The happiness and dignity of man

I admit consists in the practice of

private virtues, and to this he is

stimulated by the rewards

promised to such conduct. In this

he acts for himself, and with a

view of promoting his own

particular welfare.

Carter Braxton

In all our associations; in all ouragreements let us never lose sightof this fundamental maxim — thatall power was originally lodgedin, and consequently is derivedfrom, the people.

George Mason

The principal capacity of a freegovernment is to be derived fromthe sound morals and intelligenceof the people; and the moreextensive the means of education, the more confidently may we relyon the preservation of our publicliberties.

Government, in my humbleopinion, should be formed tosecure and to enlarge the exerciseof the natural rights of itsmembers; and every government, which has not this in view, as itsprincipal object, is not agovernment of the legitimate kind.

James Wilson

If justice, good faith, honor, gratitude &all the other Qualities which enoble thecharacter of a nation, and fulfil the endsof Government, be the fruits of ourestablishments, the cause of liberty willacquire a dignity and lustre, which it hasnever yet enjoyed; and an example willbe set which can not but have the mostfavorable influence on the rights ofmankind. If on the other side, ourGovernments should be unfortunatelyblotted with the reverse of these cardinaland essential Virtues, the great causewhich we have engaged to vindicate, willbe dishonored & betrayed; the last &fairest experiment in favor of the rights ofhuman nature will be turned againstthem; and their patrons & friendsexposed to be insulted & silenced by thevotaries ofTyranny and Usurpation.

James Madison
