1920年~ 1950年にブロードウェイ・ミュージカル、映画音楽などのために生み出されたアメリカのポピュラー・ソングの中で最も重要で最も影響をもたらした作品の「基準(canon)」をいう。

その基準とは、作曲家であり評論家であったAlec Wilder が 1972年に出版した“ American Popular Song: The Great Innovators, 1900–1950 “ に基づいている。
