What is it?
Conscious Discipline® is a comprehensive classroom management program and social‐emotional curriculum based on current brain research, child development information, and developmentally appropriate practices. Conscious Discipline® has been specifically designed to make changes in the lives of adults first. The adults, in turn, change the lives of children.”

Conscious Discipline provides a blueprint for helping adults incorporate safety and connection into their work and life.
When we are able to use Conscious Discipline® consistently in our life, we are better able to help others function from their “executive state”, where they are more able to learn, cooperate and access what they have already learned.

How we manage our brain states (stress) can largely determine what brain state the child will function from.

Basic Conscious Discipline Structure

The first step in composure for infants and toddlers is for the adult to actively calm himself or herself.
93% of communication is non‐verbal and energetic.
Children must see and feel your composure first, before you can assist them.

The ultimate goal is
Not to STOP the behavior
But to begin the process of teaching self regulation.
Every conflict (problem) is an opportunity to teach!

Infants and toddlers learn to self‐regulate their internal states
in dynamic interactions with caregivers.
They cannot do it alone.
For children to be successful we have to lend them our prefrontal lobes.

What is attunement
All Concepts from the Conscious Discipline Program, by Dr. Becky Bailey, with permission, www.Consciousdiscipline.com 800.842.2846
Definition
Being aware of and responsive to someone.
Attunement occurs when one person is able to consciously focus his other attention on the internal world of another.
How do we know when there is attunement?
All Concepts from the Conscious Discipline Program, by Dr. Becky Bailey, with permission, www.Consciousdiscipline.com 800.842.2846
The Attuned Adult is:
Present – focused on the moment
Reads the child’s (other adults) signals
Nonjudgmental (it is what it is)
We cannot love an judge at the same time.

What is attachment
All Concepts from the Conscious Discipline Program, by Dr. Becky Bailey, with permission, www.Consciousdiscipline.com 800.842.2846
• Attachment serves to keep the infant close to it’s mother until it is mature enough to survive on it’s own.
• Healthy attachment makes way for independence and connection with others.
• Attachment figures are the secure base we return to when life seems to be unraveling.
How do we know there is attachment? All Concepts from the Conscious Discipline Program, by Dr. Becky Bailey, with permission,
www.Consciousdiscipline.com 800.842.2846
A child forms her primary attachment during times of distress, generally the mother figure.
A child may also form secondary attachment bonds with caregivers.
CAF = Caregiver Attachment Figure

All concepts from Conscious Discipline® Program by Dr. Becky Bailey with permission www.consciousdiscipline.com 1.800.842.2846
Secure attachment style:
R = Respond Consistently to the infants distress
O = Organize yourself first (to be in a calm state)
A = Attune to the child’s internal state by offeringempathy and understanding
D = Describe by “mind reading” intentions and desires.

Job #1
It’s our job to help insure that the infants and toddlers in our care have secure attachments.
It’s only thru these secure attachments that
children can learn.
It’s all about the relationship!

The capacity to generate positive emotional states in our core adult‐child relationships is key to healthy development, and lifelong physical and mental health.
Parent‐Child/Care giver/child interactions that create joy and positivity reduce behavior problems later in school.

Did you know?
To wire a brain for attunement . . .
46% of the child’s awake time needs to be face time.
A sad fact:
Depressed parents provide an average of 10% face time.
