C e o ’ S M e S S a g e

The construction industry is rapidly changing amid dynamic markets in which the boundaries of countries and cultures have collapsed and breakthroughs in technology are constantly being made. This is why POSCO E&C has chosen to enter into new areas of business with the aim of being a global total solution provider, while also advancing into new world markets by relying on its excellent technological competencies.

Boasting an excellent financial structure and the highest credit rating among Asian construction companies, POSCO E&C has been recognized for its capabilities, by exporting blast furnaces to Iran and India, the first among domestic construction companies, and by successfully completing a steel-making plant in Japan. Other projects include: building an international business district that will play a pivotal role in the New Songdo International City, the nation’s first free economic zone; carrying out the development of North An Khanh New City, the first self-reliant city in Vietnam; and developing a master plan for the Hanoi Metropolitan City. In addition, POSCO E&C is strengthening its position in Central and South America thanks to its entry into the power plant markets in Chile and Peru, another first in the domestic industry. Recently, it won a contract for oil tanks in the Bahamas, gaining recognition for its energy plant construction ability.

These successes are the result of the company’s dedication to ensuring technological competencies with forward-looking insights, rather than merely resting on its laurels. Such efforts include: the FINEX process, an innovative steel-making technology; an advance into the business of light rail transit, a next-generation environmentally-friendly means of transportation; and investment in new and renewable energy sources such as fuel cells, solar energy and wind power generation. POSCO E&C has been able to lead with the belief that technologies based on respect for human life and dignity are the most valuable.

It is also committed to becoming an honest and transparent enterprise that fulfils its roles and obligations as a caring and concerned corporate citizen, together with its parent company POSCO. As a result, it has won the “Korea’s Most Admired Company” award every year since 2004, and was given the “Global Green Management Excellence Awards” for five consecutive years (2004-2009), the first in the domestic industry.

Moving forward, POSCO E&C will work to become a global E&C company that will lead the construction culture, based on the belief that coexistence and cooperation lead to the highest management efficiencies, the principle that only transparent and fair companies can earn trust, and a corporate culture of communication. With innovative ideas that are concerned with humankind, advanced technologies that overcome limitations, and a passionate vision that dose not fear change, POSCO E&C will achieve new dreams while looking further ahead and moving faster. Thank you.

PoSCo e&C will reform as a total solution provider, leading the construction industry with innovative ideas, advanced technologies and a passionate vision.

Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF)

RDF technology produces fuel with consistent calorific value by using combustible waste such as plastic, paper and cartons. This fuel is burned at RDF-only power generation facilities to supply high-efficiency electricity and heating to houses and business sites, or at small and mid-sized RDF-only boiler facilities for agricultural and fishing villages. POSCO E&C has ensured environmental safety by installing a device to prevent air pollutants emissions from the RDF combustion.

Floating Seawall

Floating seawalls are seawater drainage-type breakwaters, which boast excellent pollution control and water quality improvement within ports, and outstanding constructability and economic efficiency at weak grounds and deep sea areas. It is an environmentally friendly technology with less impact on the environment, the ecosystem, and the ground of the seabed following the installation of structures. “The floating seawall with space for running water and expanded perforated plates,” the independent seawater model installed at Wonjeon Port in Masan and yeonmyeon Port in Tongyeong, has noticeably augmented the performance of perforated plates to a range of over 6 seconds, whereas the range used to be 3-4 seconds.

Desalination There are two types of desalination: evaporation (Multi-Stage Flash or MSF/Multi-Effect Distillation or MED) and reverse osmosis (RO), with the latter leading worldwide due to its excellent economic efficiency and technology. POSCO E&C has entered into the RO-type business, based on its impressive experience in water supply and drainage facilities construction and its membrane-using sewage reuse technologies. Key process technologies in development include bio-fouling control, plant engineering, low-energy membrane operation technologies, and the optimization of boron removal. POSCO E&C also plans to build a desalination facility with a capacity of 500,000 tons a year inside the Gwangyang Works.

POSCO E&C wishes to be an excellent business partner. It has established transparent business relations by incorporating the “Three major guidelines for win-win cooperation” as recommended by the Korea Fair Trade Commission, while operating its own Win-Win Growth Group and carrying out a variety of activities to support its business partners. With synergies for mutual growth, POSCO E&C will continue to enjoy respect and trust around the world.
