“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit,

he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh,

and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you,

‘You must be born again.’St. John 3

Amen.z

Psalm 8

Unison 1  O Lord our Governor, how excellent is thy Name in ’ all the ’ world : thou that has set thy ’ glory a’bove the ’ heavens!2  Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, be’cause of thine ’ enemies : that thou mightest still the ’ enemy ’ and the a’venger.3  For I will consider thy heavens, even the ’ works of·thy ’ fingers : the moon and the stars ’ which thou ’ hast or’dained.4  What is man, that thou art ’ mindful of ’ him : and the son of man, that ’ thou ’ visitest ‘ him?5  Thou madest him lower ’ than the ’ angels : to ’ crown him· with ’ glory and ’ worship.

6  Thou makest him to have dominion of the ’ works of· thy ’ hands : and thou hast put all things in sub’jection ’ under· his ’ feet;7  All ’ sheep and ’ oxen : yea and the ’ beasts ’ of the ’ field;8  The fowls of the air and the ’ fishes· of the ’ sea : and whatsoever walketh ’ through the ’ paths of· the ’ seas.Unison 9  O ’ Lord our ’ Governor : how excellent is thy ’ Name in ’ all the ’ world!Glory be to the Father ’ and • to the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy ’ Ghost; As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and round the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. Round the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal. And round the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all round and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”And whenever the living creatures give glory and honour and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They cast

their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

-3-The Gospel: St John 3:1-15The Gospel is announced, we respond: Glory to you, O LordNow there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

After the Gospel is read we sing: Praise to you, O Christ

Sermon

Anthem: Blessed be the God and FatherBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of Godthrough faith unto salvation ready to be revealed at

the last time.

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear.

Love one another with a pure heart fervently.See that ye love one another.

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God.For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away.

But the word of the Lord endureth for ever.Amen.
