4IREM® Fall Leadership Conference Evaluation December 2013

Background

The 2013 IREM Fall Leadership Conference was held on October 16 – 19 in Scottsdale, Arizona. IREM’s Meetings and Conferences Department indicated that a total of 595 people attended the Conference. Following the conference, attendees were sent an e-mail message asking them to complete an online evaluation.

A total of 233 evaluations were completed online. This was enough for a 95% confidence level in the data with a +/- 5.0% sampling error. The sections that follow detail the responses that attendees submitted. The lowercase “n” that appears in some tables equals the number of respondents that answered that given question.

The respondents were also asked to indicate what vendors they think should attend the Fall Leadership Conference in the future. Only 20 respondents provided suggestions. Those suggestions are listed below.

1. Many companies. I was surprised at the lack of vendors for trade show type set up. BOMA Conference has much bigger and better vendors’ participation. Seeing products and vendors services is educational.

2. Yardi3. IREM Team Store4. HD Supply and Sherwin Williams5. Belfor6. I think that in general it seemed as if people did not pay much attention to the vendors there. Every time I was in that

area there were few people if any around. There needs to be something that is more focused on the vendors and not an event that is hosted in the area. Not sure what that is yet.

7. BMS & BMI providers would be great to see8. VFA Inc. - www.vfa.com9. property solutions10. IREM Store11. REALTOR® University. However, I am not convinced of the school/program is recognized.12. Believe they all were, but be sure to stick with national vendors so it's of benefit to everyone.15. Practical vendors. you know... paint, carpet...etc16. Where was REformation?17. MRI18. Appendix A. Additional Comments

Respondents were asked to provide additional comments or recommendations. The full comments are included below.

1. I would like to see more educational offerings. Also educational offering in which you get CE credits as you do in BOMA conferences.

2. Not have to travel so far. Try going back to Chicago.3. The conference educational sessions are improving every year.4. The meeting rooms were very cold. I have a condition that is triggered by extreme temp changes and I was very

uncomfortable in numerous sessions because the A/C was too strong or too cold.5. The refreshments during the breaks were not up to normal standards. There should have been snack foods as well as

drinks.6. It would be nice if there was a little more free time to explore the area the conference is located. The only thing I saw

in Scottsdale was the resort.7. I believe it would be a good idea to provide snacks ex cheese and crackers etc during refreshment breaks8. I strongly suggest that you come up with another process of selecting the seats for the Inaugural Gala. The process of

obtaining the tickets from each chapter member in attendance, selecting the tables, and then turning them in again is very frustrating and inefficient use of time. One suggestion might be emailing the IAE prior to the conference and seats can be selected at that time.

9. Was an excellent venue in a warm part of USA10. It would be nice to finish the conference Friday evening or have the key note on a day other than Saturday.11. It would be beneficial to possibly start the conference earlier in the week and not have the keynote speaker on

Saturday. We all have families to get back to and its difficult to miss that part of the weekend so there were a lot of people who didn’t go to the keynote speaker which i thought would have been very good for everyone to hear. It's a timing issue.

12. Would be nice if Regional Dinner could be coupled with IAE Forum so that IAEs could attend all, but not have to stay for almost the whole week.Food at the gala was less than desirable. No one ate at our table.

13. Love the running in the morning; however plant to start run at 6:00am or start classes at 8:30am in order to arrive timely to sessions. Great Conference. Thanks.

14. The Hotel provided excellent service.15. Education Sessions need to be maximum 60 minutes with less introduction or sponsor time.

Anant Yardi was decent speaker but I thought it seemed like if you pay to be the largest sponsor then you were able to buy a keynote speaker position.

16. All sessions were valuable; but the most rewarding was the volunteering opportunity with follow IREM members. It was satisfying to be able to "Give Back" to those in need.

17. I felt like many of the sessions were valuable and I came away with something from all of them.18. The food at the Gala was poor.19. As usual, this was a first-class event.20. I would like to see the learning labs be a bit longer, maybe 45 minutes as these often were some of the most

interesting topics. The topics also should focus on the trends we are seeing in the industry and that are part of the IREM strategic plan.

21. I thought the breakfast session with Steve Rizzo was fantastic - great idea!22. One of the best educational conference I have ever attending and all the sessions left me with a lot of new and creative

ideas to implement with my company. All the speakers and presenters were amazing.23. Pick venues that are large enough to accommodate all attendees

Should you schedule sessions during governing council?24. More sessions on specific property management specific topics and sessions on managing people and leadership.25. I felt that the sessions should be only one hour.

I felt there wasn't enough time in between sessions to network.I felt that the conference should be only 3 daysI feel the conference should be scheduled a month earlier as most of us are completing budgets

26. There were several people that missed the last key note speaker due to needing to travel home. Is it possible to have all keynote speakers during the week so that everyone can benefit/participate?

27. The conference was amazing and very informative. i feel like IREM did its best in bringing it's members value. Thank you!

28. There were at least two sessions I could not attend because they were scheduled at the same time as others I wanted to attend. I had to make a choice of which I felt were more relevant to what I do; however, it is very beneficial to gain new insight from experts. Please consider the possible number of attendees based on the importance and relevance of the topics to hopefully avoid this in the future. I thoroughly enjoyed this conference.

29. Extremely enjoyable place to visit and development meaningful relationships. Staff of Resort and IREM were (as always) knowledgeable and a comfort to a hectic but productive event.

30. The IREM Shared Interest Community Meet-up Sessions (I attended the Mixed-Use Session) need some work. I like the concept, but the moderator should really know something about the subject (our didn't). Actually, a peer might be better to use as a moderator.

31. Less events on site. After awhile you need to "get off the island"32. I like the mix of casual and formal events33. The only negative was the golfing experience of the starter being rude about slow play when we are playing a scramble

and 9 holes are cart path only. We finished in 4.5 hours which is very reasonable for a scramble. All other events and activities were AWESOME!!!!! Nicely done!!!!!!!

34. I want to have better breakout sessions. I would like to see something new and maybe a round table for each discipline (office, retail, industrial, medical office, etc.) and hear what others see going on in their markets, what they see happening in the future that will affect our business. I also would prefer the keynote speaker be more toward the beginning of the conference and have the conference end on Friday.

35. No music during dinner at the gala. Too loud and couldn't hear each other talk.36. GREAT LOCATION.37. more free time to explore area38. Tips and tricks using mobile devices in property management.39. I am looking forward to Orlando.40. The location was excellent, however, too expensive to allow a greater participation, which would benefit everyone

including IREM national.41. Overall the conference was a dud. The whole thing didn't flow well there were too many long gaps between sessions

there was not a lot of effort except for one meeting for the regional groups42. We need to have more ideas on how to grow our businesses and mentor each other. Part of it was my fault! Overall,

a valuable conference, but I feel I should have worked it smarter (70% my fault, 30% the conference.)43. I would like to have a session with other similar sized Chapters (we are small) - we have a part time (very minimal time)

IAE; how do other small chapters cope with the IREM chapter operating standards with very little non-volunteer assistance.

44. Don't hold Governing Council beginning at 8:00a.m. when there was a late event the evening before!45. I did not like being located at the Hampton for this event only because the shuttle service was not convenient and it

cause the group to not do some things together.46. Liked the bar codes to download the session's information47. They just keep getting better and better.48. This was a wonderful conference!!!49. More time for regional meetings and possibly an early late regional meeting to set up and then wrap up.50. Overall I found the conference to be excellent. Better than a few from past years. My only disappointment was the

Party with a Purpose. It was more of a networking event than party. I felt a little let down about that.51. I would like more free time to connect and get to know better new friends.52. IREM staff was amazing as usual!53. please ask the hotel to block off more rooms. I had to travel to another hotel and it was very inconvenient.54. Holding the keynote speaker on some other day than the last day. Too many people trying to get home and many

missed it (I did.)55. Thought it was a fantastic conference.56. I would like to see more informative educational sessions for the experienced veteran. Also, if they could be scheduled

at times other than when the committees meet it would enable more people to attend.57. We should meet in Scottsdale every year! What a wonderful place and very affordable.58. Diabetics which comprise 30% of the population cannot eat a continental breakfast with all white flour items and no

protein. 3 out of 10 is enough to offer additional food choices.59. The next leadership conference is back in Orlando.

Although Orlando is a great place we were just there in 2010. You can only go to Disney World so many times. I would have preferred an alternative location.

60. Great conference. Would suggest more sessions on Commercial "Retail" sector. Thanks!61. Dr. Debbie Phillips is a nationally acclaimed speaker and her time was scheduled during the governing council. Lost

opportunity for giving her an opportunity to reach some special decision makers. Seriously, she had 200 to 300 attend her sessions at the NAA meetings and they LOVE her. She is upbeat and enthusiastic but also engaging, exceptionally knowledgeable and well received to every generational audience.

62. The continental breakfast's need to be more nutritious, need eggs n bacon, oatmeal, Greek or Activia yogurt, everyday. Toast, jelly, peanut butter spread.

63. The conferences just keep getting nicer and nicer. I always enjoy them. The Westin Kierland Resort was an outstanding place to have the conference this year!! Truly exceptional service by all!!

64. Touring of local attractions.65. Great job!66. More courses on conflict resolution would be great67. Wednesday evening was too crowded with events. The Past Presidents dinner was too short. Maybe start Major

Donors recognition event at 5:00pm and start PP Dinner at 6:00pm, with no event later that the current officers and senior staff feel obligated to attend.

68. All Presenters or Moderators should have some training in public speaking. Several were obviously lacking in public speaking skills or preparation and simply read their handouts. This made for some very boring sessions and took attention away from the information being provided.

69. Staff did a tremendous job. Site also was perfect, heard great comments from folks within and outside of US. I think the conference was a 10. A valuable mix of networking, social events, education, fun, fantastic shopping venue for members, beautiful scenery and caring, enthusiastic, well prepared staff. Loved it.

70. The conference was amazing, thank you for all your hard work!71. Past Presidents Dinner was not up to standard.

Inaugural dinner music way to loud to converse without shouting...totally inappropriate and unnecessary.72. some sessions ran over and cut into the time allotted for others and for visiting the sponsors73. I was appreciative of the sincerity, respect, and brevity of the presentations at the Gala dinner. While choosing

smoked brisket for the main was a bold and economical choice, was not executed well. There were many plates cleared at my table with the protein still intact..always a bad sign. The carrots and veggies got rave reviews. The desserts also left a lot to be desired and to be honest, Kierland needs to find a new dessert purveyor as again, lots of plates had uneaten desserts. Otherwise, we can come back to this resort any time, I enjoyed the location and my stay there. Thank you to the IREM HQ staff for all their hard work and planning.

74. Wonderful conference!75. Offer Hospitality Education for all the new apartments under construction. Their service levels will require a new level

of service in the apt industry. Start Gala at 6 or 6:30.Have more hotel rooms at conference hotel.Layout the email brochure of conference events differently. When you print, it is hard to read what is on which day.

76. The food at the inaugural dinner has a lot to be desired77. While the vendor monopoly was a good idea, you shouldn't have needed ALL vendors to submit for the drawing. We

were pushed to skip holes in the golf tournament. I didn't feel this was very professional of the grounds crew at the hotel.

78. Thanks to Lynn for listening to my suggestions a couple years ago on limiting the hours of booth exhibits and for organizing as you have. Great!
