John 8:56-59Passion Sunday (Fifth Sunday in Lent)

Opening Words.God in Christ has revealed his gloryCome let us worship

From the rising of the sun to its settingThe Lord’s name is greatly to be praised.

Give him praise, you servants of the LordO praise the name of the Lord.

Opening Song: : The Royal banners forward go1 The royal banners forward go,the cross shines forth in mystic glow;where he in flesh, our flesh who made, our sentence bore, our ransom paid.

2. There whilst he hung, his sacred sideby soldier’s spear was opened wide,to cleanse us in the precious floodof water mingled with his blood.

3. Fulfilled is now what David toldin true prophetic song of old,how God the nations’ King should be;for God is reigning from the tree.

3.O tree of glory, tree most fair, ordained those holy limbs to bear, how bright in purple robe it stood, the purple of a Saviour’s blood!

4.Upon its arms, like balance true,he weighed the price for sinners due,the price which none but he could pay,and spoiled the spoiler of his prey.

5.To thee, eternal Three in One,let homage meet by all be done:as by the cross thou dost restore,so rule and guide us evermore.

Words: Latin, Venantius Fortunatus 530-609; We pray… trans. J. M. Neale 1818-1866

All Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:cleanse the thoughts of our heartsby the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you,and worthily magnify your holy name;through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the LawThe response to the Summary is: Amen. Lord, have mercy.

Maria will play music in the background as we reflect on our needs for the Lord’s mercy in our lives

KyrieLord, have mercy. All Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. All Christ, have mercy.Lord, have mercy. All Lord, have mercy.

Prayer after Communion:[a moment of silence]

All Father of all,we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far offyou met us in your Son and brought us home.Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory.May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life;we who drink his cup bring life to others;we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world.Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us,so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name;through Christ our Lord.Amen.

Post Communion Hymn: When I survey the wondrous Cross

1 When I survey the wondrous cross where the young Prince of Glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.

2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the cross of Christ, my God: all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.

3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?

4 Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

Words: Isaac Watts (1674-1748), 1707Music: Rockingham (adapted by E. Miller,

1735-1807

- 2 -The Collects:  WE beseech you, Almighty God, mercifully to look upon your people: that by your great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore, both in body and soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.Almighty and everlasting God, who hates nothing that you have made, and forgives the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

New Testament Lesson: Hebrews 9:11-15But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Song : There is a higher throne

There is a higher throneThan all this world has known,Where faithful ones from ev’ry tongueWill one day come. Before the Son we’ll stand,Made faultless through the Lamb;Believing hearts find promised grace—Salvation comes. Refrain:Hear heaven’s voices sing;Their thund’rous anthem ringsThrough em’rald courts and

2 And there we’ll find our home,Our life before the throne; We’ll honor Him in perfect songWhere we belong. He’ll wipe each tear-stained eyeAs thirst and hunger die.The Lamb becomes our Shepherd King; We’ll reign with Him. Refrain…

The Gospel: St John 8:46-endPriest: Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew. All: Glory to you O Lord.

Jesus said, “Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God.  The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?”  Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honour my Father, and you dishonour me. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”  The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon!  Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’  Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?”  Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’  But you have not known him.  I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word.  Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day.  He saw it and was glad.”  So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”  Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”  So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

Agnus Dei

All Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

All We do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Father,

trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body and our souls washed through with his precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

The Communion

Baptized persons who are communicant members of other Churches which subscribe to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and are in good standing in their own Church are welcome to Communion. Come forward with faith, hope, and charity, discerning the Lord’s body.

Those who do not wish to receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing – you may indicate by crossing your arms over your chest at the altar rail.

(we kneel)

All glory be to you, our heavenly Father, who, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christto suffer death upon the cross for our redemption;who made there by his one oblation of himself once offereda full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfactionfor the sins of the whole world;he instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue,a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again.Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that, by the power of your Holy Spirit,we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution,in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood;who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks;he gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

All Amen.

[a moment of silence]

Let us pray. All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy

kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and

ever. Amen.

The Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father;through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Maryand was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

Priest God shows his love for us in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Let us then show our love for him by confessing our sins in penitence and faith.

Romans 5.8

We pray the following after a moment of silence:

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father,we have sinned against you and against our neighbourin thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us,forgive us all that is pastand grant that we may serve you in newness of lifeto the glory of your name. Amen.

The priest proclaims the Absolution – the assurance of God’s forgiveness

The Peace (we stand):

The peace of the Lord be always with you.We respond: and also with you.

We offer one another a sign of peace.

OFFERTORY SONGYour offerings will be received during this song.

The basket is to support the work of this chaplaincy. The blue bag is for charitable giving donations

for the - 6 -Offertory Song: How deep the Father’s love for us 1 How deep the Father’s love for us, How vast beyond all measure, That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss - The Father turns His face away, As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory.

2 Behold the man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders; Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life - I know that it is finished.

3 I will not boast in anything, No gifts, no power, no wisdom; But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer; But this I know with all my heart - His wounds have paid my ransom.

Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you.

All And also with you.Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy,at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise, holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God,through Jesus Christ our Lord.

And now we give you thanks because, for our salvation, He was obedient even to death on the Cross. The tree of shame was made the tree of glory; And where life was lost, there life has been restored.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven,we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the

highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
