed to properly operate and maintain the plant. The plant is operational and the effluent that is discharged to the stream is complaint.

Our sanitation department does experience frequent blockages with the same point of manhole due to high volume of foreign objects intrusion, e.g. massive cow dung , blood, horns from neighbouring business sites discharging directly to municipal sewer network. The blockage is one of an abnormal operational situation that the municipality has to handle at frequent occasions due to the misuse of the network. As part of solutions to the matter, internal measures are in place where the Engineering Services directorate undertakes awareness to main contributors of this abnormal situation. In addition, the directorate also does awareness programmes with the community to also make sure that people are notified of the dangers of throwing foreign objects in the streams, dams and rivers.” - Qondile Khedama, GM Communications.

“Alles is moontlik.

Teen creates sugar-free candyfloss for diabeticsMorgan Pelser, a Bloemfontein teen, not only has a savvy mind for business but she also has a heart of gold. Pelser started a candyfloss business at the age of 11 to make extra cash. However, it was after a diabetic friend was unable to taste her cotton-like treat that she was inspired to create sugar-free candyfloss, especially for those who suffer from the disease.

According to the 16-year-old, the sweet treat is made from a sweetener that is a form of sugar alcohols suitable for diabetics. “It’s so amazing to me that we were able to make it because candyfloss is literally just sugar. So to be able to make something that is viable for people who can’t eat sugar, is amazing,” said Pelser.

She explained the process of creating the sugar-free version of candyfloss, which is an even more volatile product than the original. “We worked with the Food and Beverage Institute where we were able to mix everything. We were able to create a version that would not cause a spike in the blood sugar levels of diabetics. We can’t make big quantities of it because when you make it, it has to be consumed within a day,” said

Pelser.Morgan’s Sugar-Free Candyfloss

is made throughout November, Diabetes Awareness Month, and over the past few weeks they have sold about 500 tubs of the sweet stuff to patients. “We have been distributing to hospitals. It’s so cool to see a child taste candyfloss for the first time when they have never experienced anything like that before,” expressed Pelser.

Although she has been making candyfloss for about five years, Pelser was inspired to create the sugar-free version to allow a close friend to

enjoy the treat as well. “My business partner and I entered a competition and throughout that time we made a lot of candyfloss but I noticed later that her sister never tasted any,” she explained. “It struck me as really sad as I imagined all the birthdays and other events where she missed out on the sweet treats. So we decided to make an innovative product, which actually won us competition,” added Pelser.

Unisa produces its first PhD graduate in Setswana

Dr Justice Kobue Legodi

The first University of South Africa (Unisa) student, Dr Justice Kobue Legodi, has recently graduated after obtaining a PhD in Setswana. His doctoral thesis applied cultural semiotics to analyse the process and significance of the cultural portioning of beasts of slaughter, drawing comparisons with similar practices elsewhere in the world.

His particular foci were indigenous knowledge and its significance and customs; how these are transferred to the next generation; and the scientific and psychological knowledge of the Batswana people. This approach reflects Legodi’s belief that students understand better when they are taught in their mother tongue or another indigenous language.

“When doing research in indigenous languages, the meanings and scientific concepts are not distorted, nor is the cultural aspect lost. If education is transmitted into indigenous languages, solutions are easily found and new concepts are revealed without delay. When I was doing research in Setswana, I noticed that the data remained original and that the scientific vocabulary in Setswana expanded. This made it all the more interesting and inviting to do further research,” explained Legodi.

One of the challenges confronting Legodi was the shortage of written sources, even at institutions such as the National House of Traditional Leaders and the Department of Arts and Culture. Unable to find publications

or archival materials which aligned with his research topic, he had to resort to using old historical documents in addition to visiting different villages, traditional leaders and elders to collect data.

Legodi’s supervisor, Professor Daniel Matjila from African Languages at Unisa, described him as a committed and cooperative student who has always kept in touch with his supervisors but mainly worked independently, which allowed him to complete his PhD in three years. Prior to that, Legodi obtained a master’s degree in Setswana, which focused on the semiotics of movement and the kinesthetics of Setswana traditional dances.

“Legodi’s research contributes to new knowledge and expands the horizons of research in Setswana. It is pioneering in that it explores a long-neglected field of Setswana and African cultural practices that should be approached as forms of communication that articulate significant cultural messages,” said Matjila.

Legodi expressed his pride at being the first candidate to complete a PhD in Setswana at Unisa, and encouraged others to pursue research in their respective indigenous languages. He believes that such academic endeavours serve to enrich cultures and languages, and help to make the outside world more aware of the scientific knowledge and concepts which indigenous languages contribute to diverse fields of study.

Musician and businessman, Dj Sbu, who was in Bloemfontein on Tuesday to interact with residents and tell them more about #Mofaya. PHOTO: PIERCE VAN HEERDEN

Popular DJ visits BloemfonteinMusician and businessman, Dj Sbu, promises South Africans major moves in 2020, as he frequently receives requests from locals to grow his Mofaya brand. Bloemfontein Courant met up with Dj Sbu at TFS Wholesalers on Tuesday, where he was celebrating with residents the energy drink that is sold at TFS Wholesalers nationwide. He said that the Mofaya brand decided to take hands with TFS Wholesalers as they have the same vision, namely to always give back to the community.

Dj Sbu expressed the importance of giving back to the communities that we come from and also always supporting local brands first. He said that he formed a foundation about 11 years ago that helps out in schools by giving bursaries, feeding schemes and inspiring learners to want to do better. Eventually the non-profit organisation decided that it would no longer ask government to fund it but would rather raise its own money and that is how the energy drink, Mofaya, took off. He said how he decided on an energy drink because he comes from the entertainment industry which offers little to no sleep and he was consuming energy drinks on a daily basis until one day his mentors said to him “if you spend too much on it, then own it”.

He told Bloemfontein Courant that people in the townships feel the same way about the energy drink as South Africans felt when South Africa won the World Cup. “I sort of feel that I have been nominated to be the leader of this brand but I don’t own it because it belongs to the people.” He encouraged every individual to tap into a “side hustle” and to create more proudly South African brands.

Having an “escape artist” for a pet can be challenging and with the holidays right at our doorstep, Bloemfontein Courant called in the professionals for some tips to keep your four-legged children safe.

Most of these animal lovers agree that lighting up the night sky with fireworks can be a beautiful display for us as humans but can be horrible for our pets. Fireworks, thunderstorms and owners going on holiday are seen as the main causes of lost or stray animals over the holidays.

Manager and senior inspector of the Bloemfontein Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Reinet Meyer, told the publication that the December and January period is the busiest time at any SPCA and they are usually inundated with stray and injured animals.

“It is traumatic for the animals to get lost, suddenly finding themselves in traffic with cars surrounding them. Sometimes people try to catch these animals out of the goodness of their hearts, and then the animals start running from fear and end up getting hit by a car. It is really bad as they can be terribly injured or even die,” said Meyer.

According to her the SPCA will always take in a stray and take care of it. She pleads with the public to try and pick up a stray and bring it to them. “We plead with the public to put their animals in an animal hotel for the period that they are away or to get a responsible person to stay with the animals 24 hours a day. Just having someone there for an hour or two a day is not good enough. So much can happen in the other 23 hours of the day.”

Meyer also told Bloemfontein Courant that it is important for the public to know that it is against the law to shoot fireworks and a person can be given

a heavy fine. “We would like to ask the public to rather stay home on New Year’s Eve with their animals and keep them in the house. They can even play some quiet music. Also, get your pets a meal they can eat and try to distract them.” She also suggests that pet owners keep doors and windows closed so the sound doesn’t affect the animals that much. They can even get sedative pills from the SPCA or a veterinarian to give to the animals before neighbours or other people in the vicinity start shooting fireworks illegally.

Remove sex education, demands new group

Lauren Evanthia

How to register for your 2019 matric results

In under two weeks, nearly 60 000 people joined a Facebook group called #LeaveOurKidsAlone, expressing their concerns and calling for a total stop to Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in schools.

The group currently has over 82 000 members who are parents, teachers, principals and schools who oppose the current “graphically explicit” and planned sex education in the Life Orientation curriculum for grades 4 to 12 learners.

The members believe the government should completely remove sex education from the curriculum.

Lauren Evanthia, founder of the group, believes that sex education is acceptable in high school when the learner is at least 16 years old and that they receive an optional class (with parental consent) on the risks of being sexually active.

She believes the government is overstepping its mandate and interfering.

“We have a massive void across the country, and I see it in the political work I do. In all the lower income communities the number one complaint is that the youth have nothing to do and nowhere to go.

“If our government listened to the people they would know that and focus on community upliftment instead of adopting a devious programme that will break down our society even further.”

The step she’s taking to stop CSE in schools currently is by spreading awareness across the country and ensuring that parents are aware of the curriculum and read all the scripted

lesson plans that the Department of Basic Education has released.

Thereafter it is up to parents to decide if they are for or against sex-education and CSE being in the curriculum. Instead of teaching sex education, Lauren and the members of the group believe that the government should focus on alleviating poverty and improving and beautifying lower income communities.

They believe the Department of Education should rather spend money on uplifting schools across the country, ensuring children have well-kept school grounds, well-equipped classrooms and teachers with a true passion to teach the next generation.

In addition, Evanthia believes the government needs to invest more money in sport, arts and culture so that the youth can spend their time on pursuits that teach discipline and values of excellence.

Paul Colditz, CEO of the Federation of Associations of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (Fedsas) says they have been receiving calls and emails from parents, religious groups and schools expressing their concerns about the curriculum.

“As Fedsas, we have a direct interest in what happens in schools. The government was supposed to have initially consulted with Fedsas and expertss before introducing the new curriculum”. He suggests the government needs to stop it and follow a thorough process. Fedsas met with the Department of Education on 27 November 2019 to discuss the new curriculum.

Mosupatsela FM goes digitalThe 19-year-old Botshabelo-based community station has gone digital form analog, after using the loveLife Youth Centre’s kitchen as a temporary studio.

Station Manager, Jowane Fubane, said working at loveLife was not easy at all, because the listeners could hear everything that was happening at the youth centre in background. “However, we are happy to say, that episode belongs in the past. We were lucky enough to have received a donation from the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) for a multimillion rand digital studio, which is sound proof and has quality production facilities. We are extremely grateful towards the MDDA for this state-of-the-art studio, because it will boost the morale of the presenters who have been complaining about the quality of production.

“They felt it was not listener-friendly as everything that was happening in the background could be heard by the listeners. But today we are happy that we were not left behind when it comes to technology. The technicians already came to show us how everything works. We are slowly but surely getting the hang of it.”

Pulane Makatse, Mosupatsela FM’s news editor, is just as happy about the new digital

studio. “Christmas came early for us this year and we are grateful for this wonderful gift. When we were using the loveLife kitchen it was difficult because even when our visitors started their cars, the listeners at home could hear it. However, the new studio has boosted our morale to do our job and our dignity is back.”

Freemasons operational in Bfn for past 154 yearsThe Freemasons is an organisation which is over 300 years old. It has had a presence in Bloemfontein for over 154 years and stands as “a force of good, making good men better”.

According to a Freemason, the organisation is a fraternity or brotherhood which teaches lessons of life and moral values with the aid of “plays/lessons” which are performed to the new members. The Freemasons usually meet once a month, where they discuss various topics and charities which they support. The meetings are formal and teach moral lessons in the form of a ritual. “We are a non-religious, non-political and non-racial organisation that performs charity works and which has assisted many organisations in the city,” a member who wants to remain anonymous, told Bloemfontein Courant.

He added that the members are very proud of their membership and have in the past had men such as President Brand and President Reitz from the Old Orange Free State Republic attend their meetings.

Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a British writer who created the character Sherlock Holmes, attended one of their meetings in 1900.

He further explained that all the symbols in their buildings have significance, for example the G that hangs in the middle of the building represents God, who watches over them. To be considered for membership, a person must believe in God and have the desire to become a better person. “We cannot accept atheists,” he said. On the question of which charities they have supported, he answered that recently their Grand Lodge in England has donated money towards the floods in England and locally to the Jean Webber House and Lebone Children’s Home.

They do have ‘open’ days, and invite members of the public to come and visit them and ask questions. They will be having an open day at 19:00 on 3 December 2019. For more information, an email can be sent to: [email protected].

Staying safe online on Black Friday

Carey van Vlaanderen, CEO at ESET South Africa.

If you’re opting for online this Black Friday instead of facing the queues at your favourite department store, you may escape the incessant festive tunes and all that pushing and shoving in the aisles and at the doors but please remember, shopping online presents a host of risks to your online safety. Indeed, some of that frenzy on Black Friday and Cyber Monday can extend to the internet, especially as all that bargain-hunting can cause you to let your guard down, says Carey van Vlaanderen, CEO at ESET South Africa, an internet security company that offers anti-virus and firewall products.

In fact, many people openly admit to taking risks at the prospect of a deal, however too-good-to-be-true it may sound, meaning there are a lot of potential victims who are apt to expose themselves to a range of threats that typically aim to capture their financial information. Indeed, for phishers and scammers, this is no more challenging than shooting phish in a barrel.

Let’s look at how they might attempt to trip you up, and what you can do to avoid stumbling:

We need to ensure that all our shopping takes place at legitimate and tried-and-tested sites. This involves basic precautions, including being wary of odd URLs and staying away from “merchants” offering suspiciously cheap items such as the latest iPhone for a fraction of its going price, as well as from the sites offering “customer support” on free email services such as Gmail.

Additionally, we need to be double wary of – and never click on any links or attachments in – out-of-the-blue emails, instant messages or social media postings that invariably offer amazing bargains, freebies in exchange for completing “surveys”, and similar unmissable offers playing on our fear of, well, missing out.

Pop-up and banner ads that parasitize well-known brands, as well as malicious adverts loaded by legitimate websites from third-party services and possibly even targeted at specific demographics (much as genuine ads would be), can all lead us to malware-hosting websites or to bogus sites that are designed to steal our personal details. Instead of rushing to click on whatever “deal” is on offer, you’re better off typing the retailer’s URL into the browser’s address bar and verifying that

the bargain is authentic. Such typing may not be without risks

of its own, however. When typing the domain in your browser’s address bar, do your best not to mistype it. Otherwise you may inadvertently end up on a domain with a name that is confusingly similar to that of the legitimate and well-known web destination, but whose only purpose is to inflict harm on unsuspecting visitors. This malicious type of URL hijacking, also known as typosquatting, is commonplace.

Similarly, as we ramp up our search for sale items, we can reach unintended destinations when attackers poison search engine results with deceptive links. These may lead to dedicated Black Friday and Cyber Monday sites; dedicated, that is, to scamming you. Try instead to search for

deals directly on the websites of reputable retailers.

Once on the merchant’s site – and before you input your personal and payment details – ensure that the site uses HTTPS web encryption, so that all the information that passes between your browser and the website is encrypted and prying eyes can’t see and interfere with it. The encryption will be indicated by a padlock icon to the left of the browser’s URL bar that, upon clicking, will also indicate that your connection to the site is secure.

In addition, it pays to be very picky about the Internet Connection that you use for your shopping spree. It’s best to stick to your home or work network, or alternatively to your data plan. Under

no circumstances is it a good idea to connect to a public Wi-Fi network for your shopping, as many of them are unsafe.

In conclusion, let’s remember to stick to what are, in fact, some of the fundamental cyber-hygiene practices that will help you avoid nasty surprises while you do all that power shopping.

• Keep your operating system and applications updated with the latest security patches.

• Use reputable security software that incorporates multiple layers of protection.

• Utilise complex and unique passwords or passphrases, especially for your most valuable accounts.

“Ek speel ook soms ou bekende musiek in my eie styl, maar my voorland is oorspronklike liedjies.

Belinda bring unieke ervaring MeloGenic takes music scene by storm

‘The year of the butterfly’ for you and old

Thapelo Thlokomelo, better known as MeloGenic

Members of the House of Dirty Shakers during a recent rehearsal.

Thapelo Thlokomelo, better known as MeloGenic, a young aspiring musician born in Bethlehem and currently based in Bloemfontein, recently shot to stardom when he appeared an opening act for South African heavyweight hip hop artists such as Nasty-C and Emtee during the lvyson Tour in Johannesburg.

MeloGenic considers it a great milestone in his career to be an opening act for such big names. “It felt good to perform before them and was a great experience for me as a young artist to showcase my talent. This has opened up doors for me as I am in such a good space right now, more than ever before,” he said.

MeloGenic has also recently dropped a seven-track extended play album, titled Before the Glory, which has the people of Mangaung on their toes. Although the EP, released in May, did exceptionally well to get more than 10 000 streamings, MeloGenic felt the music didn’t get the hype it deserves.

“However, I also

released a 14-track project, titled The Extraordinary Kid Tape, which sold 2000 copies independently and is really doing good digitally. I believe my music is made for those who are working hard to be great one day, basically telling them to never give up,” MeloGenic added.

He also makes music about the challenges he went through growing up. Some of his songs are featured in the soundtrack of the movie Silent cries and the Cult which has been aired on M-Net and Mzantsi Magic.

Residents, young and old, who want to end off the year in a spectacular manner, enjoying dance and entertainment, can do so with a production from the House of Dirty Shakers, in collaboration with Pacofs. The Year of the Butterfly is a contemporary dance show which offers more than beautiful choreography.

“There are four stages to becoming a butterfly. We took those stages and incorporated them into the stages of a human being’s life in the form of the dancers in the company. We implemented them from situations in their lives, in their

struggles, their ups and downs and the daily struggles all of us in the company encounter,” explained director, Zane Muller.

The show is directed by Zane Muller, produced by House of Dirty Shakers and choreographed by Teddy B. the dancers include Boipelo Monnamorwe, Wendy Moloi, Elrico Plaaitjies, Mpai Thekiso and Teddy B Mhlambi.

“They came in about four to five years ago, innocent, young and wanting to take a risk in the arts. And now that some of them are done studying, it’s time for the butterfly to fly. The butterfly must decide: am I climbing the corporate ladder, am I still pursuing arts, what is this butterfly going to do because

I’ve got my wings, I’ve been groomed for four years and I’m ready to take on the world,” added Muller.

“We wanted to do something different, hence we wanted to speak and connect with the audience and that is why we took the stories of our own lives and basically illustrated them through movement. The audience can expect intense choreography, very dramatic, but also enjoyable, something for young and old, something that everyone can relate to,” said Muller.

The production will be showcased at the André Huguenet Theatre from 4 till 6 December 2019, at 19:00. Tickets cost R50 and are available at Pacofs.

Olebogeng Mashune has been announced as sixth Free State regional winner in the 2019 SME Toolkit BUSINESS/PARTNERS Business Plan Competition for Aspiring Young Entrepreneurs. She won the award for her business plan to start an agro-processing business called Mashune Agrico Trade.

Raised on a farm, Mashune said she is passionate about farming and agro-processing. “I learnt everything I know about the industry from my grandfather and have since inherited some agricultural land from him. I am planning to start my own agro-processing business,” she said.

“In its 10th year now, the SME Toolkit BUSINESS/PARTNERS Business Plan Competition aims to promote South African entrepreneurship among individuals between the ages of 18 and 35 by bridging the gap between simply having an idea, to actually launching a start-up business,” said Petro Bothma, Group Enterprise Development Manager at Business Partners Limited and

Programme Manager for SME Toolkit South Africa. This year the competition received 1 010 entries from young entrepreneurs across the country and ten regional winners have been selected.

As part of the free-to-enter competition, Mashune joined

other entrepreneurs by taking part in one of the regional business workshops on the intricacies of compiling a business plan and managing the many functions of running a business such as business management, marketing, financial management and legal requirements. Following the workshop, each entrant was invited to submit a complete business plan to the competition judging panel.

“Mashune was chosen as the Free State winner because her business plan stood out in terms of presentation, content and potential viability of the business,” said Bothma.

Each regional winner is awarded with a mentorship support voucher to the value of R10 000, introduced to valuable business networking opportunities to assist them with growing their fledgling businesses, and will go through as a finalist to the third and final phase of the competition, Bothma added.“My hope is to become

employed by my own business full time so that I can ensure its growth, with my long-term goal being to expand into the continent of Africa,” concluded

Mashune.

Die vraag is dus, hoe veilig is my geld in ’n effektetrustfonds en sal my belange beskerm word? An die antwoord: ja, jy is veilig in ’n effektetrustfonds.

Nissan Micra 1,0T Tekna PlusJOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Looking for

a B-segment hatchback? Well, you’re positively spoilt for choice at the moment.

In years gone by, C-segment hatches seemed to be the go-to purchases but that’s no longer the case, thanks in part to the continued rise of the crossover. However, smaller offerings, such as Volkswagen’s Polo, are seemingly as popular as ever in South Africa. And, in a bid to take advantage of this, Nissan SA has expanded its Micra line-up to accommodate those yearning for a bit more zest and luxury.

The three new variants (featuring Acenta Plus, Tekna and Tekna Plus trim) employ the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s turbocharged 1,0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, delivering 84 kW and 180 Nm of torque (with an additional 20 Nm on tap via an overboost feature). Those figures represent fair increases over the 66 kW and 140 Nm offered by the 898 cc unit employed by models lower in the range.

The new engine sends its oomph to the front wheels by means of a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. Demand for an automatic transmission in this segment is increasing and

Nissan SA has confirmed it’s working on a self-shifting option for this powertrain. In addition, the new derivatives feature sports suspension, lowering the ride height by some 10 mm.

After sampling the flagship model (which will set you back R336 900), I was quite impressed by the number of standard features included. Luxuries such as LED headlamps, keyless entry, a 360-degree parking cameras, leather upholstery, blind-spot monitoring and a Bose Personal sound system work together to create a properly premium small hatch experience.

The Bose sound system is definitely the highlight of the package, thanks to the two “UltraNearField” speakers fitted to the driver’s headrest. That said, it’s unfortunate the passenger doesn’t also enjoy this unique feature. While the speaker package is comprehensive, I was a bit disappointed that the delivery of the audio was not quite as refined as that of Bose systems used in, for instance, Mazda’s products (this after a sound test with a FLAC audio file demonstrated a hint of reverb).

In terms of perceived quality, the high-spec Micra’s cabin feels right up there with the

best in the segment. The texture of the leather and plastics feels premium, and the fit and finish solid. Interestingly, however, the air-conditioning system’s minimum temperature setting is a fairly lofty 18 degrees. Not ideal on a scorching day in Johannesburg.

Using the outgoing Renault Clio’s platform as a base, the Micra is still an enjoyable car to pilot, while that new sports suspension and the fairly weighty electrically assisted power steering system add a further degree of excitement. In terms of handling, the small hatch feels refreshingly enthusiastic, thanks in part at least to its set of grippy Bridgestone Turanza tyres. Overall, the vehicle offers an impressive mix of stability and comfort through the suburbia and on highways.

The new 1,0-litre engine, however, doesn’t quite match the verve of the chassis (the 88 kW 1,2-litre four-cylinder engine used in the Clio GT-Line launched back in 2017 felt far stronger, for instance). While this latest three-cylinder unit is fairly refined, it struggles somewhat with turbo-lag, forcing the driver to rev the engine harder than is ideal in order to make decent progress. In addition, the hill-

start assist function feels unusually intrusive, holding the vehicle in place a fraction longer than it needs to, thus making for a sometimes awkward take-off.

While the B-segment certainly is certainly bustling at the moment, it’s interesting to note there aren’t many hot hatches playing in this part of the market. Nissan’s MR16DDT turbocharged 1,6-litre engine (used in the fourth-generation Renault Clio RS) would be the perfect powerplant to push the Micra into this performance territory, particularly with a six-speed manual gearbox fitted. Something like this would make a great successor to the 1988 Nissan Micra Super Turbo and put smiles on the faces of enthusiasts. One can only dream...

Regardless of my hot hatch fantasies, I will say this: while the new engine isn’t quite as perky as I had hoped, these latest well-equipped additions to the local Micra range serve to broaden the line-up’s appeal, offering further choice to the many consumers considering vehicles in this segment. And that’s surely only a good thing for buyers...

Having a baby can be wonderful, but it is also expensive. Marlies Kappers, chief marketing officer at financial services provider, DirectAxis, says it’s difficult and probably not that helpful to work out an average cost, because expectant parents’ circumstances and choices differ so much, but it’ll probably be more than you think.

When you’re dealing with the excitement of finding out you’re pregnant and trying to remember all the people you need to tell and the millions of things you’ll have to do before the baby arrives, budgeting may not be at the top of your list. Together with some other moms at DirectAxis she put together this list of suggestions to help soon-to-be parents budget for a baby.

Do the maths: Having a baby will definitely add to your expenses and often reduce your income. If both parents work, you may lose some or all of one parent’s income when the baby arrives.

Once you know what the household income will be, you’ll be in a better position to draw up a baby-friendly budget. To find out more about budgeting click https://www.directaxis.co.za/make-a-plan/understanding-money.

When you start budgeting, remember the expenses begin before the baby is born. For example, you’ll need maternity clothes and to prepare the nursery. A suggestion is to update your budget each trimester.

Feather the nest: start saving, ideally when you start trying for a baby or at least as soon as you find out you’re pregnant.

Open a bank account, such as a tax-free savings account, and put away as much money as you can afford each month.

Shop smartly: don’t leave everything to the last minute. Not only will this mean having to spend a lot of money at once, rather than spreading the costs over nine months, but chances are you’ll forget something important or buy things you don’t really need. Instead, do your research. There’s plenty of information for expectant mothers online.

Kovsies wil sake regstel by USSA-week

Ontong en Njeya kraai koning in Trail-reeks

Paulina Njeya FOTO: MORGAN PIEK
