QUALITY & RELIABILITY

Motion Sensor/Sleep Recovery Triggers

• The main unit includes a motion sensor designed to reduce the perceived waitingtime for the device to recover from sleep mode. The device is able to detect anapproaching user, intelligently predict the user’s intent, and recover from sleepmode accordingly. Likewise, the device predicts when the user is finished usingthe device and returns to sleep mode. Three sensitivity settings are available tosuit varying operating environments and, if preferred, the motion sensor sleeptrigger can be turned off entirely allowing the device to transition to and fromsleep mode like predecessor models.

• Several new sleep mode recovery triggers have also been added. These includeinserting a USB, placing an original in the ADF, opening the platen cover, andloading paper into the multi-purpose tray.

Easy Consumable Replacement with Video Guidance

• Select common maintenance procedures are simplified with live-action videodemonstrations of how to replace consumables like toner and staple cartridgesas well as how to clean the platen glass. Live-action videos for waste tonercontainer and drum replacement are also available when activated via servicemode. Animations provide simple instructions on clearing paper jams and closingthe cover, using enhanced full-motion animation, to help the user see where tocomplete the necessary task.

SUSTAINABILITY

With features to help reduce waste, technology designed to lower energy consumptionand limit emissions, and the use of bio-based plastics, the Third GenerationimageRUNNER ADVANCE Series is designed to help support customers' sustainabilitygoals.

Sleep mode improvements and auto shutdown functions have been added to helpachieve low power consumption. As with Previous Generations, the Third GenerationimageRUNNER ADVANCE Series models are EPEAT-rated and ENERGY STARcertified.

Energy Efficiency

• The imageRUNNER ADVANCE is designed for high energy efficiency and stellarperformance. The combination of fusing technologies and low-melting-pointtoner helps contribute to lower overall energy consumption by minimizing powerrequirements and reducing energy use during warm-up and while in stand-bymode.

Remote Shutdown/Weekly Timer

• Administrators can schedule to shut down these devices when there are periodswhen they will not be in use. By turning off the devices during holidays or overthe weekend, it helps save energy consumption. It allows administrators toinstruct the main unit to enter sleep mode specified intervals, or a specificday/time. Activation of this settingmust be turned on in Service Mode.

32

SUSTAINABILITY

Reduction of CO2 Emissions

• Through its Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) System, Canon has lowered CO2 emissions byfocusing on each stage of the product life cycle, including manufacturing, energy use, andlogistics. The products are designed to be small and light, with less packaging to maketransportation more efficient.

All Second and Third GenerationimageRUNNER ADVANCE models are rated inEPEAT, the definitive global registry for greener

electronics.

The imageRUNNER ADVANCE models aredesigned for low energy consumption. Eachmodel meets ENERGY STAR® standards.

100% Recycled Plastics

• Plastic recycling technology first grinds recovered plastics and then facilitates therecovery strength and flame retardance. 100% recycled plastics developed bythis technology are made from 100% recycled plastics only, and no new plasticsare included. These plastics are also UL 94 V-0 rated, the second highest flameretardant rating, and are used for an internal section of the product. Whencompared with new plastics, 100% recycled plastics promise a reduction of CO2emissions by about 90 percent.

Resource Preservation

• The imageRUNNER ADVANCE Series incorporates innovative, eco-conscioussolutions that propel your business and help to reduce your environmentalfootprint.

• Bio-based plastics originate from plants, which contain carbon that they haveabsorbed from the atmosphere. When these plastics are discarded andprocessed at the end of the product’s life, the absorbed CO2 is re-introduced tothe atmosphere. This is preferred over fossil-based plastics, which introduce newCO2 to the atmosphere.

• The parts such as buttons on the control panel, and the button of staple ondemand with which users frequently come into contact are made of bio-basedplastics.

Toner Container Collection Program (Plastic Toner Containers)

• To contribute towards the reduction of landfill waste, Canon has introduced acollection and recycling program for Canon plastic toner containers. UnlikeCanon’s all-in-one cartridges, these toner containers are made mainly of plasticmaterial making local recycling and local energy recovery possible. When localrecycling is utilized environmental impacts associated with the transportation ofcontainers are reduced.

• When Canon plastic toner containers cannot be recycled locally or sent to a localenergy recovery facility that accepts #7 plastic. Canon asks that customers shipthem to the address below at their expense. Once received by our facility, Canonassumes the responsibility and cost for recycling to keep Canon toner containersfrom going into landfills.

• To support local recycling and energy recovery, Canon has engraved a plasticresin code on each container. Canon toner particles and plastic toner containersare safe for local recycling and local energy recovery facilities.

Toner Bottle Replacement program

• Canon explores methods to minimize the environmental impact of its productsthroughout their life cycle and to help promote research and development whichcontribute to environmental sustainability. In 1990, Canon introduced a cartridge-recycling program for all-in-one laser beam printer toner cartridges (better knownas the Clean Earth Campaign Program). The goal of this program is to generateless landfill waste by reusing parts, recycling materials and employing energyrecovery. Canon was the first company to collect used all-in-one toner cartridges. The toner cartridges collected by Canon from around the world during the period1990-2013 weigh a total of some 328,000 metric tons.
