WITH CURRENT ANNUAL SALES OF AROUND 600 UNITS THE LIGHT DUTY 4X4 SECTOR IS NOT HUGE. SO HINO'S ENTRYINTO THIS NICHE ISN'T LIKELYTO BRING A HUGE SALES BOOST, HOWEVER IT IS STILL ATTRACTIVE, DELIVERING GOODFLEET CONNECTIONS, PARTICULARLY WITH RURAL FIRE SERVICES AND MINING OPERATIONS, AS ISUZU AND FUSOHAVE PROVED. EDITOR WHITING WENT ALONG TO THE LAUNCH TO FIND OUT ALL ABOUT HINO'S 300 SERIES 4X4.

Hino chose the 2017 Brisbanetruck show to preview its new4x4 light truck competitor, the 300, so by the time the

launch came around in November wewere chomping at the bit to try it.

Hino's chosen model for Australia is the300 Series 817 and that model numberroughly indicates eight tonnes GVM and170hp. However the actual GVM is 7.5tonnes and the output is 165hp.

The Hino 4x4 is available in single caband crew cab configurations, both poweredby the 165hp (121kW), 464Nm, four-litrediesel engine mated to a six-speed manualoverdrive manual transmission and a dual-range 4x4 transfer case.

The Hino N04C engine is Euro 5 ADR80/03 emission compliant and utilises aDiesel Particulate active Reduction filter(DPR), which has proven its reliability inAustralian applications over the past 10 years.

The Hino DPR is said to capture 95per cent of exhaust particulates and isdesigned to be automatically self-cleaning(regenerating) without the need for driverintervention.

The Hino transfer case comes from thelarger GT 4x4 model and, with low range

gearing of 2.2:1, the Hino 300 series 4x4has the widest spread of ratios and thelowest crawl speed in its class. Overallreduction in low-low is 65:1.

A bonus of using the GT's air-shifttransfer case is an on-board electric aircompressor that can be upgraded to actas a tyre inflator and to power air tools.

Free-wheeling hubs are standard andare manually locked. Once the hubs areengaged 4x4 can be selected on the move bythe driver, via a button on the dashboard.

Standard equipment includes VehicleStability Control (VSC) - a first for aJapanese-built truck in this category - four-wheel disc brakes, driver and passengerSRS airbags and a reversing camera.

Working in conjunction with the brakeand engine control systems, VSC helpsprevent the truck from rolling over afterentering a corner too fast by monitoringthe steering angle, wheel rotation speed, yaw rate and lateral G forces. VSC cantake the appropriate action: reducingengine power and/or applying individualbrakes with the intent of keeping thevehicle upright.

VSC is also able to enhance vehiclestability on loose or slippery surfaces by

reducing engine power and applyingthe brakes to individual wheels.

The new Hino 4x4 uses a novel chassislayout that features a straight-rail ladderframe, with a supplementary framebolted underneath it from around themid point all the way to the rear. Therear suspension bolts to this lower frame.

This unique layout provides straightupper rails, for ease of mountingbodywork and accessories; a high-setforward chassis to accommodate a driveaxle underneath it and rear suspensionhangers that don't need to be complexand heavy dropped types.

As a result, the 817 has the highest tareweight in its class, but the upside shouldbe great inherent strength. It gives awayaround 300kg to the Isuzu NPS 4x4 andthat may be critical in such vocations asfire-fighting, where every litre counts.

Although there's no plan for a factory-built, single-tyred version to tackle theburgeoning 4WD motorhome market theprototype had inbuilt front hub spacers,to widen front axle track to better matchthe wheel track of the rear duals.

Although Hino has pulled up shortof providing a wide-single-tyre package,

wide-singles will be available as a dealer-fit option, probably using All TerrainWarrior wheels.

Likewise, there's no rear axle differentiallock in the specification, but an Eaton NoSpin self-locker is also a dealer-fit option.

The extensive Australian testing thatthe Hino 4x4 has undergone underpinsits 'Made 4 Australia, Made 4 Work'positioning.

Developed specifically for the Australianmarket, the 817 4x4 has undergoneextensive testing in some of the country'smost rugged operating conditions.Selected Hino customers have beenevaluating prototype trucks on and off-road in some of the harshest Australianbush-tracks, trails and roads since 2014.

"In addition to developing the truck ontest tracks in Japan, three prototype 300Series 4x4 vehicles have also undergoneyears of real-life infield testing," saidDaniel Petrovski, the manager of productstrategy for Hino Motor Sales Australia.

"The test vehicles have operatedflawlessly across various types of terrainfrom the deserts of Australia's interior tothe rain forests of Queensland's Cape York.

"Given the success of the Hino 500Series FT and GT 4x4 models and therecord breaking results we have seen byHino at the Dakar Rally, the new 300series 4x4 models come with a champion4x4 pedigree.

"With this and the extensive Australianfield testing, we are extremely confident

that it will be a popular choice for ourcustomers," concluded Mr Petrovski.

The Hino 300 Series 4x4 comes witha three-year/100,000km warranty.

Getting in and out of 4x4 trucks canbe an awkward climb, but Hino has madethe task relatively easy. The three accesssteps are arranged in a 'staircase' layoutthat puts the bottom step outboard of theupper ones. The front tyre can also serveas an additional step. Two grab handlesflank the door opening, so it's alwayspossible to have three contact points whengetting in and out.

A standard suspension seat withmagnetically variable damping isstandard, but, unfortunately, a single-passenger suspension seat to replace thestandard two-place bench is not. That'sanother dealer-fit option.

Ergonomics are generally good, but wereckon the 4WD and High-Low rangeswitches are too far from the driver. There'svacant switch space nearer to the steeringcolumn and that's where they should be.

The heated, power-adjustable rear visionmirrors are 'big truck' types that giveexcellent flat-plane and spotter images. The swing-away brackets are strong and

easy enough to fold in while on the move,to reduce the chance of mirror damagefrom tree branches.

The Hino six-speed main box is stirredby a stubby lever that has short throws. The test trucks were brand new, so shiftaction was a tad tight. We like the gatelayout that puts first gear and reversedirectly opposite - essential for quickshifting when 'rocking' a stuck vehicle outof rut hollows.

The four-litre diesel did its job quietly, with mechanical noise evident only withrevs above 3000rpm. That red band wasuseful only for engine braking, becausethe torquey donk did its best from around1400rpm up to 2800rpm, climbing mosthighway grades in fifth or sixth cog.

Ride quality isn't the strong point ofJapanese 4x4 trucks, but the loaded Hinoswe drove rode better than their Japanese-made competitors, thanks to their longerfront springs. A set of top-quality dampersshould improve that even further.

Obviously, the driver's suspension seatdamped out more bump action than thefixed passenger perches, but ride qualityin the passenger perches - withoutsuspension seating - was acceptable.

Fatter, lower-pressure tyres would improveit even more, but there are payloadcompromises with the single-tyre option.

Handling was flat and steering wasaccurate with good road feel on bitumensurfaces, but the skinny front tyres showedsome side slip and understeer on peagravel roads.

The ABS disc brake system workedeffectively on sealed and dirt roads, butthe ABS function was deactivated when4WD was selected.

Selecting 4WD and low-range wasdone with the simple press of dashboardbuttons and the action was instantaneous.High-range-4WD could be selected on therun, provided the front free-wheeling hubswere locked. The system is part-time-4WD, so it's not intended for full-time useon high-friction surfaces. For low-rangeselection the truck needed to be stoppedand in neutral.

With overall reduction of 65:1 the Hino300 4x4 climbed and descended very steepgrades effortlessly, including a testing1:1.5 concrete ramp.

We'll have a test vehicle for a week'sevaluation in the very near future. Watchthis space. 0
