UPCOMING EVENTS & COMPETITIONS

1. How and why did you choose architecture?

My father was an architect. The only thing I knew was how to draw lines. My

father exposed me to architecture at a very young age. I did my schooling at

JJ school of Architecture in Bombay.

By 20, I was an architect.

2. What is ‘design’ in Architecture – your perception

Nowadays there is a tendency to go against nature. We have to live with

nature work with nature. Air conditioned houses to air conditioned cars to AC

and money at the gym. Silly way of doing things. We should feel comfortable

in a space. Design is world apart. Look at buildings by Eero Saarinen, Richard

Neutra, Mies, Frank Lloyd Right – how beautiful they are, the Whitney Museum

done by German Architect Marcel Breuer. They all believed house must be

comfortable for a wife who spends most of her time there - so provide a nice

landscape than plain walls. Today its become glass age. Everybody keeps curs-

also hazardous. Would you rather look at these glass buildings or enjoy looking

at our museum building. People prefer these type of structures so architects are

forced to give it. It’s a very tough competition.

All old age architects always blended with nature. A lot of thought was given

to designing external spaces landscaping while looking at it internally too thus

creating spaces that are soothing to our eyes and mind. Major challenge is to

convince clients.

In olden days money was an issue. We had to struggle, money was not available

easily. But nowadays times have changed. So thought process has changed.

Architecture makes a world of difference with time. In olden days people paid

more attention and had mutual respect. Nowadays clients have money, so more

its more of spending and showing off. We have to live sensibly. For example I

don’t turn on lights in the morning times because the room gets enough natural

light.

Look at these new age concrete shell structures, we did this 40 years ago with-

out the use of computer technology – (Auditorium building by Chitale Architects

in Tirupathi).

Nowadays clients are more about imitating what they’ve seen elsewhere with-

out thinking of context. That is why we end up with so many glass façade build-

ings which generate lot of heat. Take the example of old Chettinad Houses

how much of natural light and ventilation – designed to suit their lifestyle. Now

there is still ignorance about what architecture means, even people of eminence

equate architecture to making good elevations!

Renowned Architect S.L.Chitale is one of our most senior and well respected ar-

chitects in the industry. His father, Late Architect S.M. Chitale gave an identity to

architects in Tamilnadu, and as a second generation Architect, Ar. S. L. Chitale took

over his father’s practice currently running CHITALE & Sons with his son Ar. Kapil

Chitale. They have several notable institutional, industrial, commercial & residen-

tial projects to their credit. Not only students but also practising architects look up

to him for inspiration.

So it has become a matter of survival for archi-

tects.

5. Apart from schooling what makes an

architect?

More to do with common sense which works for

us and our client. If you design for a farmer then

safety of his cows and goats should be thought

about.

Practice what comes to mind. Be ethically and

morally correct. Don’t abuse anything.
