With the foundation of Goldhofer Inc. in the US and the acquisition of a majority share in its long-standing sales and service partner Flite Line Equipment, we are continuing the pursuit of our growth strategy in this important market.

The newly founded company Goldhofer Inc. strengthens the Goldhofer presence in the US and the rest of the Americas.

As a result, Goldhofer now has a strong basis for further expansion in the world’s largest market for ground support equipment and for even closer and more professional support for its customers. The

focus is now on expansion of the service offering and the necessary structures as well as the further devel-opment of a competitive and market-oriented product portfolio.

Lothar Holder, Member of the Board at Goldhofer with responsibility for the Airport Technology division: “Thanks to the merger with our long-standing and highly successful partner Flite Line, we now have ideal conditions for pursuing our policy of growth on the American continent and bringing our product and service portfolio even closer to our American custom-ers. We are delighted that John Biagi, President and CEO of Flite Line Equipment and his entire manage-

ment team and staff will continue to lead the way in our new joint company and to maintain and further develop relationships with customers in both the airport sector and servicing within our heavy-haulage business.”

John Biagi says: “We are excited to have such a strong partner as Goldhofer for the further expansion of our businesses in the Americas. For all of our cus-tomers and our other partners, this is a highly positive message as we will be able to further enhance service and support for existing and new customers alike.”

In May 2017, Philipp Bäcker began working as a new business development manager for Goldhofer. Within the framework of our growth strategy for 2021, he is responsible for the build-up and further develop-ment of sales and service structures in North and South America. This not only involves launching new Goldhofer-brand products, but also increasing our existing market share and implementing local product requirements in order to get even closer to our American customers.

Before joining Goldhofer, Mr. Bäcker worked in India for several years, where, from 2011 to 2017, he ac-companied the build-up of a subsidiary for a German manufacturer of trailer components.

It is our joint objective to ensure that the Goldhofer brand will become even better known in America, and that it is also recognized as a “local player.” As an internationally experienced and customer-orient-ed employee, Mr. Bäcker – while always focusing on long-term customer satisfaction – is highly committed to working on these exciting and demanding tasks. We are convinced that his expertise in the build-up and further development of international offi ces will help him achieve his goals.

For some time now, the electronic brake system EBS has been representing the state of the art for commercial vehicles such as trucks or buses. As the fi rst manufac-turer worldwide, Goldhofer has also used this system in a heavy-duty module: In 2016, the EBS-equipped »ADDRIVE« was presented at the bauma in Munich, Germany.

As of October 2017, all of our towed THP and self-pro-pelled PST modules are being equipped with the elec-tronic brake system EBS. This means that driving these modules is now even safer, because, thanks to the EBS, the brakes react particularly fast. In vehicle combinations, the new EBS-equipped modules can also be operated with ALB-controlled modules (ABS) or with modules with-out braking power regulation.

GOLDHOFER’S PST/SL-EA CAB RIDE FOR KING KONG

Occupying 20 hectares of land, the Vialand leisure park – with its 26 modern rides – opened in the Istanbul district of Eyüp in 2013 as the fi rst leisure park in Tur-key. Last spring, one of the main attractions – the King Kong – had to be moved in the framework of modifi -cations to the park. The gigantic fi gure of King Kong alone weighs 30 t and, in addition to a hydraulic hoist and other pieces of equipment, also houses counter-weights to lend the necessary stability to the fi gure in action. For the ride, visitors sit in a carriage, which King Kong – roaring and exhaling smoke – then lifts twelve meters into the air and gives a good shaking before returning the carriage and its passengers – safe and sound, of course – gently to the ground.

Istanbul’s Hareket Heavy Lifting & Project Transportation Co. won the contract to move the ride a distance of about 700 m. Following a preliminary analysis, the transport pros at Hareket decided to use a Goldhofer PST/SL-E self-propelled combination with ten axle lines. Samet Gürsu, project manager at Hareket, explains: “We decided to use the Goldhofer PST/SL-E due to the load’s high center of gravity and narrow roads inside the leisure park and for precise maneuver-ing with the fi gure.”

In the confi ned space available at some points on the journey through the park, the Hareket team was able to take full advantage of the electronic multiway steering on the PST/SL-E for precision maneuvering. The total load of the King Kong fi gure was not a problem for the trailer: The PST/SL-E has a high bending moment and, with a maximum possible axle load of 45 t, took the 30 t giant in its stride.

A more challenging aspect of the operation was loading and securing the fi gure on the trailer, as it was engineered without any lashing points. In the fi rst stage of the operation, a 500 t mobile crane was used to lift King Kong off its base and place it on the PST/SL-E. Since it had proved diffi cult to perform a precise calculation of the fi gure’s center of gravity, hook blocks were attached to King Kong’s arm and leg articulation points to ensure correct chain length for keeping the fi gure in the vertical position while lifting and position-ing it on the trailer. And to hold the cargo securely in place on the trailer, Hareket had a customized steel jig made with attachment points corresponding exactly to King Kong’s anchor points in the park. Once the jig had been bolted onto the PST/SL-E, the fi gure was secured at the attachment points. With that system, the Hareket team had no diffi culty in maneuvering their cargo through the leisure park before using the tele-scopic crane again to unload King Kong and position the fi gure precisely on the new site.

Who is lifting what? At fi rst sight, it almost looks as if King Kong were about to snatch up the carriage and the trailer.

The Goldhofer »Faktor 5« high girder bridge has passed its fi rst operational test in India with fl ying colors: The heavy-haulage specialist Lee & Muirhead Pvt Ltd. used Goldhofer’s multifunctional “lightweight big boy” designed to handle a wide range of oversized cargos with a dead weight of just 100 t – to transport a 405 t power plant generator stator over a distance of 500 km. The complete rig (comprising a 2x18-axle THP/SL combination plus the »Faktor 5« bridge with an overall weight of 752 t) took three months to com-plete the journey.

It was not an easy journey: The restrictions on heavy- haulage operations on the Indian subcontinent are signifi cant, and the road network – although one of the biggest in the world with a total length of 3.3 million km – is only 50 percent paved, and long-distance multi-lane roads are few. For transporting cargos weighing hundreds of tons, like stators, generators, transformers, turbines and cable drums, those are not exactly ideal conditions.

With this situation in mind, the specialists at Lee & Muirhead decided to call Goldhofer’s »Faktor 5« high girder bridge “Hanuman” after the Indian monkey deity, who is revered for his enormous strength, which according to legend enabled him to carry a mountain from the Himalayas. “With our heavy-haulage opera-tions, we sometimes have to move mountains, too,” says Pankaj Gadhia, CEO at Lee & Muirhead, “which is why ‘Hanuman’ is the perfect name for our »Faktor 5«.”

And it was truly heavy work that the Goldhofer high girder bridge had to perform, with more than 150 multi-span long bridges and numerous other obstacles to be negotiated on the 500 km long route. This included a 15 km stretch that had so many tight bends as to be impassable with the »Faktor 5« rig, which meant the 405 t stator had to be moved onto an 18-axle split combination P (1 + 1/2) and the »Faktor 5« completely dismantled.

Having passed through this narrow stretch of road, the bridge was reassembled and the convoy was able to continue its journey as planned. “Thanks to the support we received from the Goldhofer team, we were able to handle such obstacles without any major problems,” says Head of Project & Transportation Ruchit Saraf, who was responsible for the operation with Hanuman.

In another situation, the »Faktor 5« had to skirt round a toll plaza. As the terrain was completely unsuitable for a heavy-haulage convoy of this size, some ground fi rst had to be fi lled in on the steep terrain. In addition, a bypass had to be constructed in order to be able to drive over the 25 cm high curbstones. On other sections of the route, the gradients were so steep that a third tractor was needed in addition to the standard push-pull confi guration.

Easy change of tires – also with inside tires thanks to the hydraulic suspension

One of the many bridges crossed

A tricky operation: passing beneath two railway bridges

500 KM THROUGH INDIA, WITH THE »FAKTOR 5« FIRST APPLICATION FOR LEE & MUIRHEAD

In order to negotiate other obstacles, the »Faktor 5« high girder bridge had to be raised in some cases to a clearance height of more than 1.5 m. Technically speaking, that was not a problem as the vertical stroke of the high girder bridge – not including the stroke of the heavy-duty modules in the load-bearing zone – is no less than 1.8 m.

A particular challenge for the convoy was passing under several railway and road underpasses. On one occasion, the »Faktor 5« had to be completely lowered to pass under a railway bridge. That left a clearance of just four centimeters, but only as long as there was no train on the bridge at the time, as that would have caused defl ection in the deck of the bridge and dam-age to the stator.

For the decision-makers at Lee & Muirhead, a compa-ny that was founded in 1945 and is now one of India’s leading haulage operations, Hanuman’s fi rst journey proved one thing very clearly: The investment is paying off. “Thanks to our »Faktor 5«, we are now in a position to handle such big heavy-haulage jobs with outstand-ing effi ciency,” says CEO Pankaj Gadhia.

This is important, as the construction of new power plants is central to the country’s modernization pro-gram, with more than thirty major powergen projects scheduled for the next few years – all involving stators, generators or transformers weighing between 350 t and 450 t. Pankaj Gadhia is correspondingly optimistic about the future: “For such operations, we now have the perfect equipment: a »Faktor 5« high girder bridge from Goldhofer.”

With combination of detailed planning, close coordi-nation with all statutory and non-statutory authorities, the commitment with the “can-do” attitude of the Lee &  Muirhead team helped in achieving the milestone by delivering the generator stator safely to the project site on 20 June 2017, two days prior to the scheduled date as per engineering schedule and fi nal entry in the TG building on 29 June 2017.

An experienced and reliable partner for the transport of components for onshore and offshore wind pow-er plants, Goldhofer, while also adapting to current developments, is always offering the most economical vehicle confi guration. With our new FTV 500 blade transport device, we take the trend towards longer and wider rotor blades into account: The “big brother” of our successful FTV 300 covers all commercially avail-able blades up to the 70 m class. In order to do so, the load carrying capacity of the rotor blade adapter was signifi cantly increased. A raising angle of up to 60° and the infi nite pitch around the longitudinal axis of the blade provide optimal handling fl exibility and

make sure that, with the FTV 500, wind parks can even be built at locations that would usually require not only environmentally questionable tree uprooting, but also extensive and, in many cases, unacceptable road building measures (e.g. for bypasses).

Our customers know that, thanks to our tried and tested vehicle technology, perfect all-round services, extensive know-how and professional project engi-neering, we are a partner that they can rely on one hundred percent, in any given situation. THE WORLD’S STRONGEST ROPEFOR THE GERMAN ZUGSPITZBAHN

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK AT HUTCHINSONTHE STZ-VP 8 (285)Hutchinson Engineering Services Limited was founded in 1979 and is headquartered near Newark in the UK. The company’s portfolio, which is spread across two divisions, includes quality vehicle engineering, crane and plant hire, and above all heavy-haulage services. As a recent addition to its fl eet, Hutchinson also operates a new Goldhofer STZ-VP 8 (285), which has been in great demand from the start.

Hutchinson’s haulage specialist Harry Hughes has already handled numerous jobs with the Goldhofer lowloader and is “deeply impressed” by the robust engineering that has gone into the vehicle. “I work with the STZ-VP on a daily basis: a powerful workhorse that is ideally suited for all haulage operations, especially

There are two ways to ride up to the summit of the Zugspitze – Germany’s highest mountain – from the Tyrolean side in Austria or from Garmisch-Parten-kirchen on the cable car called the Bayerische Zug-spitzbahn, where four new track ropes were installed in May and June of this year. Each of these steel wire ropes is 4900 m in length, 72 mm in diameter, and has a specifi c weight of no less than 29.75 kg per meter for an impressive total weight of over 145 t.

The track ropes, which now hold the record as the world’s strongest cable car ropes, were manufactured by Fatzer AG Wire Ropes of Romanshorn in Switzer-land. That means they had to be transported to the customer over a distance of more than 200 km. Given the challenging size and weight of the cargo, the Swiss Feldmann Pneukran + Transport AG had no alternative but to develop a one-off solution for the vehicle confi gu-ration. “We started off by having special rope drums made so that the rig could travel along the autobahns,” says Marcel Guilbert, Manager of Transport Operations at Feldmann AG. “In view of the very considerable weight of the cargo, for all four trips each rope was divided up between two drums on two vehicles in a push-pull confi guration for the full distance of the journey. With an overall rig length of more than 54 m, this was a challenging mission on certain sections of the route.”

The front drum was designed for a maximum diameter of 4.5 m as the complete wire rope had to be wound onto it at the destination prior to installation. In order to transport the drum without exceeding the over-all legal height limit of 4.3 m, the transport experts designed a solution to “trim” the top segment of the drum. At the same time, the Feldmann team working in collaboration with Goldhofer’s design engineers performed real pioneering work with the development of the world’s fi rst dedicated wire rope drum bridge – with a payload capacity of 100 t.

Marcel Guilbert: “The bridge design was my idea and was perfectly implemented in cooperation with Goldhofer – a really unique solution, which has defi -nitely not been built in this form before.” For the con-fi guration of the front transporter with the rope drum bridge, the Feldmann team chose a Goldhofer THP/ET 4+7. Even in the heavy-duty module world, this vehicle is considered a real workhorse and is mainly used for long-distance operations. On this type of trailer, Goldhofer’s proven pendular axle technology contributes to a maximum axle load of 23 t. The rear vehicle for the smaller rope drum was provided by the Wipfl i Transporte company as subcontractors. Once the ropes had been apportioned and loaded on the two transporters, the fi rst journey could begin on a route from Switzerland to Germany via Liechtenstein and Austria.

“From start to fi nish, there were a number of round-abouts to be negotiated. With a total length of the rig of over 54 m, that was not always easy, but the hydraulic axle suspension system on the THP/ET did a great job. In Schaan (Liechtenstein) the route led through the center of the village, and a number of road signs had to be taken down,” says Marcel Guilbert. The last leg of the journey included a gradient of over 14 percent. In spite of the wet road, the 252 t rig took that in stride, and the fi rst rope arrived at its destina-tion without any incidents. The other three journeys also went off smoothly. Marcel Guilbert’s conclusion: “We are proud of the fact that we were able to de-velop a completely new solution in collaboration with Goldhofer for this operation. The industry insiders, and also the police offi cers involved, were pretty surprised to see the “little” Swiss turn up with such a great idea. Looking back, I can only say, ‘Excellent job, I would do it just the same way the next time.’”

involving heavy plant like the 90 t hydraulic drilling rig that had to be moved on rough construction site terrain!”

On longer journeys, too, the new lowloader has already proved its worth: A 90 t crane was recently transported over a distance of 110 km from Cambridge to Lincolnshire and an 85 t crusher from the Southwest of England to the West Midlands. For moving big and heavy machinery and plant, the STZ-VP with the drop deck is the ideal solution. Thanks to the highly robust design of the trailer frame, it has a high bending moment and, with an axle load of up to 16 t, it is currently the most powerful semi lowloader available from Goldhofer. The proven pendular axle system

ensures even load distribution on all the wheels, and the 65-degree steering angle gives the driver maximum maneuverability on diffi cult passages. The impressive suspension stroke of 600 mm qualifi es the vehicle for diffi cult terrain and rough construction site ground. Harry Hughes: “For us, the STZ-VP is an all-rounder that prepares us for the future with optimum fl exibility for our fl eet. The modular system means we can choose between a 5-axle and an 8-axle confi guration and thus react faster to growing demands in the heavy-haulage industry.”

FLEXIBLE CARGO DECK SYSTEMSTWO NEW STZ/L FOR FABER BAU

Two lowloader semitrailers with wheel recesses, namely a STZ-L 3 A RM and a STZ-L 4 A RM, have gone into service with Faber Bau of Alzey, Germany, for delivering machinery to the company’s construction sites. “The two vehicles, with three and four axles respectively, feature quick-change cargo deck systems for flexible operation and remotely controlled force-steered axles for optimum maneuverability,” says Markus Kasper, Head of Mechanical Engineering at Faber Bau.

In the case of the 4-axle semitrailer with a payload of 42 t, Faber Bau presented Goldhofer’s engineers with a number of challenges. The main requirement was to have a lowloader with an extension capability to achieve a loading length of up to 12.8 m. “The extendable deck is a big advantage for us because we can use it to move big asphalt pavers,” says Kasper, “and not just the usual excavators, wheel loaders, finishers and rollers.”

At the same time, the overall length was not to exceed 16.5 m so as to avoid the need for transport permits. Markus Kasper explains: “Meeting both of these requirements in one and the same vehicle was a real challenge, but in close consultation with our people, Goldhofer’s engineers mastered it brilliantly.”

For Markus Kasper, who is responsible for the complete fleet at Faber Bau, the STZ project was not the first occasion for collaboration with Goldhofer. “We know that Goldhofer always does

an excellent job in terms of quality and service,” he explains, “the combination of the two is a huge advantage.” That is a reference to the versatility of the vehicles and the system advantages of the wheel recesses with drive-on covers for carrying wheeled and tracked vehicles.

The 90 t crane was transported over a distance of 110 km without a hitch.

BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL FUTURE TOGETHERWITH GLOBALLY PROVEN PRODUCTS AND WELL-THOUGHT-OUT INNOVATIONS

With our newly acquired US subsidiary, Goldhofer has established a foundation for international growth, and demonstrated its dedication to supporting its markets. We are always at your service – in Memmingen, Ostfi ldern, the US and all over the world. Our mission is to create maximum customer benefi t for you. Market requirements are always the main focus of our innovations.

With the THP/DC, we have developed a dual-lane vehi-cle for the US market that can be widened even under load. The STZ-P9 is also tailored to the framework of US regulations and makes it possible to retract the rear bogie under load, improving maneuverability when negotiating tight bends or roundabouts.

The STZ-VP (285) is at home wherever and whenever it gets rough and dirty. Thanks to bigger tires, the opti-mized excavator recess and the lowest drop deck in the market, it its perfectly suited for transporting construc-tion vehicles effi ciently from site to site.

With the development of the FTV 500, we take into account the ever-increasing dimensions of wind turbine rotor blades. We have advanced the proven technology of the FTV 300 in combination with heavy-duty modules in order to allow you to bring even the biggest blades safely to their destination.

With their revised bogie design, the new STZ-VL and STZ-VH semi lowloaders are even more robust and eas-ier to handle than before. We have paid special attention to intelligent details, like a wider excavator recess, light-est design at high frame stability, various combination options and a choice of different bridges.

In addition to our products, our service portfolio also offers you maximum benefi t and highest safety, help-ing you fi nd the right solution for any project. From the economic wear parts package to individual training to an all-inclusive package tailored to your personal needs, we make almost anything possible so that you can focus on your main business.

Unique software solutions for transport planning com-plete our offering. With easyLOAD, easyVERSION and easyTRACK, you can plan the correct load distribution as well as vehicle confi guration and test critical narrow points on the transport route in simulation. In the future, additional useful software modules will continue to be available to further simplify the planning, coordination, approval and execution of your transports.

The slogan “Sales sells the fi rst vehicle, service sells the second” is still valid today. However, modern service is more than just that. For us, it means that the relationship between customer and provider is shaped into a true partnership. It is our challenge to strike a balance between interests that seem to be different at fi rst glance – your interests as a customer and our interests as a vehicle manufacturer.

The high availability of our vehicles, low operating costs and the optimization of the total cost of own-ership are essential for you as our customer. On the other hand, the successful sale of our products is the main concern for us, the manufacturer. In order to meet these challenges, we have developed a service strategy that offers an optimum solution for both sides. To this end, we have dealt with the question of what makes the Goldhofer Service special. We believe it is important to identify our potentials and clarify how we can offer you unique and benefi cial services tailored to your individual needs within an overall concept.

The Goldhofer Service is known for its extensive ex-pertise in technical consultation and solutions as well as its high quality. We will continue to live up to this promise. At the same time, we want to be recognized as a proactive, modern service provider. In order to achieve this goal, we have taken a variety of mea-sures.

GOLDHOFER SERVICE STRATEGY CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS

If you are interested in becoming a part of our success, we look forward to your application. Further information on current job openings can be found on our website.
